AIR MACAU ROUTE TO BANGKOK REOPENED: Fares similar to those of AirAsia

Air Macau will reopen its Bangkok-Macau route on Sunday, with daily flights and round-trip ticket prices similar to those of discount airline AirAsia.

During its introductory period to March 28, Air Macau will offer round-trip tickets for Bt5,300, excluding Bt1,800 for VAT, airport tax and fuel surcharges.
The price is slightly less than the average round-trip fare offered by AirAsia.
Passengers travelling with Air Macau during this promotional period will also receive a 10-per-cent discount coupon for cosmetics and perfume at duty-free shops in Macau.
Air Macau general manager Joy Kong said the airline's typical round-trip fare for Bangkok-Macau used to be Bt12,000, excluding VAT and airport tax. The airline cancelled the route in March, due to a decrease in travellers as a result of the tsunami.
The airline has dominated the Bangkok-Macau route for more than seven years.
Several European airlines plus Thailand's Orient Thai have offered chartered flights to Macau for years. But for most of this year, AirAsia was the only one to offer regular service in the form of three scheduled flights a week.
"We will not compete with AirAsia even though we are operating the same route and are sensitive to price competition. We will focus on business and incentive travellers," said Kong.
"AirAsia is focused on budget tourists. Moreover, travellers departing from Bangkok for Macau are not required to stop over in Hong Kong, as they were in the past," said Kong.
Thai Airways International offers only Bangkok-Hong Kong flights. Passengers can then take a ferry to the casino enclave.
The flights are aimed at attracting Thai tourists visiting Macau for New Year's Eve and Chinese New Year.
Jarunee Tantinukul, marketing manager for the Macau Government Tourist Office in Bangkok, said the route would boost the numbers of tourists between the two destinations.
More than 60,000 Thais travelled to Macau during the first 10 months of this year, up 63 per cent year-on-year.

I nearly went there a couple of years ago. I ended up staying with a mate in Hong Kong (Simon & Nee) instead. Great trip, but seriously expensive.
