If anyone wants a large magnet for wiping HDD's, My old cars subs are dead but the 3kg magnets might be usefull.

NATO have a standard for erasing disks their own disks; get an erase program that follows this standard and trust it.

if you don't

you want to keep HD data confidential after you have finished with the disk, buy 2.5" hard disks. these use glass platters and these are particularly easy to grind up into sand.

if you have 3.5 disks; physical destruction of the disk surface is necessary. take the platters out and shread, melt or sand paper them.

Military standard erasure sounds effective enough, but to physically destroy a hard disk I'm sure NATO have shredders that can chew them up and spit out the filings.
