    Tile advice needed

Ok first of all i didnt pick this tile design it came with the house. The house and tiles are about 4 years old.

When coming home this afternoon resting on my couch after a nice mc ride i start to hear some noise. I look in the direction of the fan as it seems something is getting whacked. Then i look at the floor in front of the fan and the tile are popping up like a alien is trying to escape. I am like wtf is going on i never saw anything like this.

Seriously i assume the house had some movement and the tiles just popped. My question is should i just try and reinstall them? Or should i investigate further?

    Definitely investigate further.
    Tiles don't just pop up.
    Something is moving.
More will move if you don't source the problem quickly.
The whole place could be ready to collapse.

What part of Thailand are you in? If near Burma possible was a minor earthquake.

ok i am having my beer.

Investigate further how? All the tiles near the walls are secure. No ouside or inside wall or pillar cracks. Checked the tiles in other rooms and a couple may need more cement nothing that seems abnormal.

About all you can do. If structurally all looks good then replace the tiles. The pic you posted appeared the floor was buckling.
Hard to tell but appears the tiles were not properly set in the concrete.
Could be some moisture wicked up through cement and caused the tile to come off.

the cement looks good with no appearent cracks. I dont think they use thinset like in the states and i dont see any trowel grooves. Maybe the fan cooling and heating that area could have caused the problem.

Where it is a it's highest point dig a trial hole into the concrete to see what's happening below. The trial hole only needs to be wide enough so you can put a torch (flashlight for Americans) in. Take your option after the check.

I had exactly the same problem a few years ago in Phuket at a guesthouse that I leased. In the middle of the night there was a huge bang and a whole row of tiles popped up just like in your photo.

It's due either to a minor earthquake or the building moving (both of which are not in themselves cause for concern). The problem occurs because Thais tend not to allow tile-movement when they lay the tiles - they should provide a few mms of tile grout between each tiles, as opposed to butting them up right against each other.

The solution is that you might need to shave a bit off the edge of the row of tiles to allow you to fix them in the narrowed space.

Or you can do what my ex did and just leave them sticking 1 inch up in room, thus providing hours of amusement as naive guests tripped up and went headlong across the bedrooms....

as Simon mentioned, the tiles do look very close together, so maybe some movement has stressed them to the point they had to pop

they are horrible anyway, so rip them up and retile the room, leaving enough room for grouting

they are horrible lol!!!! Went to the movies and came home to see a few more have risen up. All the tiles are butted very close to the wall and i believe that is the issue.
I am sure they dont use flexible grout.

Anybody who can recommend a good tiler here in pattaya pleaee pm me. I dont have the energy to screw with this.

It's called "expansion & contraction" thats why they are laid using spacers. Plus a rapid change of temperature..

Expansion: when you go into the local bar with your chest out and your wallet full after winning on the GG's

Contraction: you arrive home from the bar and you fancy some "conjugal" but the wife has her back to you and you need more than a "crow-bar" to gain entry.

I think Dead Metal is spot on.
I've been woken a few times during the night when the temp has dropped, thinking my house was falling down.
A friend of mine had the same problem as the op.

looking at the picture, the sun heats up that area,
    do the tiles fit back,
mite be expansion. unusual for ceramics,
    relay with grout joints

it is probably the cement base that is expanding, and you cannot relay them with bigger joints!

Wouldnt it be contracting as opposed to expanding?

From what I can make out it looks like the tiles were set too tight and the adhesive cement put on very sparingly.

First thing I would do is check with the supplier whether these ties are still in stock as I feel you will have to lift a few (maybe the entire room floor area) and lay them correctly. In doing so you will certainly break a few and if you cannot replace them you will have to re-tile the whole area using a different tile.

Once you have lifted the tiles you can check whether moisture is permeating through the slab from the underside as this I believe is your main problem.

Have the tiles been laid on a wooden floorboards ! if so you need to put sheets of ply down first and screw it down every 150mm. If this is the case and you do lay and screw ply then the ply would need a "UPVA" treatment, making sure you buy the correct one.

Obviously you have recently cut way back on your consumption of alcohol as no sober person could possibly live with those tiles!
Tiles just "popping" up is normal when running a fan at + 350 RPM?
Be far easier to start consuming more beer than replacing those tiles!
Bless you Sir - are you blind?
