Georgia Militia, Domestic Terrorism and the Blurry Line of Patriotism

COMMENTARY | Standing accused of domestic terrorism, four Georgia citizens pleaded not guilty this week to charges in federal court, according to the Associated Press.

While details of the case are few, the tide of public opinion seems to have already tried and convicted the four men, ranging in age from 55 to 73. In the post-9/11 years, the very association of the word "terrorist" has been enough to immediately create a public image so negative that virtually no proof or details are needed sway public opinion further. With sketchy details and a very questionable witness, the evidence available instead points to a case of entrapment.

Of the few details given regarding this case, the FBI informant, originally arrested in South Carolina on child molestation charges, worked with the FBI to track the four men for over seven months. The FBI had their informant infiltrate the group as they met at the Waffle House, among other locations. On at least one charge concerning the purchase of explosives, the informant apparently gave the accused money, reports the AP, from his own pocket to fund the transaction with an undercover agent.

Identified as "militia" members, the four accused face another social stigma of public perception. Viewed as groups of paramilitary extremists, modern militia movements are broadly seen with negative connotations, on par with that of terrorists.

Included in the details of the case were the ownership by one suspect of 52 guns and 30,000 rounds of ammunition. While this would be completely consistent with a literal interpretation of the Second Amendment, somehow the notion of a well-armed militia in 2011 is perceived as a threat to national security. It could be argued that this federal indictment is more broadly a working case study of the Second Amendment itself.

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

Admittedly the Second Amendment is a highly debated topic, with dramatically different interpretations. Many view that when the founders of our great nation first created the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights, the right to keep and bear arms was included as a measure to combat future tyranny from an over-reaching government. While our founders clearly never envisioned all that the future might hold, they most certainly created the Second Amendment as a means to keep the power in the hands of the people.

As the case against the four men accused in Georgia progresses, more details and information will come to light. At this point, it is only clear that these four men felt that the current government no longer represents their view of America, and at the very least, they were preparing to take action.

Perhaps a government which would use a child molester to first tape the drunken ramblings of these gentlemen at the Waffle House, then blatantly entrap them by presenting both the money and the opportunity to make illegal purchases is precisely the type government our forefathers envisioned at the time the Second Amendment was drafted. In that vein, should the four accused men in Georgia be considered terrorists or patriots? It is the same blurry line that our forefathers walked at the very time our country was created.

An entrapment technique the US government has used to catch and prosecute quite a few moslem terrorists without triggering too much sole searching on the part of the US right. Its not too surprising that they would turn this successful and relatively accepted techniques to catch other groups.
Perhaps lesson in why you should care about the rights of people and groups you don't like?

^ yes it is. Because they don't give a shit about pedos or other losers, this has always been about changin laws to let them get at the people they really don't like - socialists and others who will try to foil their attempts at creating a world of slaves that are there to let the rich circle their wagons. That's always been their goal
My mind is not for rent to any God or Government, There's no hope for your discontent - the changes are permanent!

Court hears Georgia terror suspects on tape

GAINESVILLE, Ga. -- They've been nicknamed the "grumpy old men" and the "geriatric four". They're accused of plotting murder over breakfast at a Waffle House. The indictments against them read like a novel: secret meetings, explosions, betrayal, and murder. But Tuesday, Fredrick Thomas (73), Dan Roberts (67), Ray Adams (55), and Samuel Crump (68) were focused on one simple word: bail.

And for the second time since it began last week, their detention hearing ended for the day with no decision. The men will return to jail until tomorrow's continuation, set to begin at 10am.

The four men have been in custody since their November first arrest. Thomas and Roberts are charged with conspiring to obtain explosives and possession of an unregistered silencer. Adams and Crump are charged with conspiring and attempting to make ricin, a biological toxin.

Tuesday marked what federal Judge Susan Cole called "part two" of their detention hearing. She will wait to decide on bond until after she's heard the cases against all four defendants.

After nearly seven hours of testimony, Judge Cole decided to recess for the day, setting "part three" for Wednesday morning at 10:00.

    The Informant
FBI special agent Korneski spent the morning on the stand laying out some of the prosecutions weightiest evidence: audio recordings of the men plotting to blow up government buildings and assassinate government officials. Agent Korneski is the Atlanta regional supervisor of domestic terrorism for the FBI. He testified evidence against the group calling themselves "the covert group" includes more than fifty recorded meetings and conversations.

