Violence in north Kosovo draws EU warning

By Fatos Bytyci and Aleksandar Vasovic

    updated 7/27/2011 9:51:50 PM ET

Kosovo, which has a 90 percent ethnic Albanian majority, sent special police units on Monday to take control of northern border crossings and enforce a ban on imports from Serbia -- retaliation for its block on Kosovo's exports.

Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in 2008 but Belgrade does not recognize the move and the 60,000 Serbs who live in northern Kosovo still consider Belgrade their capital.

One Kosovo police officer was shot in the head and died on Tuesday in a clash with local Serbs. On Wednesday, armed Serbs attacked and burned down the Jarinje border post and fired at members of NATO's KFOR peacekeeping force.

"It was confirmed that an act of arson was committed against that position... There have also been confirmed reports of shots fired at KFOR personnel in the vicinity," KFOR said in a statement.

It did not say whether anyone was injured in the attack or whether KFOR troops had returned fire, but said reinforcements had been sent to the border.

Kosovo's Prime Minister Hashim Thaci accused Belgrade of masterminding the violence. "We will not withdraw, there will be no return under any circumstances and at any price," he said.

He said Serbia was trying to carve out a piece of northern Kosovo, but this "will never happen."

Serbia's pro-European President Boris Tadic urged Kosovo Serbs to refrain from violence. "The hooligans who are sparking violence are not defending either the people or the Serb state," his office said in a statement.

    "RESTORE CALM IMMEDIATELY"

EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said she spoke on Tuesday with Thaci and Tadic, urging them to restore calm immediately with a warning that violence would not be tolerated.

"I strongly condemn the violence that has taken place in northern Kosovo. These latest developments are unacceptable," she said in a statement.

"It is the responsibility of both Belgrade and Pristina to immediately defuse the tensions, and restore calm and security for everyone."

Belgrade wants to join the EU, but it must mend its ties with Kosovo to speed up its bid to join the bloc. Pristina and Belgrade have started EU-moderated talks aimed at improving trade, movement of people and issues like energy supplies, but negotiations have moved slowly.

Kosovo's police raids on Monday and Tuesday drew criticism from both the United States as the EU, which said the government should have consulted its Western backers.

A Serb eyewitness said on Wednesday that a group of masked men armed with wooden planks, axes and crowbars attacked and burned the Jarinje border post, which consisted of two-storey prefabricated buildings and a roofed passageway for cars.

"Later a bulldozer was brought to demolish the burned buildings," he said.

A cameraman and a sound engineer of Serbia's state-run Tanjug news agency were attacked by Serb hardline nationalists near Jarinje and seriously injured, the agency said.

In a separate incident earlier on Wednesday, an unidentified gunman fired shots at a NATO helicopter, a NATO spokesman said, but there were no injuries.

The U.N. Security Council accepted a Serbian request for an urgent meeting on tensions in Kosovo after Serbia sent a letter to the 15-nation council requesting an open meeting.

The call was supported by Serbia's ally Russia, which like Belgrade has refused to recognize Kosovo's February 2008 declaration of independence from Serbia.

The council opted for a compromise and scheduled closed-door consultations on Kosovo on Thursday, rather than a public meeting, the diplomats told Reuters on condition of anonymity.

Serbia lost its former province of Kosovo in 1999, when NATO waged a bombing campaign to stop Yugoslav leader Slobodan Milosevic from killing ethnic Albanians and carrying out ethnic cleansing in a counter-insurgency war.
"Slavery is the daughter of darkness; an ignorant people is the blind instrument of its own destruction; ambition and intrigue take advantage of the credulity and inexperience of men who have no political, economic or civil knowledge. They mistake pure illusion for reality, license for freedom, treason for patriotism, vengeance for justice."-Simón Bolívar

Ethnic tensions lead to deadly flare-up of violence in Kosovo

    Reuters
Masked Serb extremists set the Serbia-Kosovo border crossing on fire in Jarinje on July 27. Ethnic Serbs set fire to a border crossing post in northern Kosovo on Wednesday after Kosovo's government said it had regained control of that station and one other, officials said. Oliver Ivanovic, Serbia's state secretary for Kosovo, said no one was hurt, but voiced concern about further violence.

Dramatic video: Serbs attack, set Kosovo border post on fire

Uploaded by RussiaToday on Jul 28, 2011

NATO-led international peacekeepers, KFOR, strengthen control of the two checkpoints in northern Kosovo following the clash between local Serbs and Kosovo special police. The UN Security Council is to discuss the situation on Thursday. KFOR forces have been deployed to the area to try and ease tensions after a mob of angry Serbs threw petrol bombs and set fire to a customs post on Kosovo's northernmost border with Serbia in Jarinje, a few hours after Kosovo's police withdrew from the area. NATO forces had to fire at a Serb mob in order to bring the situation under control, AP reports. There have been no reports of casualties.

    This will help Putin.

