    Any joggers/runners on TD?

I started jogging a month ago. I moved my speed walking up to a light jog. It is getting easier everday. I have many friends that tell me that jogging or running is not good for the joints. It makes sense that it is hard on the body and joints, but just how bad is it for you? I suppose if you run to fast or too far that it can be dangerous.

What are the pros and cons to jogging or running for you?

Just in a month, I have dropped ten pounds (also training Muay thai). My legs are quite sore and stretching is always good. Any other tips? Thanks!

Just spent 3 days dry stone walling so mmy legs a re fooked. One of the great pleasures for me is a gentle morning jog along the beach followed by a swim before the place gets crowded. GF thinks i'm nuts.
The key PB, is to jog on soft ground, grass or sand is ideal. No track work or roads. I used to run marathons and that's what buggered me knee and hip joints. Take it easy, but make sure you get breathless at least twice in a 30 minute sesion. Sex is also good for burning calories but not whilst jogging

My advise is forget jogging. Its good but if you need to loose a few then the impact on you legs wont do you any good. Swimming is your friend, you'll loose more and save your knees.

^^Common sense my friend. If you can have sex while jogging, then you have created a new style.. lol.

Yeah, I agree with the swimming. There are many people that say that you don't lose as much weight swimming. I think you would burn more calories running. Although, swimming is sooo much better for the joints. I do both, but prefer swimming.

Exercise, cut back on the carbs a bit and you'll loose a lot more quickly.

Jogging is hard on the joints and it's high impact.

It depends on whether it's hard on your joints:

Age, weight, strentgh of leg muscles (runner's knee, quads to strong), etc.

You can alwasy switch to something just as health and low impact.

Make sure to get good quality footwear as you cannot skimp of good footwear.

    Do not run down hill.

I think jogging on treadmills is hard on the joints and it's not a natural running motion.

Have got into jogging too lately; in the sticks I run through the back of my garden into the woods, copse really, half a kilo, stop, 20 press ups on a non-ant infested tree stump, jog a bit more to another antless tree stump, back to the previous stump as I've only found 2, and so on til I've done 5 sets, turn tound and jog back, takes half an hour. Most people can walk faster than I jog but enough at my age to get the ticker pumping. Feel great after a month of it!

Swimming is better for the joints as is cycling but the privacy angle is missing. Swimming peace can be blown away by brats jumping in your space, and cycling can cause death by wank drivers and/or pot-holes. Jogging slowly out the back of my place does it for me

Swimming a lot better for the body, IMO.

And yes, people swimming/jumping/goofing off/being d*cks in the pool can be an issue.

This and decent shoes are the key.

Running and the "runners high" can be quite addictive. My cousin runs all the bloody time, he by the time he was in his forties he had already had work done on both knees and both hips. Doc keeps telling him he needs to stop with the running completely. He is nearing the 50 year mark and still runs nearly everyday. Who knows how long he'll be able to keep it up - or if he will be able to walk on his own in another decade or so.

I used to run when I was younger and my knees can not really stand-up to the impact now days. I use an elliptical machine now days to get the cardio, but I still walk about 5k every morning and evening. It's good to get out into the sun for Vitamin D production.

I would agree that swimming is probably the very best all around type of excersise (and low impact), but I am a crap swimmer.

Swimmings best for joints, I was ( and still am at heart) a skater which fucks your joints up after a while. I did the jogging thing and it just made things worse the next day so I go swimming and do jump rope, sometimes.

I always thought you would have neck muscles like Stevie Wonder and after all of you heavy metal head banging?

To Pucketbound..................... I am sure we can arrange the Phuket Thai ladies jogging society to trample you into any available sidewalk and after your less than savoury comments about Thai females. Sad Fvcker!

Get over it.. it wasn't aimed at you either.

Melv, what type of skating do you do? I like inline skating too, but I got a little crazy and went down a hill with no helmet one time. I took three layers of skin off my leg, and don't go down hills anymore.. strictly flat surfaces from now one.

Hey Bugs, I think runner's high is quite addictive too. I find the more I run, the faster and longer I can go. I try not to run more than forty five mins, because I don't want to kill my joints. I don't run overly fast either.

Swimming is good, but I'm starting Muay Thai classes again this week. An Australian girl fighter is starting classes, and can't wait to start up again after nearly a year of being away. KIck ASS!

Cash spent on good running shoes is money well spent, New Balance are my personal favorite.

Beware of aches and pains, get good physio advice to treat them before they become problematic and harder to deal with.

Stretch before and after for 5 to 10 minutes.

    Cheers

I run and love it. I do not run outside though - the heat would kill me in this country. I run on treadmills at the gym, which I know is probably bad for the joints but I've been okay so far. If I start to feel an ache or a pain then I stop. I do intervals - 3 minutes walking and 7 minutes running. 30-40 minutes of that and I've got a great runner's high.

The right shoes are very important. For me, I've got a pair of Nike Pegasus running shoes - they work great. Just depends on what type of runner you are and where your foot lands.
