EDL founder Stephen Lennon 'led fans' in fight in Luton

Stephen Lennon was "upping the ante" during the clash, magistrates heard

The founder of the English Defence League led a group of football fans into a street fight, a court has heard.

Stephen Lennon, 28, led Luton Town supporters and chanted "EDL" as they clashed with Newport County fans in Luton, it was alleged.

Luton Magistrates' Court heard Lennon, of Luton, was "egging on" and "upping the ante" as the two sets of fans fought on 24 August last year.

Mr Lennon denies using threatening, abusive or insulting behaviour.

The court was told he had been at the front of the group of Luton Town fans and gesticulated "come on then" at his opponents.

Timothy North, prosecuting, said two groups of opposing fans appeared close to Luton Town's Kenilworth Road ground five minutes before the evening kick-off.

"Officers noticed the presence of Mr Lennon in the group, at the head of the Luton Town supporters," he said.

"The impression was he was egging them on and leading them on. At one stage he was alleged to have shouted the words 'EDL'."

'Incredibly intimidating' Mr North said "there would have been a substantial degree of fighting" if police had not intervened.

However, a brawl involving about 100 fans did erupt, with only seven officers between them.

PC Robert Field, who was an acting sergeant in charge of six colleagues, said the officers wielded their batons in a bid to stop the men fighting.

He described the situation as "incredibly intimidating" to the public and said it was "clearly going to get out of control".

He said he recognised Mr Lennon because of previous dealings with him and because he had tried to arrest him earlier that day over another matter.

PC Field said: "He was a prominent person at the front of the group, giving a: 'Come on then' gesture."

He added: "I could see he was being looked at; he was holding the line of the Luton fans.

"He was being looked at to say: 'Do we go now?'."

PC Field said he believed the fight was pre-arranged.

    The case continues.

South Africa: 'Dead man' wakes up inside morgue

A 50-year-old South African man woke up inside a mortuary over the weekend and screamed to be let out - scaring away attendants who thought he was a ghost.

His family presumed he was dead when they could not wake him on Saturday night and contacted a private morgue in a rural village in the Eastern Cape.

He spent almost 24 hours inside the morgue, the region's health department spokesman told the Sapa news agency.

The two attendants later returned and called for an ambulance.

The man - whose identity has been withheld - was treated in hospital for dehydration.
At first the men ran for their lives” Sizwe Kupelo Eastern Cape health spokesperson
"Doctors put him under observation and concluded he was stable," Eastern Cape health spokesperson Sizwe Kupelo said.

"He did not need further treatment."

Mr Kupelo said the man woke up at 1700 local time (1500 GMT) on Sunday, demanding to be let out of the chilly morgue in Libode village, frightening the attendants on duty.

"At first the men ran for their lives," said Mr Kupelo.

Officials have urged the public to contact doctors or the emergency services so they can they can pronounce someone dead before calling an undertaker.

"You begin to you ask yourself how many other people have died like that in a morgue," said Mr Kupelo.

Pakistan city of Karachi hit by factional 'bloodbath'

At least 27 people have been killed in the southern Pakistani port city of Karachi in violence since Saturday, police and hospital sources say.

Most violence was reported from the eastern and central parts of the city, police say.

Hundreds of people have been killed in ethnic violence in this sprawling metropolis in recent months.

Much of it has involved activists of the city's dominant parties such as the MQM, the ANP and PPP.

The attacks are part of a cycle of violence which has claimed the lives of 200 people since 1 July, police officials say. Three of the deaths were on Monday.

The latest round of violence started when members of the Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) resisted attempts by a breakaway faction to come out of hiding - after a decade under cover - and enter areas of the city.

The MQM is mainly a party of Muslim Urdu-speaking people whose families moved to Sindh province at the time of the partition of India in 1947.

The MQM(H) broke away from the MQM in 1991, and since then the two have had a history of mutual violence and armed hostilities.

Vince Cable in attack on US 'right-wing nutters'

Vince Cable has attacked leading US Republican politicians for holding up a deal to reduce US government debt.

Speaking on the BBC's Andrew Marr Show, the business secretary called them "a few right-wing nutters in the American Congress".

Unless a deal on Capitol Hill is agreed before 2 August, the US Treasury could run out of money to pay its bills.

Mr Cable said it presented a bigger risk to the global markets than the continuing debt woes in the eurozone.

'Unthinkable' default President Barack Obama wants to cut US debts by both reducing government spending and raising taxes.

Republicans in Congress are strongly opposed to the tax rises.

The two sides have to come to an agreement before the current $14.3tn (£8.7tn) limit on US borrowing can be raised.

An emergency meeting between President Obama and congressional leaders on Saturday failed to make a breakthrough.

India Islamic school in Deoband sacks reformist leader

Mr Vastanvi says he is a victim of a conspiracy

India's best-known Islamic seminary has sacked its reformist leader just months after he took over for praising a Hindu nationalist politician.

Darul Uloom Deoband's vice-chancellor Ghulam Mohammed Vastanvi had been criticised for praising Bharatiya Janata Party politician Narendra Modi.

Mr Modi is the chief minister of the western state of Gujarat.

He is widely blamed for doing nothing to stop the 2002 riots in which more than 1,000 Muslims were killed.

Mr Vastanvi had pledged to update the seminary's curriculum and modernise the institution when he took over in January.

His praise for Mr Modi's development policies earned him the ire of conservatives and led to protests.

"Maulana Vastanvi has been removed from the post of vice-chancellor by Majlis-e-Shoora (governing council) of the seminary," Press Trust of India quoted Maulana Abdul Qasim Nomani, the new vice-chancellor, as saying.

Mr Vastanvi said he was a victim of a conspiracy.

Correspondents say Darul Uloom Deoband is one of the most respected Islamic theological schools in the region.
