‘Fraser Island’ to be dropped in favour of Indigenous name K’gari

‘Fraser Island’ to be dropped in favour of Indigenous name K’gari under Queensland proposal

World’s largest sand island to revert to its original name, meaning ‘paradise’ in the Butchulla language

    • It’s hoped Fraser Island will follow the lead of Uluru and only be known by its Indigenous name, as the Queensland government flags an official name change.

The proposal will take a step forward this week as two months of public consultation begin, the state’s resources minister, Scott Stewart, said on Wednesday.

He hopes the process will lead to the Indigenous name of K’gari entering the common vernacular in the same way Uluru has replaced Ayers Rock.
“No one calls it Ayers Rock any more, they call it Uluru, and it’s about respecting our First Nations people, and about respecting the connection they have with this land,” Stewart said.
“(For) 60,000 years they’ve been calling it K’gari; I think it’s about time we started to do exactly the same.”

The reinstatement of K’gari as the island’s name has been a long time coming, the chair of the Butchulla Aboriginal Corporation, aunty Gayle Minniecon, said.
“It means so much to the Butchulla people,” she said.
“For us it’s about respect for our people. It’s important for us to let our ancestors know that our culture is still strong and we continue to care for our country.”
The consultation follows the island’s world heritage area being renamed K’gari last year, environment minister Meaghan Scanlon said
“K’gari means paradise in the Butchulla language and as a popular destination for its natural beauty, is a much more fitting name for such an iconic place,” Scanlon said.
“The name Fraser Island is culturally inappropriate - it is a tribute to Eliza Fraser, a woman whose narrative directly led to the massacre and dispossession of the Butchulla people.”
K’gari was originally known by Europeans as Great Sandy Island before it was changed to Fraser Island after Scotswoman Eliza Fraser was shipwrecked there in 1836.

This article is 9 months old but the official name change occurred today. No doubt come will cry wokeism, but the majority think this is the right thing to do.

Not going to delve into the politics of the name change, but we have a lot of those name changes here in my state. That said, if you want to see how amazingly beautiful Fraser is, this American guy who I have actually met does a marathon camping stream from there on twitch once a year. He lives in an amazing house close to the island with killer sunsets...

Or Magnetic Island a short boat ride off Townsville

If you like tourists the Whitsundays are also ok

I prefer Scotland Island an easy trip from Avalon and the delights of Manly, I may be prejudiced I met a lovely local called Moaner Veil

Yet others prefer Rotnest, Griffiths Island near Port Fairy

Went skydiving over Magnetic Island aged 21-ish, remember thinking 'Wot lucky fookers get to live here'. The memories of a week stopping off in Townsville are starting to come back. None of which are pretty. I seem to remember a stack of free drink vouchers and an English mate that started his porn career there with a national soft-porn mag. The name escapes me.

Got to know an arrogant tosser of a murderer/hotelier from there quite well, was around 12 into a 25 stretch (him, not me), originally got around 12 years but then appealed it and they doubled it to 25, an Asian bloke broke in and killed his wife next to him in bed irrc, that he set up (or didn't), Andrew (weird Eastern European name) Kaladzich or something. Owned the Manly Something Hotel.

Fok I miss Australia. Or whatever they're calling it nowadays.

Rented a house there and went snorkling for days.

Then some fool mentioned sharks and I spent the rest of my time there watching videos in the house and Benson and Hedges Cricket in the Pub.

    Burp.

Humid and hot there (and weak beer)

    Maybe Boomerangia or Didgeridoonia?
Seeing as 25% of kiwis live here maybe Western Aeteoroa.

I am an alumnus of Nelly Bay State School on Magnetic Island, as I believe Julian Assange was much later on.
It was a one teacher one room school when I started my education journey there, but unfortunately the alcoholic prick saw fit to expel me and my two brothers on the same day. But that's another story and I continued at Central State School at North Ward in Townsville.

It was a long time since I was there and we were the only bogans in a 4WD. Didn’t see another person after we left the ferry.

I did go to Magnetic Island but thought Fraser more amazing.

I've been in some pretty feral places in Victoria, WA and NSW but the bars of Townsville were at an other level they were like auditions for Mad Max felt completely at home like Belfast or Glasgow where all pretence lost in the guzzlingo

I was a student at Central when the school was moved to the old jail site - can't remember the year but mid 50s? My bro went to Townsville Grammar, black and yellow hatband if I remember correctly. Was the school in Charlie's All Souls? I recall my Dad saying it would have been cheaper just to put a fence around the town when the lunatic asylum was built there.
