Cretinous chopper pilot lucky to survive

A helicopter helping to install a Christmas tree crashed in dramatic fashion, but the pilot amazingly escaped serious injury.

Footage captured by Television New Zealand shows the pilot slowly descending from about 25 feet on Auckland's waterfront when the chopper's blades appear to get caught in cables attached to scaffolding.
The rear of the helicopter snaps and the pilot is hurled about as the helicopter smashes into the ground.
According to the television station, pilot Greg Gribble, who has 20 years' experience, said he was "doing fine" after his ordeal.

And hopefully 20 years is where the idiots experience stops.

Helicopters have so many moving parts trying to come from apart!

I've seen that happen up close. Forest fire. The guy on the roof was more at risk. My dead chopper pilot friend yo-used to say that every chopper wants to fly upside down. This one managed it.

I have seen a rescue helicopter landing in a very narrow street, with no more clearance than 30cm or 1 foot with tree branches or lamp posts at all four sides.

I think a chopper pilot needs to be mad if not cretinous to do that.

That makes him fearless, not cretinous.

I would go for mad, not cretinous. But fearless in such a situation is nearer to cretinous than to mad.

Blimey! I was living on a yacht right next to that recently. What is the noise? The jet engine tearing apart? Lucky pilot.

Lucky workers you mean. I am amazed the aerofoils didn't smash through any of them, in fact they didn't appear to break into pieces at all.

My experience of helicopter usage, on oil platforms, was to stand well back and in a safe area until allowed forward, by the H&S marshal, to get on.

The cables handing loose down the tower, where not secured, then the prop wash pushed the cables out and into the rotor arc. Sometime it is not your time.

Sorry, I'm freezing my nuts off at Heathrow for a couple of days.

This is what is known as "pilot error".

Hope they publicise the accident report.

Watch the second film, where the guy on the ground yanks the cable.
    May not be pilot error.

The cretin appears to be the bloke pulling the cable.

Heathrow warns of long strike delays - Telegraph

"Delays at Heathrow are expected to be particularly severe, not only because it is the country’s largest airport but also because of its flight pattern: nearly 100 long-haul services are due to arrive before 9am on Wednesday.
Normand Boivin, Heathrow’s operating officer, said: “Modelling of the impacts of strike action on passenger flows at Heathrow show that there are likely to be very long delays of up to 12 hours to arriving passengers.
