    Termites

    What to do about termites?

Having got back here after a few weeks I was pissed off to have a termite nest along my back wall,a patch about 2m long and 1m high. This stuff is rock solid and is spread amongst some flower pots.I have dug it away but I want to be sure it wont come back,is it possible to keep them at bay? What should I be using?

Ask Blackgang if you can borrow his AV for a week or so - that would sort the bastards out !

Many people ask "what does a termite look like?" Well here is the footage to show you. A Nasutitermes termite mound is broken into, and then turned over to reveal some of the amazing termite activity within. You can see here worker and soldier termites in incredible numbers. This species of termite is often found infesting homes in Sydney and other Australian towns and cities. Many pest control technicians will tell you that this species of termite does not attack homes, however I have seen some of the most severe damage in homes caused by this termite. Check our other videos online to see this termite in action attacking a home and feeding happily on Nemesis termite bait. If the colony cannot be located (unlike in this situation) then baiting is generally the preferred treatment option.
Note the tear drop shaped black head on the soldier termites which is one of the indicators of which species we are dealing with.

You didn't copy and paste that from a Sydney pest control company did you?

There are many ways to control termits, not only poisoning. I don't think there's anything that will ensure they never come back. You can poison all the soil surrounding your house, but this is a pretty drastic step.

Most termites are subterranean, if the timber isn't at ground level they either need cracks in concrete, mortar, brickwork etc. or they will build tunnels, which are generally visible. The best way to control them is in the design of your house.

If you have a termite nest, you need to get a good steel spike, a lump hammer and break open the nest.
You need to find the queen and kill her.
Many nests have no queens and are satellite nests of the main nest which could by upto a kilometre away.

I have them absolutely everywhere, they eat all sorts of stuff not just timber, even stuff like rice hulk mulch. Not sure if I could get rid of them, but I'm not too keen on poison.

Around where I live, I see many large mounds. I have a mound, 10 ft across and 5 ft tall in my garden. After I harvest the veggies, I plan on knocking it down and plowing up the area. Probably put some sort of a poisoin in also.

This will kill everything in the soil and probably be residual meaning the soil will be basically sterile - no worms, insects or microorganisms needed for growing veggies.

    Mark,
You should do something obout them, when we had our house built they poisened the ground around the house (so they say) next thing we saw was door frame was being eaten, got a firm in they drilled holes in the floor and injected poisen to kill them, seems ok now, they come and check now and then.

Just had a course of injections / spraying, but the little sods keep coming back, and have munched through quite a bit of fitted furniture in the kitchen area.

I have no idea where the nest might be, either. Can anyone recommend a company that can get rid of these bloody things for good?

Knock over the mound, pulverise the mound and save the soil to use in a wood fired earth oven, best material you can get to use for this purpose, dries rock hard and fireproof.

In fact, if anyone has a large amount, can I have it ??

Nawty is right... The best prefab cement you can get. A non-poisonous option is to see whether you have any other species of ants nests nearby. Then take away a substantial part of the termite nest, so that it reveals the rooms and tunneling, and a lot of nervous termites.
Scoop up a few 'strange' ants and let them do the scouting work.... They return home asap, telling the others where the 'Take away' is to be found. A 'Happy meal' for a few days, unless the termites can close the door, but you will not let that happen, will you?

Scooter, they don't really like Chaindrite / Shelldrite or whatever it is called these days - you can try soaking the ground / nest etc with a good dose of that! It's not cheap these days though, and needs to be repeated.

We got a company in CM when we first built the house, and they installed underground sprinklers and tubes and pipes etc. they come out 3 times a year and NUKE em, it is only about 1500 Baht a year - never had a problem, but get 20 Metres from the house and they are EVERYWHERE!

I've got a couple of enormous termite mounds on the wife's property and when I get back, it's the old gasoline trick for ém. If they don't die from drowning in #91, I'll set the fuckers on fire!