Korneski says a confidential informant sent a letter to the FBI in Columbia, South Carolina while he was incarcerated on charges of child molestation and possession of child pornography. Agents went to the jail and interviewed the informant about various criminal activities within a militia group. The informant failed a lie detector test when questioned by the FBI, but did not testify about the Covert Group at that time. He has not taken another lie detector test since.

All four defense attorneys brought up the informant's pending charges in an attempt to discredit his information - a major part of the prosecution's case.

    The Connection: Anthony Howard
At that time, he did not mention The Covert Group, but did tell agents about another man: Anthony Howard. According to the informant, Howard was transporting firearms to militia groups while working as a truck driver. The FBI put Howard on a watch list and he was caught at the Canadian border. Agent Korneski testified Howard had a book with him called "Poor Man's James Bond Book". He also had a small derringer in his wallet that would allow him to shoot the gun by pulling his wallet. He also allegedly had another gun sewn into his shirt. Three computers containing child pornography were also found in the search. Howard was arrested. According to the FBI, he originally attended several Covert Group meetings. It was while investigating Howard that the FBI uncovered the group's plans to assassinate government officials, blow up buildings, and spread ricin.

    The Tapes
The crux of the prosecution's case comes down to more than 50 recorded meetings, phone conversations and car trips between the defendants. Those tapes span began in March 2011 and spanned until November, days before the men were arrested. Several of those tapes were played in federal court on Tuesday. On one, Thomas was recording saying "There is no way for us, as militiamen, to save this county, to save Georgia, without doing something highly illegal. Murder. That's (expletive) illegal, but it's got to be done." And later: "when it comes to the constitution, some people are going to have to die."

During the meetings, the recordings include conversations that discuss targets: the ATF, IRS, DoJ, and FBI. The group was hesitant, but had not ruled out, the National Guard. The U.S. Attorney's office argued they wanted to use bombs to hit specific buildings and silencers to shoot government officials. "There's too few of us," one recorded conversation said. They had hoped to recruit twenty to thirty members for the plan.

During the hearing, Assistant US Attorney Robert McBurney showed two pieces of evidence taken from Thomas's house: a rifle and a silencer. He also said Thomas's wife had knowledge of the alleged terror plot, citing a recording where Thomas apparently confirms it.

"My wife pretty much knows what we're doing," Thomas is heard saying on a recording.

Agent Korneski spent the morning on the stand explaining about a dozen different recordings and connecting the four defendants.

In the second part of the day, the focus shifted to defendants Sam Crump and Ray Adams, who are charged with conspiring and attempting to make ricin.

In one recording, Agent Korneski identified Adams' voice suggesting they add ricin to all federal buildings and government officers, rendering them "toxic," so employees can't come to work.

"What you can't see scares you the most," Adams is heard saying in another recording.

Family members of all four men say the charges are baseless, and the men should be released. They remain in custody as the bond hearing continues.

Militia group ring leader pleads guilty

    The teabaggin loons are still at it;

SAVANNAH, GA – Assistant District Attorney Isabel Pauley was at the Long County Courthouse in Ludowici, GA Friday to negotiate a guilty plea in the death penalty murder case of the State of Georgia v. Isaac Aguigui.

This high-profile case received national and world-wide media attention. The case involved several U.S. Army soldiers based in Fort Stewart who formed and were part of an anti-government domestic terrorist group they named FEAR (Forever Enduring Always Ready). This group was not limited to Georgia, as the group also plotted to establish a domestic terrorist cell in Washington State, the home state of 2 of the defendants, and recruit former and active-duty military members there as well. The group discussed bombing the Forsyth Park Fountain in Savannah, GA, and in Washington State – bombing a dam and poisoning the state’s apple crop. The group’s ultimate goal was to overthrow the federal government and assassinate President Barack Obama.

The group believed their plans were going to be uncovered by former soldier Michael Roark, who served with the defendants in the Army’s 3rd Infantry Division at Fort Stewart. To keep Roark from revealing their plot, they murdered him and his girlfriend, Tiffany York, on December 5, 2011 by shooting them in the woods near the Army post.

The negotiated guilty plea was for the group’s founder and leader, Pvt. Isaac Aguigui and resulted in him receiving the sentence of life in prison without parole.

FBI: 3 NC men built bombs, fearing martial law

    They are at it again..

    GASTON COUNTY, N.C. (WTVD) --
The FBI raided a home and business, arresting three men on Saturday in Gaston County.

Walter Eugene Litteral, 50, Christopher James Barker, 41, of Gastonia, and Christopher Todd Campbell, 30, of Mount Holly were charged with conspiring to violate federal laws governing firearms and explosive devices and related charges, according to authorities.

On June 18 law enforcement received information that Litteral and Barker were attempting to make explosives.

