Thread: I Love African Food

Or North Western African food to be more precise.

I stayed with an African (Cameroonian) family a while back and of course with this came a totally different menu.

Although rice is still the staple, the flavour of their dishes were day and night compared to S/E Asian fare - lively, robust and very tasty indeed.

To start with, here's an example of the National Dish of Cameroon. The call it Ndole..pronounced exactly as it's spelt. I noticed they are rather fond of words which start with Nd, a bit like Ng in the Thai language.
Anyway, add a ladel of this to your boiled rice and it makes Green Curry look like a wet weekend in Margate.

Recipe's please. Okra Gumbo made in New Orleans came at least in part from Africa. All African dishes that I have ever eaten tasted good. I just don't know the names of the dishes or how to prepare them.

Are those small black spots Flies?

The soup kettle was always hot to keep the flies away from our laundry.

If rice isn't on the menu then it'll be automatically substituted by our next item - Fu-Fu. It is my understanding that this staple originated in Nigeria (btw, has anyone looked at the population of that country recently? I think a Family Planning Centre would be very useful) and is made with root vegetables (cassava?) and water, then pounded with a pestle into a doughy texture..

It may look like someone's dumped a pair of ram's knackers on your plate but it makes for a welcomed change to rice.

^ I still don't get it, Al - I haven't seen one pic on this thread of food that 'looks good'. It might taste better than it looks, it might taste great, but it looks fukin orrible...

My favourite meal came in the form of a kidney bean and smoked fish stew - remarkably tasty and aromatic with a nice wholesome texture to it. Mop up the surplus residue on the plate with some Fu Fu for an unrivalled North West African dining experience..

I won't be heading to a Camaroonyian restaurant any time soon... There's supposed to be an Ethiopian restaurant in Bkk; my friend went - she said it was disgusting, she couldn't eat a thing (but she is Thai...).

I am assuming those bits of batter are like the Thai ones. I like them. So they look good to me.

Ndole is a beef stew , the picture looks different to anything I've ever tried so I'd like to try it, mind you I guess I'm comparing it to Isaan fare...

Ooooo, Dairylea Triangles, it has bee a while; I love them, everybody loves them. Custard Creams are nice too...
