A British woman locked up in Dubai after being caught in bed with a banker told of her relief yesterday as she was released on bail.

Danielle Spencer has been languishing in custody for the past 30 days after allegedly falling foul of the Gulf state’s strict morality laws.

She had been caught spending the night with New Zealander Toby Carroll by his then girlfriend who allegedly threatened them at knifepoint. All three were arrested.
Miss Spencer, 31, a former model from Hull, was met by her mother, Angela Genter, amid tearful scenes yesterday. She said: ‘I’m just relieved it’s over. It has been a nightmare and I have been left feeling very ill. But I am so happy to be out at last.’

Miss Spencer, who secured bail in the early hours after she finally found someone to provide a passport for her surety, added: ‘I just want a big drink, a soak in a bath and a sleep in a proper bed. That will feel like bliss.’

Since her arrest last month she had been sharing a mattress in an overcrowded underground holding cell in Bur Dubai with her love rival, Priscila Ferreira, 24.

Miss Spencer said they had become friends during their ‘nightmare ordeal’.

‘All we had was each other for comfort. The conditions are terrible, so cramped, and they put tranquillisers in the food. There are no windows, no fresh air.

'We can only have a bath once a week. There are insects everywhere.’
Miss Spencer’s nightmare began after she spent the night with Mr Carroll, a £100,000-a-year HSBC property analyst, on their first date.

As the pair lay in bed in the morning in his flat, Miss Ferreira, a Brazilian model, allegedly burst in with a knife. It is claimed she slashed furniture and curtains before turning the weapon on Miss Spencer.

Miss Ferreira was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and Miss Spencer and Mr Carroll of sex outside marriage, a criminal offence in the United Arab Emirates.
Miss Spencer, who has lost her job selling yachts in Dubai, insists they did not have sex. Miss Ferreira was also freed yesterday and Mr Carroll, 32, was bailed on Thursday.

Miss Spencer said she and Miss Ferreira had bonded during their incarceration. She told The Mail on Sunday: ‘There are no hard feelings. We have laughed at the irony of it ... that she’s the safest person to be with in prison.’

No charges have been brought yet, but if Miss Spencer or Mr Carroll are charged with having sex outside marriage they could face jail. It is expected they will be brought before a prosecutor in the next few weeks.
