Out of my price range too. But a friend of mine later became Chord's International Sales rep. And i knew the owner, Craig at Wilson Benesch which is why i got a deal.
To be honest i became obsessed, and often found faults rather than listen to the music, as many so called audiphiles do. My system was expensive but I sold some speaker cable to a guy worth 11,000 quid when i managed a place in Manchester. He spent over 100k on his system!
I also sold the very first pair of Quad 2 anniversary tube amps serial 3 and 4. 6k and they were shit!
You bullied, you laughed, you lied, you lost!
^those were the days eh
There's certainly a law of ever decreasing returns... It's easy to get carried away. I was speaking to me brother, and he couldn't believed I'd spent 60 squid on some headphones, reckons his 10 pound pair are just as good, reckons his 28 pound Logitech speakers are as good as my Beats Pill (might be closer to the truth here...). I suppose the answer is, if it is to him, then great.Originally Posted by Jesus Jones
I was very happy with my 400 pound cd player (Arcam), casstte player, amp (Naim Nait 2) and speakers. That was about as high as I could or wanted to go - but if you have the money (or the contacts) then why not get better stuff if it makes you happy.
I wonder what the kinda optimum level is? I reckon for a single source then 1500 pounds would get you a great setup. You were then spending lots more cash for not much more sound improvement - but it's all subjective.
I do like the sound of your gear though...

As I said, I had a pair of Spendor BC1's. Went to an audio show in Melbourne and saw a pair of Yamaha NS1000's when they first came out, they were unheard of then, almost bought them, I'm kicking myself that I didn't.
I feel for you mate - Yamaha make some badass speakers yes sireeOriginally Posted by palexxxx
Interesting, never heard of them before... $1000?
If you can get them for $1000, snap them up, bargain.
^ In fact, buy me a pair too. I'll pay ya back, honest.
NS1000 were a classic speaker, probably the best they did and still sought after in the UK with products like Leak, Garrard and Quad.
Betty, that system you had was good. I sold loads of those combos.
Naim with Epos or Spendor was popular. Linn was too but i never rated it apart from the Sondek.
...
I'd be interested to hear them in a nice setup against my EPOS ES11s, but it doesn't really work like that; matching systems and getting a sound that suits you is important - changing out one component may or may not improve the sound in the way expected.
Had some Tannoy Reveals in the studio and the equivalent domestic speakers at home. Denon amp, Technics tape deck and a cd player that I cant remember. Nothing special, but sounded good enough for me.
& that's the main thing!Originally Posted by coolhandluke

^ Nowt wrong with Tannoy speakers.
TANNOY WESTMINSTER ROYAL SE | LOUDSPEAKERS | AUDIO EMOTION
I thought wharfdale were bought out by the chinks? My mate bought Tannoy cheviots in the 70's, still the best speakers I ever heard
Personally, I'm not fond of the Tannoy speakers I've heard due to bass wallow and lack of control, lack of depth of stage, etc. But, that might have been that I just looked at a couple of lower end pairs, and maybe they were not well matched/set up.
Do they make these in a very large size?
I may have a use in mind for which they were probably not intended.
The picture is actual size, Stoker.
Tannoy was difficult and quite critical with system choice. Their dual concentric was quite bright at times but on a decent pre and tube power amp they sounded great. The definition range was very good. Wasn't my favorite and to be honest there wasn't many Brit speakers I liked other than Proac and Keswick. KEF's early stuff was very good, much like the spendor and Epos but like so many they were governed by What Hifi and went into the budget, mass produced range.
There were some very good US products but twice the price in the UK. Magnaplanar was a good brand using ribbon tweeters when I was in the trade. Krell and Wilson was another top brand. Jeff Rowland too.

The pictures just look like stuff I couldn't afford...
