I find that western foods such as cooked ham, cheese etc are now twice the price of the UK.

Thai grown/produced products are also much more expensive in BKK supermarkets like Foodland. In Khlong Toei market though they are still reasonably cheap, even though the price has definitely risen.

Fast food shite like KFC or McD's is now only marginaly cheaper than in the UK.

Also, the 35/40bt something on rice places and the noodle places (full of sugar, salt and MSG) are still relatively cheap.
Step by step, inch by inch, piece by piece.

Same in CA. Actually a lot cheaper, better quality and selection. Like most of us some western foods are needed to quench a yeaning so we pay. Conversly Thai food and ingredients in CA are 10 times the price than in Thailand.

The price of eggs is regularly mentioned as an economic indicator, isn't it.

I don't think the average Thai is quite so free 'n easy about inflation as you, jeff.

    Off-topic, but...

Know what I had a hard time finding in the US/Florida?

Thai Basil. The krappow basil. The horapha one.

Ho-lee fuck I couldn't find it anywhere and ended up buying actual plants that a Thai woman was selling at a temple.

Was expensive too. $60 bucks each for a large, 5ft tall one that looked like a male pot plant.

Anyway was a pain in the ass. Apparently Thai food is completely non authentic without it and basically a crisis.

Good to see you supplementing your low income with some work that gives your diet protein
Pretty soon you'll have enough baht for a new kitchen oven and you'll be able to cook some proper food.

Yet, many [more than you might consider] secure their own rice and eggs for personal/familial consumption - so any economic comparison and analysis might be moot.

Yeah its annoying but this is kind of true. There are a few places that sell it around me, but it expires and molds within 48 hours max. Not sure if its coming from Thailand or what. Its expensive enough where it should be. But I doubt it

Yeah but I wonder if what they are selling is the actual horapha one. Plenty of Asian markets around were selling Asian basil but it wasn't the Thai one. Holy basil, lemon basil, but not the horapha one.

Also jeff must be drunk because he sent me a red to inform me that it doesn't grow in the US. Derp. No shit. There isn't really a market for an herb with a shelf life of hours that's indigenous to SEA. It grows just fine in Florida, just like marijuana.

No it doesn't - not even in your beloved Florida.
Real true Thai basil.....which should be noted, that base varieties of basil[s] are native to Siam.

    Thick cunts.

Weird. I bought a few plants of Thai basil and they, you know, grew in florida.

    Even in the sandy soil.

    They are literal weeds, jeff.

Well did the rounds today of BigC Tesco and Lotus, and found lots of things have gone up in price.

My ring donuts I used to buy for 5 baht each are now 10 baht. so have to go without.

We mostly go to the Markets for fruit and veg when they have them, which are relatively cheaper.

Anyone know if the supermarkets have ever had Prices wars over here.?

I've got lovely Thai Basil plants in the UK.

Perhaps someone told Dimwit Jeff you can only get them in Thailand.

After reading that we'll just have to make sure that the only Basil we use is grown in Thailand, for it to be authentic Basil, all the other Basil's are no good imitations.
Of course I'll have to double check this new information with the very knowledgeable Thai wives that are Mary's friends, why they haven't mentioned this before is unusual. I'm sure it would be on a Thai priority list of food topics.
