I just read through this thread. I live in the area of farang connection. Not a lot of good falang food up here, but there is a couple of places worth a mention. I must concur with another post. Norby's food out does FC by a long shot, both in quility and portions. "Tim and Pears" is another place, that cooks decent falang food, but it is out in the sticks, off of Prassat road. Not an easy find if you don't live in the area.

I know Martin has been sick and will leave that seperate. The reality is FC's food always sucked. If the OP is ever back in these parts during a "dry" spell, PM me. There are other places to get a pint, even during the "dry" season, and just a stones throw from FC.

English Breakfast at Norby's in Surin.

The beans have smoked bacon. Not bad for B135. Delicious.

The Farang Connection have changed ALL the staff and I believe acccept some of the criticism. Thats why they are trying to do something about it IMHO.

    That's good...

Responding to criticism in a positive way, i.e. improvement, can only be a god thing... It's certainly not the Thai way though so the owner I hope is fighting the cancer and will be okay, along with his business.

True that Sabang. Are you from Surin?

Nothing will change, Dave. If Martin put back anything near the energy and promotion into FC as he does promoting himself - it might survive. Frankly, I can't extend too much empathy towards a real charlatan and wanker that he is.

Oh dear, it looks a mess. The beans are domestic and therefore too sweet, the eggs are conjoined and clearly over cooked, the sausages look like German things and probably inappropriately seasoned for breakfast and the potatoes are simply too lumpen for anyone other than a blue collared thicko recently released from prison or South London.

Other than that, it looks fine ......... if I were a dog, that is.

    Up to a point, yes.

But my posts in this thread are probably contradictory not least because of inherent sentiment and consequential hypocrisy.

Anyway, what fuckwit would expect anything better in Surin.....?

The buffet breakfasts in Thong Tharin and the Majestic sre infinitely worse so I suppose there's your reference point.

Unless you prefer hard eggs, German sausages, domestic beans and that style potaotes.
Far better than the Farang Connect, Majestic Hotel or the Thong Tharin if they all gave a they all their breakfast away free.

that english breakfast doesnt look too appetising, the eggs and beans look inedible, although people are usually so hungry come breakfast that they will eat anything.

but any restaurant that goes to the trouble of serving bread in a breadbasket, (no matter that it looks so pretentious and out of place next to a greasy fry up with sloppy beans and a squashed tomato) and then has the nerve, the gall, and lack of taste to present wrapped butter in one of those small pink plastic fish sauce and chilli condiment dishes deserves to go out of business.

As of recent, I'm living about 25km's from Ubon, in the sticks. I like Surin though, and have overnighted there a few times in my travails down sarf and back. Surin has got a lot of life for it's size, and I don't just mean the farang scene. Norbys may not be haute cuisine, but it's a regular joint for me to get a decent feed when I'm in town. Also he operates a small 'import' supermarket, and his prices for imported wine & other booze are pretty good. I've never found a cheaper Calvados in Thailand than his, not by a long shot. As for nobby himself, I knew him a few years back when he operated a place in Nong Khai- nothings changed, he still is at loggerheads with the other farang operators in town, no love lost.

He brings a lot of tourism to Surin, especially during the elephant round up. Why is he a scam artist?

Martin his wife and I were friends in Ramsgate when we both ran Thai related businesses. He is neither a charlatan nor a wanker.

Shut your ugly gob up RS. I wouldn't piss on you if you caught fire.

Hope he can fight his health problems.

How can there be too much food on a plate Begbie? You must be English and don't do doggie bags.

Not that I have priced the little butter packets but I would also have thought that it may have been cheaper to 'curl' your own from a bulk pack.
