    Qantas grounds all flights

    Qantas grounds all flights

    October 29, 2011

Qantas will lock out all its employees covered by the agreements that are currently in dispute.

And it has grounded its entire domestic and international fleets indefinitely.

‘‘We are locking out until the unions withdraw their extreme claim and reach agreement with us,’’ Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce told a press conference today.

"This course of action has been forced upon us ... by the actions of three unions," Mr Joyce said.

"The ball is in their court.

"They have to decide how badly they want to hurt Qantas.

"We will provide full refunds to those who choose to cancel their flights."

Mr Joyce said his hand had been tipped by the impossible demands of the three unions.

‘‘They are trashing our strategy and our brand,’’ he said.

‘‘They are deliberately destabilising the company and there is no end in sight.’’

If the industrial action continued, Qantas would have no choice but to shut down its business ‘‘part by part’’, the chief executive said.

He believed the lock out and grounding of the fleet was the only effective avenue at his disposal to bring about a solution to the dispute.

Mr Joyce said he was sorry the course of action had become necessary but the ball was now in the unions’ court.

‘‘They must decide just how badly they want to hurt Qantas, their members ... and the travelling public,’’ he said.

The airline will offer hotel accommodation and alternative flights to those who are mid-journey and cannot get home when the grounding takes effect.

There will be refunds and ticket transfers available to passengers whose flights are cancelled.

Qantas will keep passengers updated on the situation via its website, Facebook page and Twitter.

The lockout will begin at 8pm AEDT on Monday.

Listening to the Chief Exec, it is almost a mirror of the BA strike. Not just asking for outrageous pay increases, but demanding a say in how the airline is run.

In BA's case, this led to things like salad dodging cabin crew getting extra nights off in a luxury hotel after certain delays, while the pilots were still legal and willing to fly - and passengers being stranded unnecessarily.

    Let's hope Qantas crush them.

    STAFF TRAVEL NOTICES
    29 October 2011

In response to the damaging industrial action by the Australian Licenced Aircraft Engineers Association (ALAEA), the Australian International Pilots Association (AIPA) and the Transport Workers Union (TWU) and their members, Qantas and Q Catering will lock out employees working in Australia to be covered by the proposed new agreements being negotiated by these unions.
This lockout does not commence until 8pm (AEDT) on Monday 31 October and will continue thereafter until further notice.
    • Until the lockout commences, all employees will be required at work and will be paid as per normal operations.
As a precautionary measure, we will ground the entire domestic and international Qantas fleet from 5pm (AEDT) on Saturday 29 October. QantasLink, Jetstar, Jetconnect, Cobham, Express Freighters Australia and Atlas Freighters will continue to operate as per normal.
    • Once the lockout commences, those employees who are locked out will not be required at work and they will not be paid.
This is a difficult and painful decision and one that has not been made lightly. But we regard the lockout as a necessary response to the industrial action organised by the unions and their members. It is the only form of protected industrial action available to us as an employer and we are doing this to reach a resolution.

Qantas holding country to ransom: pilots
    October 29, 2011

Pilots have accused Qantas of "holding the country to ransom" with its decision to ground all its planes over a long-running industrial dispute.

Qantas today grounded both its domestic and international fleets indefinitely and announced a lockout of engineers, pilots and other employees beginning on Monday night.

The move comes as a result of a long-running industrial impasse between Qantas and three unions: the Australian and International Pilots Association (AIPA), the Transport Workers Union (TWU) and the Australian Licensed Aircraft Engineers Association (ALAEA).

AIPA President Barry Jackson says Qantas' move is extraordinary.

"It's really holding the country to ransom and as people have said it forces the government to take action," Mr Jackson told ABC News 24.

Mr Jackson expressed doubts about the legality of the carrier's actions.

"As far as being legally able to do this I'm not completely sure the company can legally do it but they've done it," he said.

"I daresay we will have discussions across the weekend on this."

The AIPA represents more than 2,500 Qantas pilots domestically and internationally.

Fair Work yet to get hearing application
    October 29, 2011

Fair Work Australia is yet to receive an application for an urgent hearing in Qantas' decision to ground its entire domestic and international fleet.

A spokesman for the industrial umpire said on Saturday night there had been no application at this stage, but a hearing could be held as early as Sunday under Fair Work's procedures if requested.

Federal Transport Minister Anthony Albanese said earlier on Saturday the federal government would apply to Fair Work Australia to make a determination on the stand-off at Qantas.

"The government is extremely concerned about the future of Qantas its workforce but also the travelling public," Mr Albanese told reporters.

"The government was informed by Qantas of their decision mid-afternoon and the government will be making an application to Fair Work Australia to determine all industrial action at Qantas.

