SlutWalk protesters stop Melbourne traffic
May 28, 2011
Protesters reveal their messages along the streets of Melbourne
- "Slutwalk" protests in Melbourne
- Cold weather forced women to cover up
- Organisers "reclaiming the word slut"
THE global "slutwalk" phenomenon arrived in Australia today, with hundreds of protesters stopping Melbourne CBD traffic to end of the culture of victim-blaming in sexual assaults.
Grey skies kept most protesters rugged up, but a brave handful donned fishnets and heels, hot pants or minikirts for the march from the State Library, along Swanston St and up Collins St.
Many onlookers were bemused, some clapped in support and most captured the protest on their phones.
Organiser Clem Bastow told the crowd - which included a balance of men - that they were reclaiming the word "slut" and rejecting the ideals of humiliation, spite and judgment loaded on the term.
Australian Lauren Clair, one of the organisers of the Melbourne event, said about 2,500 people showed up to march through the city's streets.
"I think that's because it's a global issue, it's not just something that happens in Canada; it's something we see in our society every day of our lives,'' Clair, 27, said.
Women show their support by holding placecards
While women were often judged on how they dressed, it was wrong to suggest that only those who wore provocative clothes were the victims of sexual assault, she added.
"It's a big myth that women can protect themselves against sexual assault and rape by dressing modestly,'' she said.
Clair said the majority of marchers chanting slogans such as "However we dress, wherever we go, yes means yes and no means no'' were women, but there were all genders in the crowd.
"Yes, there was anger and frustration that we still live in a culture where this is permitted,'' she said, adding there was also joy, and a sense of empowerment.
SlutWalks have already spread to the United States, and thousands registered for events in Australia after notices were posted on Facebook earlier this month.
Prior to the Melbourne event, Clair had said she was keen to reclaim the word "slut'' as a source of pride, not shame.
"I've spent my entire life being judged for my appearance and sexuality. I'm sexual, I have sex, I enjoy sex. I'm not going to be ashamed,'' she told Fairfax newspapers.
SlutWalks in Sydney and Adelaide are planned for next month.

A sign that says "Avoid rape, dress appropriately" Don't think these two have much to worry about regardless of how they dress......and they are not the worst by a long shot....
Some of those girls really look like they've enjoyed any excuse to dress like hookers and write the word "slut" on themselves.
Looks like they're going for an audition with Max Hardcore, tbh. "Toronto Bukkake. vol 7" anyone?
....well they never transported the good looking bitches...
they were all tucked up nice and tight in the Lords bed....
only slags....that became she-lags...who became sheilas...
....some Aussie fools even name their female babies....sheila...

Slutwalk London: 'Yes means yes and no means no'
Men in hard hats paused from digging up Piccadilly to watch in stunned silence as the provocative procession marched past.
They would not have dared to wolf whistle as women in stockings, bras and basques passed, clutching banners with statements like "cleavage is not consent".
The women were among the up to 5,000 people organisers say took part in the UK's latest Slutwalk in London on Saturday.
Slut walk covers up

There will be no fishnet stockings and hot pants at the ‘slut walk’ in the Capital. Delhi women will, instead, cover up for the anti-sexual harassment campaign, in a deviation from what their international counterparts wore.
The organisers are asking girls to wear ‘sensible’ clothes to the ev ent, now scheduled to take place on July 24 in Connaught Place. It was initially scheduled for June 25.
While the recent ‘slut walk’ in Toronto saw girls come out in garish makeup and short skirts, the organiser of the Delhi edition, Umang Sabarwal, 19, says, “Girls can wear whatever they want, because the point we’re trying to make is that it is not the clothes (that cause harassment).
Preetika Nanda, 20, the co-organiser, adds, “Here, our struggle does not start when we step out in revealing clothes, it starts right from the time we’re born. Girls get molested in salwar kameez, too.”
Participants are happy. “I will go for the walk in a kurta and jeans. I have never felt that we attract attention only when we are dressed in a skirt. Girls get picked up on their way back from office,” says Ahana Choudhry, 23.
The dress code has also found support from actor Gul Panag, who will be a part of the event. “Women here get raped when they wear saris and suits. So, there’s no need to wear skimpy clothes.” She adds, “Here, whenever a sexual crime happens, the CM, judiciary, police put the blame on the woman — why was she out so late? Why was she dressed this way? So when the state abdicates its responsibility, the next step is to arm yourselves.”
The police are braced to counter any harassment during the walk. “We will provide the adequate security and support when approached,” says Additional CP (New Delhi), KC Dwivedi.
Yay, go sluts.
Nightmarish.
Fek me.
This whole thing (the Indian issue aside) just goes to show how thick women are.
