    False ceiling question.

One of the things on the list is to change the ceiling in the living room. There are 2 square recesses which are covered with what looks like asbestos sheeting; this makes the room look small as it presently sits flush with the tops of the doors. Above that is about 20 inches of spaces before you hit the concrete floor above.

Is fibre board available over here and if so is it reletively cheap to have done. The 2 areas are about 4 mtrs square approx.

    Cheers

Gypsum board or sheet rock as called in America is normally what is used. Relatively cheap and easy to install. You will need aluminum strips to attach the gypsum board but should be able to raise the ceiling about 15".

Plasterboard normal price fitted is around 250baht per square meter, probably you will have to pay more as it is such a small job.

When I rented this house it had an add on kitchen but no ceiling and also had a walled in Bathroom built in one corner, I had a contactor come in and did the job and added a bunch of light fixtures/switches and plugins for 3000 baht labor and I paid I think 7000 for sheet rock, aluminum stuff and 4 in glass blanket insulation and 3 conductor wire.
he room is about 20x 25 feet.

Is it worth getting the sheets with the reflective surface? Not sure if this will make a great deal of difference with it being a small area, and the fact i will be installing recessed lights.

Never seen plaster board with reflective surface. Anyway no need. Just get the regular stuff. It will be painted anyway.

They have plasterboard with reflective foil, never seen full sheets of it for sale already painted though and the way Thais work it would need repainting the day it was put up.

Trickiest part of installing plasterboard is getting the joints taped and finished properly. If not done right the seams will be very evident after painting.

The man I use has crews that work all over and he has many jobs going at the same time, and in all the towns around here, and his drywallers are excellent, when they finish it is taped perfectly and they also do a good job of painting.
He always has time to come see me and always has time to send a crew and he knows I will not put up with Thai standards.
He is now doing a 22 million baht apartment house here in Phetchabun among his other endeavors.

    false ceiling

Take a good look at how far up they finshed off the concrete work on the walls, sometimes they only finish them up to the point they plan on installing the ceiling.

Im interested to know about the use of asbestos in Thai building. I'm looking at houses at the moment to buy and one I saw today the false ceiling was dipping in one corner of the living room and also in the matching corner in the kitchen.

How long ago did Thailand stop using asbestos or did they ever stop? The house today was 15 years old.

yes, sheetrock and plasterboard are the same but..

I think the board they often use in Thailand is NOT the same as plasterboard. The latter is quite a lot thicker and is, surprisingly, plaster (gypsum) based

the boards I have seen in Thailand are cement based, and are probably better for humid climates, although the new plasterboards are moisture resisitant
    I have reported your post

but consider that Chinese gypsum/sheetrock/plasterboard is under suspicion now for chemical contamination in the States causing numerous health issues in hot humid climates..
literally 100's of thousand of homes during the housing boom and recent storms caused a domestic shortage along with cheaper costs of course thus they had this sheeting and gypsum installed and are now giving off nasty chemical smells (mostly sulfur) and the fumes are so strong they have been causing things like contaminated piping, wiring and silverware for a few examples..

The reason they suspect is that the Chinese are using a less refined ash in their products and there are numerous lawsuits cropping up.

sounds like you've put up a few ceilings in your time, or did you sell it?. you wouldnt put 12 mm board on a ceiling unless building inspector asked for it or circumstances required it. ie regulations.

I've decided i'm going to have the downstairs toilet done as well. Instead of ripping the old ceiling down, which i believe is asbestos, can it just be boarded over? I know asbestos is supposed to be lethal so should i have it ripped out?

i understood you were after the extra hight. so add more board and lose another 10mil plus. my take on asbestos. theres no doubt its dangerous, every matloe in the world over 50 or so has been living with it during his service life, not every sailer is dieing with asbestosis, every ship yard worker same same. every lagger same same. bottom line , if your lucky you dont die from asbestosis, if your unlucky you die from something else = the death rate same as its always been, one each. my oppinion is stay away from all dust . there aint no good dust.. do what you wanna do and fuck the consequencese. a man gotta do what a man gotta do. by the way, unlikely to be asbestos but... tit.

Raising the ceiling was in reference to the living room, not the bathroom.

It certainly looks like asbestons, either way i'll take it down as i want to fit new downlighters and cabling for the new shower. Fortunately the present roof has been screwed into battens in a grid formation, so assuming it is asbestos i won't need to brake it up. I'll also re-use the battens for the new ceiling as it looks quite true.
