    Getting fit in Thailand

I am returning to Thailand this week and have made a resolution to get my body into shape after a long period of laziness.

I am just on the verge of entering my late 20s and after a long illness I have woken up to my own mortality and the potential benefits that being physically fit would bring me. I was very active as a child and have a naturally athletic body but when I turned 12 my interests turned to pot and girls and I haven't actively exercised in years and while I can tackle a brisk up hill walk for a couple of miles I could barely run 50ms before spluttering with exaustion. I haven't drunk heavliy for a few years now and gave up light smoking a few months ago so my body should respond to exercise well but I will be starting from cratch as I am so unfit.

I hope the exercise will improve sleep, counter my slight "beer belly" (my BMI is good but by Thai standards I have a little paunch), lessen the amount of neuropathic pain I suffer and generally promote a feeling of well being. I don't have a clue where to start so if you can answer any of the below questions or have done this kind of thing yourself please add any thoughts you have.

    * I plan to start off jogging given my conditon what kind distances should I run and how should I monitor my progress?

    * Where can I get some decent multi-purpose trainers?

    * I've never been to a gym before. Which offer the best per session rates. Is it easy to join university gyms?

    * How can I keep myself motivated and check progress made.

    * Should I try and draw up somekind of plan ?

    * What websites should I be reading?

    * Are there any safe non-steriod medication I could use to quicken any improvements

    * Has anyone else started from sctach like me?

    * How many months would it be before I began to notice some benefits?

    * Any tips on keeping motivated?

Go for time not distance. You need to get 45 minutes to an hour of aerobics. Jog until you can't jog anymore and then walk fast and then when your rested go back to jogging and so on.

    * Where can I get some decent multi-purpose trainers?

    Robinson or Central.

    * I've never been to a gym before. Which offer the best per session rates. Is it easy to join university gyms?

I like Fitness First as they have everything you need from free weights to machines to RPM classes. They also have a sauna and a steam room. You mentioned sleep problems - sitting in a sauna or steam room for 15 to 30 minutes helps with sleep problems.

    * How can I keep myself motivated and check progress made.

With time, if you don't work out you will notice it and be down. So motivation comes with time.

    * Should I try and draw up somekind of plan ?

    Set some goals.

    * What websites should I be reading?

    Any you can!

    * Are there any safe non-steriod medication I could use to quicken any improvements.

Creatine and protein powders work wonders along with 8 hours of good sleep.

    * Has anyone else started from sctach like me?

I did after nearly 8 years of inactivity.

    * How many months would it be before I began to notice some benefits?

    3 to 6 months.

    * Any tips on keeping motivated?

Keep your eye on the prize.

Least 20min of aerobic exercise is the norm. I normally run 3mi - which is about 30min.

-interval training is the best for increasing speed/lowering time - ie run/sprint/run ect

Distance and time doesn't matter, the most important thing is that you progress over time. Start off with walking and ramp up speeds/times as you go.

    * Where can I get some decent multi-purpose trainers?
There are Sports World branches in Bangers that sell quality shoes.

    * I've never been to a gym before. Which offer the best per session rates. Is it easy to join university gyms?
The gym that's closest to you is best, that rate may vary.

    * How can I keep myself motivated and check progress made?
Small notebook, keep track of times/distances/reps/weights

    * Should I try and draw up somekind of plan ?
Probably, but what plan you use depends on what results you want.

    * What websites should I be reading?
    Pass.

    * Are there any safe non-steriod medication I could use to quicken any improvements?
I would say eat healthy non-processed food, a multivitamin for insurance.

    * Has anyone else started from sctach like me?
    Erm.... Several times.

    * How many months would it be before I began to notice some benefits?
Depends on what you define as benefits?

    * Any tips on keeping motivated?
Make exercise a habit just like brushing your teeth, and you'll be right.

If you get that "cant be bothered to run" feeling one day substitute it with jump rope. 10 or 15 mins gets your heart pumping.

    * Should I try and draw up somekind of plan ?
World domination is always a good one

    * Has anyone else started from sctach like me?
Yes and Im starting from scratch again, I think pretty much everyone starts from scratch anyway.

    * How many months would it be before I began to notice some benefits?
Disagree with Chi on this one. If youre talking about bodybuilding then maybe but you'll notice your stamina build for running/aerobics etc more at the start. Even just doing press ups each day you'll notice a change after 2 weeks of it from scratch.

    * Any tips on keeping motivated?
Make the end of a run finish as close as possible to the nearest blowjob/shortime gaff, you'll make the distance every time!

