    Hearing loss

I think I probably already know the answer to this query, but thought I'd ask to see if there were any experts who can tell me -

Can hearing loss due to ageing be reversed in any way?

I have a terrific collection of vinyl records and unfortunately they don't sound the same as they used to when I was a young man. It's not a change of taste, it's just that I can't hear the high frequencies anymore. Makes me sad.

Not unusual mate, for some reason I cant hear my turning car indicator. Got my hearing checked and all ok for general sound it seems just some tones are the problem.
Must admit though I do have great difficulty in hearing the mumbling of our youth today or understanding what they are saying. Sometimes it seems like a foreign language to me and they get annoyed when you ask them to translate.

I know, the bastards, they do it on purpose. My ex and my son used to do it all the time, couldn't hear a thing with the tv in the background.

    Hearing Devices

There are many natural remedies for hearing loss that can be employed by an individual. These natural remedies for hearing loss include the use of warm oil as an ear drop.

My gramps used to not hear the phone ringing full blast in the next room, but could hear the low rumble of a car approaching on the main road before anyone else (we were on a farm with bugger all traffic).

How about new CDs, how do you hear them? Maybe the old records are just not as good and have never been as good as you remember them. Besides they don't get better with time and they lose the high frequencies first, too.

Actually even if a hearing test shows loss of ability to hear high frequencies, people still recognize when those high frequencies are missing from music. That has been tested using low pass filters.

I had an over 80 years old neighbour. She could barely hear me when I shouted at her. But she complained about the noise from children she could see in the distance through her closed windows.

    Disgusting old nut.

Warm olive oil dropped into the ears every few days might help, if not, it wont hurt.

    I've got a similar problem.

I can hear the cops coming up the dirt road a mile and a half down the valley away at least.
Can't hear a word yer saying in the pub, though.

I just nod my head and smile a lot.

At the risk of pointing out the obvious - go get it checked out by a professional.

Hearing loss can be due to a number of cuases, some treatable, some not. Doing nothing will ensure that it simply gets worse over time, while getting checked has the possibility of slowing, or even reversing the change.

I wear hearing aids. Some hearing loss is reversible, but hearing loss due to aging is generally not. It is due to the scilia (little hairs in your ear that pick up sound) becoming brittle and broken. Exposure to extremely loud noise can also permanently damage the scilia.

An audiolgists can do a quick test to determine if your hearing loss is permanent.

Older people tend to first exhibit a hearing loss at the higher frequencies. That is why you can hear low frequency background noise much better that the hot, girl trying to whisper in your ear!

Staying away from loud noise as much as you to help preserve what hearing you have left.

Hearing aids can make a big difference, but they are expensive and tend to amplify everything, not just the sounds you want to hear.

They have hearing aids that are truly almost invisible. They are called ITC (In The Canal) and the only thing that is really visible is a little clear (or skin tone) plastic grabber. Someone has to look inside your ears pretty closely to see it. They are expensive though, mine cost $5400.00 USD and that was 3 three years ago.

    I couldn't live without them!