Officials say the men were creating the explosives because they feared that the U.S. government intended to use the armed forces to impose martial law. They planned to resist with violent force.

Around July 22 officials learned that Campell was reconstructing live grenades from "dummy grenades," which are sold legally as military artifacts. Litteral had been purchasing various military equipment in preparation including ammo, radios, Kevlar helmets, and body armor.

The FBI learned that Litteral and Campbell wanted to make pipe bombs and had some of the needed parts. According to the investigation Barker provided pipe fittings. The men planned to test the bombs in Shelby, N.C. and Litteral said, "It is going to be great," according to court documents.

Litteral also tried to purchase a firearm and ammunition for Barker, who could not himself due to prior criminal felony convictions.

The charge of conspiracy to violate laws governing firearms and explosive devices carries a maximum potential penalty of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

Campbell is also charged with receiving, possessing, and making a firearm which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

The three remain in federal custody pending their hearings which have been set for Thursday.

Domestic Terrorism: MAGA Bomber Targets Obama, Clintons, CNN With Pipe Bombs

Dubbed The MAGA Bomber by Twitter, a terrorist sends explosive devices to leading Democrats and other targets of President Trump.

No doubt inspired by the violent rhetoric of Donald Trump, a right-wing terrorist(s) is sending explosive devices to individuals and organizations attacked by President Trump.

    The New York Times reports:

Pipe bombs were sent to former President Barack Obama and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, as well as to CNN’s offices in New York, sparking an intense investigation on Wednesday into whether a bomber is going after targets that have often been the subject of right-wing ire.
    NBC News reports:

The Time Warner Center in New York, which houses CNN’s office, was evacuated Wednesday after a suspicious package arrived that appeared to contain a “live explosive device,” authorities said.

The package was similar to suspicious packages found near the New York home of Bill and Hillary Clinton and another sent to former President Barack Obama in Washington, D.C., earlier in the week, law enforcement officials said. Another package was addressed to former Attorney General Eric Holder and but sent back to the fraudulent return address, that of Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla.

During a briefing on the package sent to CNN, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said a device had also been sent to his Manhattan office.
In a statement earlier today Vice President Mike Pence condemned the terrorist attack via Twitter:

We condemn the attempted attacks against fmr Pres Obama, the Clintons, @CNN & others. These cowardly actions are despicable & have no place in this Country. Grateful for swift response of @SecretService, @FBI & local law enforcement. Those responsible will be brought to justice.

    — Vice President Mike Pence (@VP) October 24, 2018

We condemn the attempted attacks against fmr Pres Obama, the Clintons, @CNN & others. These cowardly actions are despicable & have no place in this Country. Grateful for swift response of @SecretService, @FBI & local law enforcement. Those responsible will be brought to justice.

In an anemic response to a national emergency, President Trump responded to the crisis by simply re-tweeting Pence’s tweet with the comment:

    I agree wholeheartedly! https://t.co/ndzu0A30vU

    — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) October 24, 2018

    I agree wholeheartedly!

While little is known about the terrorist(s) responsible for this attack on leading Democrats and others, many are certain that the attack is motivated by the vitriolic and destructive rhetoric or President Trump, who often attacks and smears Obama, the Clintons, CNN and others.

In fact, Twitter has dubbed the domestic terrorist(s) behind the bombing attempts “The MAGA bomber” and using the hashtag #MAGAbomber. For example:

BREAKING: Conclusive evidence surfaces that the MAGA bomber is indeed a Trump supporter, due to misspelling the last name of @JohnBrennan pic.twitter.com/VnkTSnhy3L
    — God (@TheGoodGodAbove) October 24, 2018

We’re calling this person the Magabomber. Pass it on.

    Then vote.

    — Bess Kalb (@bessbell) October 24, 2018

It’s despicable that certain Right wing personalities on Fox News, are pushing the idea that Democrats could be behind the bombs sent to the Clintons and others. #bombscare #MAGABomber

    — Ed Krassenstein (@EdKrassen) October 24, 2018

The MAGA Bomber is a direct result of Trump encouraging domestic terrorism against his political rivals.

    — spooky anti fascist mob (@missmayn) October 24, 2018

“There are some very fine people on both sides of sending and receiving bombs in the mail.” #magabomber

    — Mrs. Betty Bowers (@BettyBowers) October 24, 2018

Bottom line: A domestic terrorist or terrorists dubbed The MAGA Bomber is sending explosive devices to people and organizations that Donald Trump has condemned and targeted for abuse as president of the United States.
    And so it goes.
