Lean to Pergola

Sorry it's not a good picture, but I think you can just see that the balcony on the left is only half covered - it gets sun in the morning and is obviously open to rain.

So, I'm looking for some way to cover it - I've seen a few lean to pergolas used around here and think they look pretty good...

There's some idea above, but not exactly what I want. Basic idea is that it will ba attached to the house at one end and on posts at the other - it will be about 3m long by 2m wide. The roof needs to be covered with PVC or something like that and of couse it will have to be slightly inclined rather than flat..

So, anyone have any ideas? What would the materials cost in Thailand? How much would it cost to get a builder in to do it???

errrr call me a fuckwit,
but your idea will still let in the rain and the sun.

why not just make it out of steel, would be a lot cheaper and many companies specialise in that product. making it out of wood is expensive,lots of maintainance,heavy,and bulky(think about headroom).

Well, that's what I was trying to find out from the so called experts here, but they seem to be on holiday or sommit!

I built something very similar on the side of my mother's house back in the US a few years ago. I made it from Redwood (rot resistant) and covered it with corrugated fiberglass. I put it together in one afternoon and it didn't cost much at all.

Initially there was a bit of greenhouse effect under it, which was not good as it's primary purpose was to shelter an outside freezer!) so one of my sisters painted the top white which made a huge difference. Now a white roof won't match your existing red roof, but it might help keep your balcony a bit cooler.

I have something done like this on my sundeck. It costs me 200k incl. everything. You need PolyCarb but it will have a greenhouse effect. The whole things looks nice though. The structure was like 100k and it's all in wood. The Sundeck and a few other things were another 100k. PolyCarb alone was 20k as material

Thanks qwerty, I was hoping to use the special polycarbonate roof sheets that cuts out most of the sunlight, but it's quite expensive compared to the corrugated stuff so it will probably down to budget.

Hey Butterfly, what's with posting before me!!!!

200k is well out of my budget - how big is that BF and have you got any pictures???

how big ? 25 sq meter, quite small, but enough for a BBQ unit and a table. Pics ? it's still being built. I have to add doors, another expensive items. It's all in teak-wood color and it's looks nice. Roof is still leaking though

I got a solid awning built, its stainless steel framework with a solid plastic covering. (sorry not good description of material) but its a semi translucent & rigid. its about 8 m wide x 2.4 M cost erected 50,000 of yer Thai baht. The plastic material is curved over the SS frames. Cuts the sun and heat load off my windows, gives 99% rain protection.

^Yeah, I looked into one of those, can't remember how much it was going to cost - but then I saw some people had done wooden pagodas instead and thought they looked nice - I'd like to take a picture of the one I'm trying to copy, but don't know if it'd be a bit rude. Maybe I should just go and knock on their door and ask them about it!

On the roof of my townhouse, I will be erecting a lightweight tubular steel frame and covering it with that black mesh stuff. No waterproof, but damn cheap and it cuts the sun down by about 75%. Ask DD for prices because I can't remember.

I may well put a more substantial roof over part of it in the future, but that will do for the short term.

Hmmmm, offhand I can't remember how many zeroes there were at the end of it

The mesh stuff is less than 2,000baht per roll, 50 meters by 2 meters, haven't thought about the steel work price as the mesh is so light in weight we aint going into real big steel.

^One of my ideas to do it real cheap was to use that blue plastic piping to make a frame and then put that green mesh people use over their orchids to cut out the light - would only cost 500 baht, but I don't know if it would last long.

Anyway at the moment it's more important to keep out the rain than the sun!
