    Purple dots/specks on sow

A friend of mine is operating a 12 sow piggery. One if her sow has a break out of purple specks or dots. The sow looks like a giant quail egg with purple dots/specks.

The sow has been serviced by the boar making her reluctant to inject antibiotics or deworming stuff.

    Any input would be appreciated.

I am so unlucky that if I fall into a barrel full of D*ick**s, I'd come out sucking my own thumb!

Sounds like classic hog cholera, which is highly contagious. In most countries, they would force you to slaughter and burn your entire herd. Also called swine fever. Pretty much wiped out in the West. Endemic in Asia.

Maybe mites?...Some pigs are more susceptible to them than others. But if it's left untreated the others will get it. Ivermectin treats them...

And by the way, this is a listed notifiable disease in the Philippines. Which means your friend MUST report it:

I read recently that there is some kind of parasite in the fish around the Mekong that takes a decade or so to manifest itself in a human. I've been thinking after eating such fish it a good thing I'm half dead already.

Surely another beer Lao wouldn't hurt.

The sow temperature is within the normal range and her appetite is not affected.

I really hope its not hog cholera. **crossing fingers. I'm fucked if it is.

It doesn't look like hog cholera. In most cases of hog cholera the ears, tail and snout turns purple. The poo is watery. The affected pigs will have high fever.

The sow in question has purple dots, her appetite hasn't changed, no fever and the poo is normal.

Would they still burn the entire herd if they were placed in separate pens. Food and water aren't shared. Each sow has a pig drinker and is given food separately.

I don't know, GF. You need to get a vet over to check it out. I do know it's highly contagious, but I don't know how it's transmitted. I could research it, but am scared I might inadvertently give you bad info. Good luck.

    Try this:

(but agree a vet is a necessity)

@GF: I hope too that it's not hog cholera. My family raised some pigs when I was a kid, so I kinda know how it is. Is there a vet near your place? Best of luck to you & your friend.

can not see clearly in those photo to much but here maybe afew pointers for you:
put that sow in a pen on her own. make sure the floor area is kept clean, clean drinking water is a must. take out any un eaten food, as this will attract flys ect...
you need to put more lighting in the barn as it looks very dark. extra light will help with fertility. example; you should be able to read a news paper in the barn.
check with other farmers in your area for similar problems/ check with you feed suplier about any changes in feed "makeup" and ask their advise on said problem.
how many days in "pig" is said sow? if late term could just be blotching. ie poor bood flow due to colder weather, cold floor/environment? have seen this in the past. are there many insects about in barn. ie insects causeing the problem?
could be many things could be nothing..... spend some time watching the animals and look at the environment they live in/eat in this could give some clues as how to inprove life of the animals.
it is ok to inject say pendistrep while in gestation or even some vaccines but i would not use ivermectin type med......use ivermectin once sow has weaned piglets and ready to comeinto heat again. again check with feed surplier as some feeds will have this type of med pre mixed in.

Thanks for all the advice. It helped my friend not to panic.

My friend was panicking because if the entire herd is slaughtered she'll be losing close to 300k pesos.

We've consulted a vet. The initial findings seem to be an allergic reaction to something... and mange (galis aso).

The lighting is okay during the day, but at night its almost non existent because there's still no electricity in this village. My friend is planning to light the piggery using solar electricity.

Sorry about the blurry pics. Those were taken at night..... I had a bad hang over around that time, so I was still wan and shaky during the day. 555

The vet recommended a very simple cure for the sow affected with dog mange. Bathing the sow in high concentration of chlorinated water. Seems to work like magic. The dots /spots are starting to disappear.

My friend has been thanking her lucky stars. It could have been much worse.
