A community centre equally open to all faiths and races, that provides low cost child care, dining, meeting, and sporting facilities to an inner city community and does not contain a Mosque or any other consecrated place of worship, is hardly showing total disrespect to anyone. :rolleyes:Quote:

Hey, it's a shame the daycare facilities are not up and running- the current protesters on Wall St could sure make use of them, to keep their kids out of harms way. :)
Will men and women be able to use the gym and swimming pool at the same time? Will there be a religious dress code imposed on non-Muslims?
Time will tell pretty quickly how moderate this group really is.
YesQuote:

Hopefully you are correct, but strict Muslim men aren't going to want to share the pool with women of any religion.
Neither orthodox Jewish men. So they won't swim there, obviously.Quote:

To me it seems incongruous to build an Islamic center that will have facilities that will be unusable by strict adherents of Islam.
It is not an Islamic centre- but strict adherents of Islam will, like strict adherents of Judaism, or Santi Asoke, or Veganism, or Queens pawn chess openings, be able to rent one of various sized conference rooms and talk to each other if they so wish.Quote:

Share the Muslim-American experience , promote integration, & dispel misconceptions
In the United States today, there is no identifiable platform that integrates the best that Islam and Muslims have to offer and at the same time invites our neighbors to participate in the Muslim experience. Park51 recognizes this need but also understands that there are specific challenges in undertaking such a task. There is an increase in Islamophobia in America leading to dangerous assumptions about the suitability of Islam – and thus Muslims – in America. This can only be addressed through exemplary constructive engagement from the Muslim-American side, based on the principles of promoting integration and preserving our fundamental freedoms.

I can see they're trying to be tolerant and accepting of other religions, but Islam is obviously their focus.
Yeah, and?Quote:

I didn't say it did (see post #14)- what bothers me is tip-toeing around the subject and not calling the place what it is- are you saying this isn't an 'Islamic center'?
Sabang is carrying on saying it's not a mosque, when in fact a mosque is being built by the same people right next door (though they claim it isn't 'affiliated' it has the same developers and owners)- this is the link that is attached to the Park51 website where the Park51 people call it a mosque on the text of the YouTube link:

Just a case of taqiyya.

Islam is evil.
^ you're joking.
^ Then again, an Egyptian Muslim I knew, once said to me that Muslims are hypocrites.
I'm saying I don't care what they call it as long as they don't bother anyone with their superstitious nonsense.Quote:

Egyptians don't like Arabs much, even if they are Muslim.
They're far more moderate and tolerant of Christians and Jews than most other Islamic states.
I met some Muslims from Timbuktu a couple of years ago, in a night club (of all places) in Dubai. Ended up being invited to stay with them in Timbuktu.
I'd love to spend time there.
It is a major Islamic university city, with some amazing architecture and a very ancient history.
It also has a strong Jewish community there, and upholds religious freedom.
^ Agreed.
The Coptic Church has taken a battering lately.
Timbuktu in Mali is probably the most tolerant of all Islamic communities.
During Saddam Hussein's time, Iraq had quite a strong Jewish community, co-existing
well with Islam.
The last count I read, only a few hundred are left, and the locals didn't want them to leave, but things got worse for them after USA "liberated" the place.
^^ Noam Chomski is always worth listening to, a brilliant mind.
