some clever bugger on a thread about bamboo farming suggested soaking in salt water..IMO brilliant ..never seen a softwood bit of driftwood attacked by land born rot or insects.
Building with wood? ..big bit of pipe or trough immerse beams etc in salt water..better than toxic expensive commercial products methinks ..antibiotic too?
Probably still take varnish or with a bit of sanding...works on boats...salt water exposed wood is never attacked by land born rot.?

I don't think that that is true, sorry to say.

As soon as rain water touches the wood the salt washes away (which until that point would have been inhibiting the stuff that rots the wood) and the wood starts to rot.

reasonable i guess but anything that is "salted" has to be soaked/immersed for a good while methinks. Was thinking that simply rinsing salt fish etc don't remove much salt?

Even commercial products like pressure treated wood don't last forever. Topical applications peel and flake and become ineffective after time too?

Anyways just me musing about stuff as one does.

What I want to know is WTF can I not find gal' nails,gal hangers/joiners/post saddles etc here....lol

I seem to recall somewhere on here someone soaking wood in some kind of salty solution for a building project but i think it was Borax they were using rather than salt, in a process like this.



What makes me think that salt by itself it not enough is that a boat, when not treated with pitch or a resin when out of the water rots quick smart.

I wonder if there is a way to plasticise wood like Gunther von Hagens does with bodies? Drives out all moisture and replaces it with a resin. That way the wood would always be the right colour (assuming you get the resin the right shade) and would last forever.
