Chaotic court appearance for accused axe murderer
April 8, 2011 - 10:47AM
A former South African domestic rugby union player spoke in tongues and pushed his police escort when he appeared in court over three axe murders.
Phindile Joseph Ntshongwana, who played for the Blue Bulls in the national Vodacom and Currie Cup competitions, faced Durban Magistrates Court in a chaotic appearance over an alleged two-week killing rampage, the Sapa news agency reported.
Sapa said Ntshongwana shoved police officers who took him to the dock and, clutching a Bible in his left hand, spoke loudly in tongues before being allowed to leave court.
Ntshongwana's father told the court his son had a history of psychiatric problems.
"He has a bipolar condition. His condition deteriorated yesterday and we believe that he has to see a private psychiatrist," Liston Ntshongwana, a former diplomat and businessman, said.
He said his son was on a strict medication regimen and had received counselling and treatment at a number of hospitals.
The case will resume on April 14.
