CHIANG MAI, 16 January 2014 (NNT) - Widespread frost was spotted in Chiang Mai’s Doi Inthanont peaks on Thursday as the temperature plummeted by up to 5 degree Celsius during the past few days.

It is the second day that frost has been reported as the mercury hovers around -1 degree to 3 degree near the peaks.

According to the Meteorological Department, a high pressure cell covering Thailand’s upper parts has weakened, bringing the temperature up slightly by 1-2 degree. However, in mountainous areas in the North and Northeast, the average temperature is measured at 2-5 degree.

Over 3,000 tourists have not only flocked to the Chiang Mai’s mountains to take in the cold air but also to view the Wild Himalayan Cherries or Thailand’s cherry blossoms, which only bloom in January.
