Hi all.

Everyone wants different things in there homes. It is very simple to design you own house, no fancy CAD programs, just the good old XL spread sheet.

Its simple, like me, set the cells A to Z, .50 wide (that is point 50) and the cells 1 to whatever at 4.50, (four point five high). This will give you a square, or that close it does not matter.

Everyone has lived somewhere and something about your home was just not quite right, you wished that one room was slightly bigger, or the windows were to big or small, power points were in the wrong place for what you wanted or there were not enough of them. Work out what size rooms you want, and just use the outside border thingiiiiiiii in the top right hand side of the screen, instant house.

If you want to get really fancy, you can use the drawing part of XL and then you can move your rooms around and change them however you want. You can put furniture in to see how it fits your size rooms and place the power points and light switches in the correct place. Put the windows and doors in with the furniture you would like, it’s so easy. It’s all in XL.

I do it all the time; I cannot use the CAD programs at all, so I find this is very easy. The XL spread sheet is 256 columns wide, this gives you 25.6 metres, using each square as 100mm. The height or length is kilometers. I have had to joint 8 XL sheet together to do a drawing, but you need another program to do this.

I treat each square as 100mm, this gives you everything you need to design your home and take it to an architect to have it drawn, and you can even put all the measurements on it.

It is primative compared to CAD, but how many people are equiped to draw everything in CAD, This you can do very simple, and make your home look how you want it so that everything you want to put in it fits.

Tried Sketchup, for my computor ability and knowledge, I find it too hard to learn.

Hi HINO, I have a friend who does a lot of factory layout plans who also uses that program. Now he uses EXCEL to do all the initial stuff.

I do a lot of work with Illustrator and Photoshop, although I don't use all their features. Do you think it would be difficult for me to use Sketchup or chief Architect?

To be perfectly honest, I found it easier to use Photoshop.

Yeah, I've just downloaded the Sketch up and doesn't look that easy. Although it would probably help if I tried the tutorial.

I can't use excel and am no good at accounting.

For plans Illustrator is really good, but it's not 3D. For floor plans it's perfect though, because you've got the rulers along the top, just do everything in 1:100.

I use a paper and pencil, also a ruler, sometimes an eraser

very flexible and easily done

after finalising the drawings, I get a guy to put them onto CD for the planning stage