"This will be aimed at both actions by the unions and Qantas management."
Mr Albanese urged both sides to settle their differences.

"I would hope that the parties to the dispute act like adults and acknowledge that there's a common interest here between Qantas management and its employees."

A taskforce is being established to help travellers who are affected by the groundings, Mr Albanese said.

Jetstar, Qantaslink and Jetconnect are not affected by the grounding.

Qantas will lock out all employees who will be covered by the new ALAEA, TWU and AIPA agreements from 8pm on Monday.

The section of the Fair Work Act under which the government is making its application would enable Fair Work Australia to issue an order to suspend or terminate industrial action if it is satisfied that the action would threaten "personal safety, or the health, or welfare, of the population ... or cause significant damage to the Australian economy".

Under the section, the application must be determined within five days.
If FWA is unable to determine the application in that time it must make an interim order until the application can be determined.

    Qantas has militant management: Xenophon
    Sat Oct 29 2011

Independent Senator Nick Xenophon has accused Qantas of "militant management" over its decision to ground all its planes over a long-running industrial dispute.

Qantas on Saturday grounded its entire domestic and international fleets indefinitely and announced a lockout of engineers, pilots and other employees beginning on Monday night.

"In the past we have seen militant unionism, now we are seeing militant management," Senator Xenophon said in a statement.

"Alan Joyce doesn't need any help trashing Qantas' brand.

"He's done a pretty good job so far and this bizarre move appears to be the next phase in a plan to gut the flying kangaroo."

Virgin Australia responds to Qantas grounding; looking to bring in foreign aircraft domestically
    29th October, 2011

Virgin Australia has quickly responded to the grounding of Qantas' mainline domestic and long-haul flights that went into affect at 5pm on 29-Oct-2011 in a bold move to make three of Qantas' unions settle ongoing wage and job security disputes.

In a nearly globally unprecedented occurrence, Virgin Australia is liaising with the Australian government to allow its alliance partners – Air New Zealand, Delta, Etihad and Singapore Airlines – to operate their foreign-registered aircraft domestically in Australia to help clear the impending backlog of Qantas customers. Qantas says it carrier 68,000 domestic and international passengers a day.

Virgin Australia will set up compassionate fares for Qantas travellers, which can be purchased on the airline's website. At airports a dedicated centre to help assist passengers will be set up.

The carrier reports its off-duty staff are calling in to ask if they can help with the situation.

Virgin Australia is in the midst of a brand and product transformation that will see the carrier become a full-service airline in direct competition to Qantas. Ongoing industrial action at Qantas may provide a huge and lasting boost in high-yielding corporate clientele. Virgin wants to increase its share of the Australian corporate market from 10% to 20%.

The CHOGM taskforce says it is discussing alternative transport options with a number of delegations.
Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd was due to leave Perth on a Qantas flight this afternoon but has returned to the city, while Prime Minister Julia Gillard is due to leave Perth tomorrow on her private plane.
The Queen has already left Australia, boarding a British Airways jet in Perth for an 18-hour flight home.

URGENT BULLETIN TO AWU MEMBERS AT QANTAS
    29 October 2011

The Australian Workers' Union is as shocked as the travelling public by this extraordinary and unprecendented act by Qantas.

Words can't express our anger at the unilateral decision Qantas management has taken – as well as the impact it will have on all Qantas workers and the thousands of travellers now left stranded in Australia and around the world.

Unions rightly give 72 hours notice before industrial action, but Qantas management has given no notice before this wildcat grounding of their fleet.

Make no mistake: this is an ambush on the Australian people.

We deal with large corporations day in and day out, and one thing we know is that they don't make decisions like this on the spot.

I've already told Qantas that we believe their action is irresponsible, unnecessary and endangering future viability of airline.

At no stage did Qantas request for the Government to intervene – nor use many of the other provisions under the Fair Work Act which could have resolved this dispute earlier.

Let me be clear: the AWU will not stand by and allow our members at Qantas to be unfairly impacted by this decision.

We understand that at this stage, the lockout does not begin until 8pm, Monday 31 October 2011.

Members should also be aware that the Federal Government has now applied to Fair Work Australia to suspend the lockout – we should know the outcome of this application within the next few hours.

The AWU leadership will meet tomorrow morning, the ACTU leadership is meeting this evening and we will notify members of next steps by 11am tomorrow, Sunday 30 October 2011.

We have attached correspondence received by the union from Qantas at 5:15pm today for your reference.

Further information will be provided to members and delegates from their Branch Organiser over the next day.

In the meantime, for urgent matters, AWU members at Qantas should contact National Organiser Daniel Walton on 0413 232 018.