I agree and will go as far to say that your muscles will feel tighter and firmer after just one workout.

What I mean is that it takes about 3 to 6 months to look in the mirror and really be shocked at what you see. 3 to 6 months until you wake up feeling younger, stronger and better about yourself in an unbelievable way.

Feeling like new man is the phrase that best describes it.

I wouldn't recommend Creatine. It does allow you to train harder but it tastes like crap and plays havok with your stomach. Made me shit like a trooper, but I did become physically very strong. I wouldn't take it again though.

I would recommend Protein shakes though. Drink one within the first 5 to 10 min when you wake up in the morning to get your metabolism started and you've got some energy to burn off during your exercise.

    My thoughts:

    * I plan to start off jogging given my conditon what kind distances should I run and how should I monitor my progress?

Try swimming,..less trauma on the body and its good exercising. You will not want to run in April/May/June/July/August here in Thailand,…..too f’in hot!

    * Where can I get some decent multi-purpose trainers?

Don’t waste your money. Find a daily routine and stick to it.

    * How can I keep myself motivated and check progress made.

You will feel better over time,.should be motivation enough.

    * Should I try and draw up somekind of plan ?

Get a plan and stick to it.

    * How many months would it be before I began to notice some benefits?

Six months to see your tummy flatten up (if you eat properly and stay away from drinking) doing 75 sit-ups per day.

    * Any tips on keeping motivated?

End results, should keep you motivated.

    Good luck!

Important part - switchup what you are doing every few months - body adjusts to a routine, so need to keep it of balance for optimal workout.

LOL. I think you have the wrong end of the stick. In England "trainers" also means "sneakers" or "running shoes". Thanks for your answers dude.

** Does anyone know of any keep fit forums where I could get someone to give me a basic routine to get me started. ( I feel if i have a set regimen I am more likely to stick to it than a vague "I'm going to go jogging every morning" mad_dog plan.... )

*** Has anyone used exercise to combat pain conditions? I beleive that once your body begins to get fit your body will produce pain killing endorphines more easily. (At the moment a 500 yard dash would have me heaving and nauseous.

I'll weigh in here even though I have you on ignore. I used to think it was impossible to get fit in Thailand, but I started doing it about 3 months ago and the results have been great.

I set myself goals and routines and (for the most part) I've kept to them. I stopped drinking beer and stopped eating unhealthy Thai food. Anything fried or cooked in oil is a big no-no, especially the shit they sell on the street. I make lots of sandwiches, drink water (sometimes with diluted squash), and only eat white meat. I don't have anything unhealthy in my fridge. Soda is gone. All those sweets are gone. So far I have lost 19 pounds, gained a lot of upper body strength, and I feel a hell of a lot better.

    * I plan to start off jogging given my conditon what kind distances should I run and how should I monitor my progress?

I do intervals on the treadmill. I started with Walk 5 minutes, run 2 minutes, walk 3 minutes, run 2 minutes. I gradually increased the run time. I'm now up to where I can do 3 intervals of running 6 minutes, walk 3 minutes. Intervals are better than just running continuously - I find that you build more endurance that way and you burn more calories.

    * Where can I get some decent multi-purpose trainers?

Got mine in the US, but I've seen shops that sell them in Emporium and Central. I've got running shoes - Nike Pegasus. They were about $80 in the states.

    * I've never been to a gym before. Which offer the best per session rates. Is it easy to join university gyms?

Don't know about university gyms. I joined California WoW over in Esplanade. I paid 8,000 baht for 6 months. It has everything I need, although I could do without the gay Thai dudes touching their muscles and chatting away on their cell phones all the time. I go 4 times a week. I do 20 minutes on the bike, then 30 minutes on weights, and I finish with 30 minutes on the treadmill.

Do not bother with the personal trainers in Thailand. They are shit - I've seen them trying to "help" the people at my gym and they don't have a fucking clue.

    * How can I keep myself motivated and check progress made.

Buy a scale and weigh yourself every week (or every couple of days like me). As for being motivated, the hot tottie at the gym is enough to keep me on the treadmill for a few more minutes. Set goals and try and meet them; reward yourself occasionally.

    * Should I try and draw up somekind of plan ?

I didn't. I have a set goal in mind and I have a workout plan and a routine that I stick to.

    * What websites should I be reading?

I don't. Many will have conflicting reports. But anything on nutrition is probably good to read up on.

    * Are there any safe non-steriod medication I could use to quicken any improvements

The only supplement I use is Ripped Fuel, a metabolic enhancer. I take 2 before my workout.

