khaosan road area to sukhumvit

Have to go to bangkok at the end of the month to get a cataract sorted, and as i am bringing the missus and kids this time i thought i might stay somewhere a bit different , i usually just stay around sukhumvit but thought i might try the khaosan area or riverside , Not being all that familiar with bangkok could someone tell me how far is the khaosan area away from sukhumvit soi 22 and roughly how long does it take to get there in a taxi? dont want to miss my appointment .any hotel advise in those areas would be good to , around the 2500 to 3000 baht range

At the far end (police station end) of Koh San behind the temple is Rambutree Village within walking distance of Khao San but a bit quieter / chilled out. I'd say all the rooms would be cheaper than that around there though. 1500 tops.

Distance wise, I'm not too sure, I've tended to get a motorbike taxi going to Sukhumvit that takes 10-15minutes.

Depending on what time of the day I would estimate anything from 30 min to a good hour to get from Khao San to Suk 22. Traffic is really badly screwed up right now.

For me the problem with Khao San is that there is no public transport and picking up a taxi in one of these touristy places can be a bit frustrating.

You should have no problem finding a nice place near Suk 22 for 3,000 baht - not sure about the riverside though

Try and get a riverside view at the Navalai. Nouvocity,s pool and gym are excellent. Both within walking distance (about 700m) of KS rd.

You need 60mins to 90mins depending on traffic from KSR to Suk 22. You could take taxi to Ratchathewi bts and get off Phrong Phong bts to avoid rush hour traffic. The river boat from the Golden Mount is another option.

I agree with Alwarner, Rambuttri Village is a good cheap option, 2 roof top swimming pools about 1000bht per night. Its a bit noisy with revelers coming home at all hours, and cleaners moving around in the morning.

Khao San Road/ River.

Good choice for family trip, tourist friendly and less jaded.

Take Taxi's between your hotel and Hua Lumpong, then ride the MRT to Sukhumvit. Cheap and quick.

Going by taxi from KSR to Suk Soi 22 can take 30 min with no traffic (middle of the night), but potentially quite long (typically an hour or less, but up to 2h possible) in traffic. The problem with KSR part of town is that you're stuck with taxis (or buses), and don't have any easy alternatives to bypass the traffic problem.

With a 2500-3000 budget, just stay near the Skytrain. You can get a 5* hotel for that price.

thanks for all the advise, sounds like i might be better of just sticking to sukhumvit area, unless someone has any ideas that might appeal to her indoors and the kids,

As a family you should all dress as Khaosan Warriors for the day. No shoes, fisherman pants, beer singha vest etc (you might want to get your hair braided and a few henna tattoo's)

Then spent the day mingling with the locals. You'll all need your own convincing back stories as to what countries you've been to, various treks you've been on, how you've seen the "Real Thailand" and the countries your going to next on your travels.

Only use public transport, no mobiles aloud and you've got to eat and drink as cheaply as possible. Cash only.

You'll have a great day out!

Stay at the Rompho Mansion. 15 min walk to soi22. Nice swimming pool and lots of nice local things to eat. 5 min from Khlong Toei market. Free shuttle to queen sirikit station. Much better location than Kao Sanrd.

Actually it's not anymore, the past several years have seen a steady improvement to cater to the Japanese business tourist.
The pool was renovated this year, and the past several years they've been renovating floor by floor.
You can still get a decent cheap room on the 6th floor, but gone are the days of the
thick green shag carpets which were admittedly pretty nasty.
For location the Rompho is hard to beat, off the tourist beat, yet close enough to be very convenient access for the major points of the city.
Mainly the local food is terrific. The best kao mu, issan soup/somtam, and chinese spring rolls are a stones throw from the hotel. There's a very decent pizza/french restaurant in the hotel now.
Sadly the Thai massage on the second floor is gone, but I still have many of the girls phone #'s.
I've been staying there for years and it's one of my favorite places.

As far as proximity to soi 22 it really can't be beat.

Living here my knowledge of hotels is somewhat limited. I know a couple of clean and cheap hotels hear the teak palace which are kind european 3 star affairs that don't english, 1000ish per night .

I would say that transport round kao san is a pain even by car, better half's grandpars ashes are in the temple at the end of kao san. To be honest the whole area from kaosan down to old siam, i either drive, bus or walk. the taxi's are a serious pain particularly if you want to go out of the area towards sukumvit or the BTS. and as for the tuk tuk's you are all too young for the language I would used to describe them.

Depends on the age of the kids, but I wouldnt let yourself be put off the area around the KS road by the bitter old fools that hog this site, as I am sure you are aware the Sukumvit is just a traffic jam with shopping malls. There are more and more 4 and 5 star hotels in the KS area, catering for all ages and budgets and not just for the over repeated cliche of the land of the unwashed. The kids might enjoy it more and you can find, a good quality hotel at a reasonable price. The palace and reclining Buddha are 10 mins away and there are lots of decent places by the river to eat at night.

Thanks everyone for the advice, it sounds like i would be better of in the sukhumvit area, rather than spend a lot of time in taxis, we fly in from Laos and ive got a couple of doctor appointments so were not really there for the sight seeing, Thought it might be nice to go somewhere different, Her indoors is addicted to seafood so i will just take her to a Somboon restaurant and she should be happy enough, just need to find something to amuse the kids.

Definitely stay on Suk 22 if you have business there, and make the trek to Khao San if you must- in Bangkok, the last thing I want to do is worry about getting somewhere important on time- if it takes extra time to get to the places you want to relax and play, no big deal.