    Yours in Unity,

    Paul Howes

Industrial umpire to hold Qantas hearing tonight

    Updated October 29, 2011 19:59:25
Related Story: Qantas grounds entire fleet
    Map: Australia

Fair Work Australia will hold an urgent hearing tonight in Melbourne to deal with the Qantas dispute.
Qantas has grounded its entire fleet and is locking out its staff in response to industrial action by three unions.
The airline has grounded its 108 aircraft around the world indefinitely.
The Federal Government wants the industrial umpire to intervene.
The section of the Fair Work Act under which the Government is making its application would enable Fair Work Australia to issue an order to suspend or terminate industrial action if it is satisfied the action would threaten "personal safety, or the health, or welfare, of the population ... or cause significant damage to the Australian economy".
The Federal Government was told about the Qantas move just three hours before the grounding.
Transport Minister Anthony Albanese says it is extraordinary action for Qantas to take just one day after its AGM.

What is the Qantas dispute all about?

    Posted October 29, 2011 2037
    Map: Australia

Qantas has announced the immediate grounding of its entire fleet as a long-running industrial dispute with employees, including pilots and engineers, comes to a head.
Here are some facts about the stand-off:
    • Industrial action by three unions, representing engineers, baggage and catering staff and long-haul pilots, has been ongoing for several months over pay and conditions.
    • Qantas says that the strike action had until Saturday resulted in 70,000 passengers being affected, more than 600 flights cancelled and seven aircraft grounded.
    • The fleet grounding will impact 108 planes at 22 airports, domestically and internationally.
    • The dispute has cost the airline about $70 million in damages so far, with costs mounting at $15 million each week. Grounding the entire fleet will cost $20 million a day.
    • In July Qantas pilots on international routes began their first industrial action in 45 years with unauthorised in-flight announcements telling passengers about their dispute. Rolling strikes by engineers also began delaying thousands of passengers.
    • In August Qantas announced a restructure which will see 1,000 jobs slashed as part of a new emphasis on Asia, a move met with a firestorm of criticism from unions.
    • Later that month Qantas announced it had more than doubled its full-year net profit to $250 million but warned of challenging times ahead as it revamps its loss-making international arm.
    • In October Prime Minister Julia Gillard urged unions and Qantas to sort out their differences.
    • The airline flies to 208 destinations in 46 countries, operating more than 5,700 flights a week across all its brands domestically and more than 970 international flights. It moved 44.5 million passengers in the year ended June 2011.

Qantas always wanted this dispute: TWU
    Sat Oct 29 2011

Qantas management never wanted to resolve its dispute with employees and no amount of chaos will deter them from sending jobs offshore, the Transport Workers Union (TWU) says.

The union said on Saturday the airline's indefinite grounding of its entire domestic and international fleets and lockout of employees was designed to destroy it.

"Today's unwarranted and disgraceful snap announcement by Qantas CEO Alan Joyce is designed to destroy Qantas as we have always known it,"TWU national secretary Tony Sheldon said in a statement.

"No amount of chaos will cause Qantas senior management to deviate from their ambition to outsource Australian jobs to Asia and detonate the Qantas brand.

"It is clear that Mr Joyce is unfit to lead this great Australian company.

"He should take his $5 million package and leave the airline in capable hands, not those of someone who has seen share value halve and provided no dividend to shareholders for over two years."

Mr Sheldon said the TWU said it has taken a total of six hours industrial action in over eight months' negotiations.

"Qantas has only issued an ultimatum that workers agree to it without even having the chance to look at it," he said.

"Make no mistake, Qantas has always wanted this dispute.

"They trained strike-breakers nine months ago to do the work of TWU members. They have never wanted to resolve their employees' claims, never."

He said the union's claims have been aimed at gaining job security for the next enterprise bargaining agreement and a negotiable pay rise.

Mr Joyce had not bothered telling his shareholders about his decision at Qantas's annual general meeting on Friday, he said.

"Why did he not advise shareholders of his plan to ruin the airline and wreck employee relations for years to come," Mr Sheldon said.

"These are the actions of a hard-line ideological board built around a chair that still yearns for the workplace-busting days when he could roll out AWAs (Australian Workplace Agreements) at will.

"He wants to re-inflict them on workers under a Tony Abbott-led anti-employee government.

"Qantas management has totally lost touch with their employees.

"Their massive pay rises have sailed through, but the requests for certainty for three years on job security have been dismissed with lies."

Mr Sheldon said the airline is in breach of the Qantas Sale Act, which has a national responsibility to the Australian community, content, and workforce.

He called on the federal government to intervene.
