    Help in moving in

I am in the U.S. packing for my move to Jomptien Beach. I will be only taking some of my clothes and computer as everything either uses the wrong voltage, or is too heavy.

In the U.S. they have what they call “Thrift Stores” where you can buy second hand items like coffee makers, dishes, etc.

Our new condo is basically empty, so we will need all of the usual stuff immediately. Does anybody know if this sort of place exists in Pattaya?

New stuff is pretty cheap here.

My 3 piece sofa cost 13k (you can get a shitty vinyl one for half that) and my table & chairs were around 17k (prolly start at around 5k). The double bed in my spare room was around 5k (my bed was around 40k).

There was a picture of it in the Toaster thread, but Admin has been buggering around in the old gallery and deleted it by the looks of things.

I usually get all that stuff off of other teacher when they leave the LOS. JUst throw a mattress in a corner of your room and the other furniture seems to find its way to you.

Seeing as some of you lot seem interested in my bed. Here it is.

I figured that seeing as one spends around a third of one's life in one, I'd get a good one.

    Another 'expert'.

I'm 6'2" and I don't want to suffer from uneccessary back pain if I can help it. My mattress is an average imported one that cost 15k.

If you prefer a shitty 5k bed from Lotus, go for it.

My mattress was about 10k, it is now about 12 years old so is covered in semen and period stains, but alas I worry about buying a new one as it may not be as comfortable, the 2k ones I could never sleep on, I value my sleep so would buy the best I could.

    Hey Marmite,

I fully sympathise as I too am over 6ft & know full well what can happen if you get a cheap bed.

I splashed on what was,for me, an expensive bed 5yrs ago & haven't regretted it one bit.

But I assumed a good bed in Thailand would cost less than 40k?

There are some OK locally made mattresses for 10 - 15k but the imported ones are big ticket items. When I moved up here I sold all my stuff to this guy that ran the loacal mini-mart. He didn't even want the nice pillow-top mattress for damn-near free. The cheap ones are hard as a rock, same as sleepin' on the floor.

There was a big fair in Pratchuap Khiri Khan last year in August. A lot of stalls were set up in the street selling furniture.

This bed was 16k Baht; I didn't buy it but it is a lot better than the crappy chip board thing I have at the moment.

I did have to get a new mattress though, the old one had about as much give as a sandbag. We paid 7k Baht from a local furniture store, not top quality but I slept like log after that.
    Lord, deliver us from e-mail.

Hey, why does that make me an idiot? I'm rather attached to my concrete rats, better than boring old gnomes anyday!

Macha - any idiot who says you have to pay shitloads for anything in Thailand is a HiSo wannabe and they complain, complain, complain and evevtually end up back in England bitching about Asia.
I could generalise further but I've got to water the concrete lawn today!