    * How many months would it be before I began to notice some benefits?

Depends on how dedicated you are. I started noticing a difference in a month. In 3 months you'll notice a huge difference.

Considering you have let your fitness go completely you need to ease yourself back into it slowly and not go hard or you will probably give it a miss altogether if you lack motivation.

1 : Fuck running in the early stages as its too hard. you'll do yourself muscle and tendon damage as your body ain't up to it, your then fuked anyway so forget it.

Every day walk for an hour until you feel better about the exercise gig and increase it from there, build your fitness slowly and walk in an interesting area listening to mp3 player.

2 : Spend 3000 baht and buy top quality sport shoes, very important point.

3 : Join a gym that has good equipment and lovely women to look at as this will motivate you, its a social scene as well, could possibly pull a shag or two.

4 : Don't try and be a hero, go for light weights and more reps until your body starts to respond.

The most important thing to being fit and healthy is to maintain exercise over a prolonged period and not expect quick results.

Quick results through going hard means that when you stop you go back to where you were just as quick.

Go slow and make things enjoyable, gain your fitness and body shape slowly, be consistent and turn it into a life style.

Reward yourself with a few beers every now and then, mans not a camel.

    Good luck.

And one more thing : get rid of that fucking pearl necklace, your hair does look lovely though.

slowwly slowly catch the monkey here, build it up gradually. as terry said its hard on the body. 10 mins first, 11 the next etc. interval with walking and remember its not about ego

    * Where can I get some decent multi-purpose trainers?
    already been answered

    * I've never been to a gym before. Which offer the best per session rates. Is it easy to join university gyms?
agree with fitness first, but really depends on your location. getting to the gym has to be as easy as possible, otherwise you wont go, travel to suffer, nahh
    * How can I keep myself motivated and check progress made.
rewards, reward yourself, when i fit in those old jeans, when i lose x kilos

    * Should I try and draw up somekind of plan ?
yep, should be progress in some form every week otherwise you are not really doing enough. to be honest though going from doing nothing to something is good enough at first. think what you want to achieve later and build a plan to meet it

    * What websites should I be reading?
    i like
John Stone Fitness - Welcome! informative and welcoming
Bodybuilding.com - The Future Of Bodybuilding! Huge Bodybuilding Site. bit focused on selkling stuff though
RossTraining - Bridging The Gap Between Ordinary and Extraordinary alternative and stuff you can do at home
Welcome to CrossFit: Forging Elite Fitness is a bit nazi but some good resources etc.

    * Are there any safe non-steriod medication I could use to quicken any improvements
    dont bother mate

    * Has anyone else started from sctach like me?
yes a number of times and im doing it again

    * How many months would it be before I began to notice some benefits?
depends what you measure but give it a month

    * Any tips on keeping motivated?
progress helps, but if you fall off get back on
    good luck

Another thing to consider, especially as going to the gym is probably the most boring thing in the world, is to join a local footy or rugby team; even if it's just for the training, as it's fun and there's a few good blokes there too (well, at the rugby there are).

The downside is the 6 hours of drinking afterwards, but you can always skip that.

Why, you're just a young buck MD. Good that you see the benefits of keeping fit and in shape without sacrificing an enjoyable existence. Personally, I couldn't attempt to pass on any tips and whatnot - everyone needs to find their own way. Every situation is different....just use your good senses. For someone just living into their half century {51}, I've kept in amazing shape without giving it an overwhelming consideration. I'm not the gym type....certainly the last dozen + years, I involve myself with physical activity daily with our business {farming, agri, stock farming} and kills to birds. Diet is essential without being paranoid about what's this, what's not. I smoke {a packet every 4 days} not much - but will probably out live everyone I know. I imbibe on a semi-regular basis, like everyone, without showing outward signs of a drunkard The only advice I can extend would be to find your own way - you'll get there! Every situation, like every person, is different. Cheers.

Live in an apartment with one of these and use it for 30 minutes, 5 times per week

And one of these for 30 minutes (straight afterwards), 5 times per week

If you want some muscle as well as stamina, use some of these for 40 minutes twice per week

Don't eat carbs in the evening, and nothing after 6pm.

^^It depends on what time you sleep, but it helps to avoid getting fat because you digest food whilst you sleep but use very few calories, so most of the calories you digest turns straight into fat (unlike during the day where you use the calories as you digest them).

Eating late at night and consuming alcohol is even more fattening as alcohol is pure calories.