Serbia's President has called on NATO to "do their job" in Kosovo, warning if it doesn't that Serbia itself will move to protect its minority in the breakaway province.
    Key points:

    • President Aleksandar Vucic's comments follow the collapse of EU-mediated talks between Serbian and Kosovo leaders earlier this week
    • A NATO-led intervention in 1999 ended the war between Serbian forces and Kosovo separatists, stopping Belgrade's bloody crackdown against Kosovo's majority Albanians
    • There are fears that Russia could encourage Serbia into an armed conflict in northern Kosovo to shift focus away from Russia's invasion of Ukraine

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic made the statement In a fiery televised address to his nation that followed the collapse of political talks between Serbian and Kosovo leaders earlier this week in Brussels.
Serbia, along with its allies Russia and China, has refused to recognise Kosovo's 2008 declaration of independence.
A NATO-led intervention in 1999 ended the war between Serbian forces and separatists in Kosovo and stopped Belgrade's bloody crackdown against Kosovo's majority Albanians.
The EU has overseen years of unsuccessful talks to normalise their ties, saying that's one of the main preconditions for Kosovo and Serbia's eventual membership in the 27-nation bloc.
"We have nowhere to go, we are cornered," Mr Vucic said.
"We will save our people from persecution and pogroms, if NATO does not want to do it."
He also claimed that Kosovo Albanian "gangs" need to be stopped from crossing into northern Kosovo, where most Kosovo Serbs live. Mr Vucic offered no proof of the claim.
There are some fears amongst Western nations that Russia could encourage its ally Serbia into an armed intervention in northern Kosovo that would further destabilise the Balkans and shift at least some world and NATO attention from Russia's war in Ukraine.
Nearly 4,000 NATO-led peacekeepers have been stationed in Kosovo following the 1998-99 war and any armed intervention there by Serbia or Russia would mean a major escalation of a simmering conflict in Europe.
Following the collapse of the EU-mediated talks, NATO peacekeeping troops in Kosovo have been deployed at main roads in its north, saying they are ready to protect the freedom of movement for all sides.

Tensions between Serbia and Kosovo soared anew last month when the Kosovo government led by Prime Minister Albin Kurti declared that Serbian identity documents and vehicle license plates would no longer be valid in Kosovo's territory.
Serbia has been implementing the same measures for Kosovo citizens crossing into Serbia for the past 10 years.
Minority Serbs in Kosovo reacted with anger to the proposed changes, putting up roadblocks, sounding air raid sirens and firing guns into the air and in the direction of Kosovo police officers. No one was injured.
Under apparent pressure from the West, Mr Kurti postponed implementation of the measure for a month to September 1, when more trouble is expected if a compromise is not reached by then.
Mr Vucic said Serbia will "work hard" to reach a "compromise solution in the next 10 days" and accused the Kosovo leadership of "only being interested in abolishing any trace of the Serbian state in Kosovo".
Mr Vucic also claimed, again without proof, that Kosovo's government wanted "the final removal of the Serbian people from Kosovo" — something that has been repeatedly denied by Kosovo officials.
Kosovo Interior Minister Xhelal Svecla on Sunday visited Kosovo police units stationed near the northern border with Serbia, saying that he hopes there will be no trouble when the new measures begin.
“Our common interest here is that this land is ours and we will not give it up at any price,” he said

Serbia call the country Kosovo. Albanians call the country Kosova and call themselves Shqiptarët e Kosovës meaning Albanians of Kosova.

Did you consider sending a letter to NBC to protest the Serbian spelling?

No, quite happy to let the dumb Serbs stew in frustration when they realise that NBC is not an official agency and thus the spelling is not recognition but just a mistake instead.

What did Serbian tennis superstar Novak Djokovic say about the Kosovo protests?

Novak Djokovic has stirred anger after calling for peace in northern Kosovo after winning his first match at the French Open.
Here's a breakdown of what he said and what it has to do with the unrest in the sovereign European state.
    What did Novak Djokovic say?

After winning his match, Djokovic signed the camera for a Serbian television network.
This isn't unusual — winning players regularly sign television cameras after winning their matches.
However, instead of just signing his name on the screen, Djokovic wrote "Kosovo is the heart of Serbia. Stop the violence," in Serbian.
Djokovic explained his decision to write the message to Serbian media in a press conference after the game.
"Kosovo is our hearth, stronghold, centre of the most important events for our country," he said in Serbian.
"The biggest battle happened there, the most important monasteries are there.
"There are many reasons why I wrote it on the camera."
Djokovic later reposted an image of his signed message on his Instagram account.

What is your point ? Kosovo was illegally carved out of Serbia. Not even all the Nato countries recognize Kosovo as an independent state.

NATO to send an extra 700 troops to Kosovo amid rising tensions with ethnic Serbs

An additional 700 NATO troops will be sent to northern Kosovo to help quell violent protests after clashes with ethnic Serbs there left 30 international soldiers wounded.
    Key points:

    • The announcement comes a day after 30 NATO soldiers were hurt in clashes
    • Unrest has intensified since ethnic Albanian mayors took office in northern Kosovo's Serb-majority area
    • Mr Stoltenberg condemned the violence, urging both sides to take steps to de-escalate the unrest

"We have decided to deploy 700 more troops from the operational reserve force for Western Balkans," NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg told reporters in Oslo.
He said NATO would also "put an additional battalion of reserve forces on high readiness so they can also be deployed if needed. These are prudent steps".
A battalion typically ranges from 300 to around 1,000 troops.
The NATO-led peacekeeping mission, KFOR, currently consists of almost 3,800 troops.

the list I read said 101.

but your number of 95 is disingenuous because the there are multiple levels of not yet recognize.

    recognize,
    will recognize in the future
    urge further talks/negotiation
    do not recognize.
    no official position

And to say the UN does not recognize is wrong. The UNSCR 1244 recognizes the need for Serbia to withdraw from Kosova, have the UNFOR protect Albanians and allow Kosova to set up domestic governance.

Basically some Kosovan municipal politicians held some sham election in a part of Serbia that had 3% participation. And then they are carrying it out as if it was legitimate. And the Serbs are protesting it obviously.

    OK

Still 5 EU members do not.

Because of the crime -ridden shithole Kosovo is.

Crime is more or less the only thing the kosovars are deciding on and probably interested in.

I don't think that anyone would like them to join the EU.

Unless ofcourse USA say that we must
