    Diabetes

I have just been diagnosed with diabetes. It's not surprising really, I'm a big-fat f?cker, who hasn't exercised in years. We don't know what type it is yet, I need more tests.

Is there any one else on the board who suffers with it and if so, how easily controlled is it, here in LoS?

One final thing. The time has come for exercise.

Any recommendations on where I can get a half-decent mountain bike from that will hold my frame or do you know of a good, second-hand one for sale?

    Cheers, DsD.

Can't answer any of your questions but have one for you if that's OK - what were your symptoms?

When you say "big-fat fucker" just how big do you mean? Similar to alwarner, but figures into what advice would be appropriate.

Extreme tiredness. Constantly using the toilet, especially at night. Aches, pains in my legs. Feeling light-headed.

These are what I suffered with but there are a lot more.

    Sounds grim

Was it something you noticed straight away or did it get worse over time?

    You weren't kidding were you!

Probably best to take advice from your doctor on appropriate exercise then, all things considered.

It's important to remember that it will all be for nothing unless you sort your diet out as well. I don't really know too much about diabetes but from what I do understand it's probably doubly important in that case.

Things gradually got worse and then I realised there must be something really wrong.

As far as I can tell already, diabetes means a whole life change. Especially diet. I'm finding out already there's so much stuff you really can not eat any more or very infrequently.

It's my own fault, I'm not gonna cry about it. Just have to man-up and turn my life around.

I suppose beer's not the be all and end all of life....8-(

If you have type 2 then it can be controlled by diet and exercise . I read a report where they treated 100 people with Diabetes type 2 to strict diets and an exercise program. After trial had finished all 100 had been taken off their medication. The only problem was after a few month 95% where back on the medication because the strict lifestyle couldn't be adhered too.I don't have Diabetes but my friends that do take medication to suite their lifestyle, not because they have too !!!
I started an exercise plan about 6/7 months ago and have gone from 99.5k to 87.5k.
20k bike rides everyday( or other types of exercise) and a healthy diet is all it takes.

Sorry one more thing I should point out is your are a prime candidate to try and control your Diabetes ( that is if it is type 2 ) with diet and exercise.

When someone is first diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, the cornerstones of management are often, initially, what many health-care professionals term “diet and exercise,” or, more appropriately, “lifestyle changes.” In other words, a person in the early stages of Type 2 diabetes may be able to control his blood glucose levels nicely by following a carbohydrate- and calorie-controlled meal plan, losing some weight (if necessary), and fitting regular physical activity into his or her schedule. At this stage of the game, the body is still making enough insulin, and healthy eating and activity help the body use its own insulin quite efficiently.
Over time, however, diabetes progresses, and lifestyle changes simply aren’t enough anymore to control blood glucose levels. At this point, a person with Type 2 diabetes will likely need to start taking medicine in addition to continuing with those healthy lifestyle changes. Medicine is usually in the form of one or more diabetes pills. Many people with Type 2 eventually go on to require insulin.

The above is from Treating Diabetes with Diet and Exercise :: Diabetes Self-Management

    Good luck deathstardan

If you don't lose a lot of weight your gonna be fucked.

You know this anyway mate. That's a lot of excess to tackle - why don't you get your stomach stapled?

Exercise is boring for me but I force myself to do it.

Spoke a big spliff spliff at 6am as the sunrises and then go for a jog in the park. Less boring that way and you get into it easier.

    Good luck.

My family has quite a few diabetics.

It seems the secret to controlling it is diet.

My Dad (85 years old) is insulin dependant, but has the best body guard money can buy (my mum). She controls his diet with an iron fist. He still has a couple of scotch whiskeys every night, but understands that it was worth giving up beer and wine due to the sugar content.

My Uncle, a few years younger than my Dad, was diagnosed around the same time, but he basically just wanted to continue doing what he did before. He eventually developed gangrene and had both legs amputated, then 6 months later died about 10 years ago.

His daughter, my cousin (48), has already had 2 toes amputated. She also continues to eat and drink what ever the hell she wants.

Darn bad news, and tizme, that's nasty. A damn good incentive to get moving.

DSD, bike shop near lumpini and there's also one near Bumrungrad hospital. Get a good one to start with, makes if much more enjoyable to ride in the first place.

I had a bike accent in Krabi and had two operations. Just before the first one they said my blood sugar was too high and that it would complicate the procedure. I had no idea I had high blood sugar till then. I'm slim and get good exercise. But I was hooked on sweets, especially those brownies they sell at the 7. Never was much of a drinker.

I came home for more treatment for the foot and leg. At that time I was 200, that's about 2X the normal BS plus a tad more. They gave me pills to take with meals. In case someone needs to know, they are Glopizide and Metformin. I went back to the Vets Hospital a month later and I was under a hundred. The fookin nurses were parading me round the place and bragging on my behalf.

It's the amputations I'm concerned about. It's my life's resolve .. no amputations, no long jail time.

I read a lot about diet on the Internet even though I was a minor case. The phrase I remember most was: The diabetic diet isn't complicated, it's the same diet everyone should have.

I have lived with type 2 for years, I am off the medication now, it's not so bad. Build up your exercise slowly, swimming is great,so is power walking. I suggest no jogging at your weight.
Best thing I found on my dieting is raw porridge oats with lots of fruit and natural low fat yoghurt, lasts me all day with the odd Apple or banana through the day. Main meals, cut out the fat and use a smaller plate.
I wish you luck and promise you that stick with it and soon you feel so much better, you will find it gets easier.

    Cheers guys.

I have a friend here from Aus who is type 1 diabetes. He seems to think I'm not type 2 because of my age, 36. He seems to think type 2 is for older fellers.

The hospital has put me on loads of drugs for two weeks and then I have to go back for more tests.

That's a myth that has been rcently debunked. Keep going for your tests, improve your diet and increase your exercise levels gradually, as others have mentioned on here. Nigel's last post was great advice.

Once you find out which type you are, then you can make better choices, and hopefully get off drugs and just on a good healthy regimen.

    Cheers, Nat.

I'm praying like mad that it's type 2. That gives me a better chance I feel, if what I have read is true.

Once again, I have no one to blame but myself. I can't really start moaning now.

Thanks everyone for the words of encouragement...
