Thread: Cretinous chopper pilot lucky to survive

A helicopter helping to install a Christmas tree crashed in dramatic fashion, but the pilot amazingly escaped serious injury.

Footage captured by Television New Zealand shows the pilot slowly descending from about 25 feet on Auckland's waterfront when the chopper's blades appear to get caught in cables attached to scaffolding.
The rear of the helicopter snaps and the pilot is hurled about as the helicopter smashes into the ground.
According to the television station, pilot Greg Gribble, who has 20 years' experience, said he was "doing fine" after his ordeal.

I think a chopper pilot needs to be mad if not cretinous to do that.

I would go for mad, not cretinous. But fearless in such a situation is nearer to cretinous than to mad.

Blimey! I was living on a yacht right next to that recently. What is the noise? The jet engine tearing apart? Lucky pilot.

The cables handing loose down the tower, where not secured, then the prop wash pushed the cables out and into the rotor arc. Sometime it is not your time.

Don't they have cranes in New Zealand then.

Heathrow warns of long strike delays - Telegraph
