11% of americans say they are overweight

11 percent said they were very overweight or obese — a direct contradiction of previous weight measurements taken by researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which show that 68 percent of Americans are overweight or obese.

"There does seem to be a disconnect," between reality and the answers most of us give when asked questions about our diet, how much exercise we get and our weight, said Molly Kimball, a registered dietitian
And the survey found that the most commonly eaten vegetable was lettuce or salad greens — 78 percent of respondents said they eat a serving a week.
"We take iceberg lettuce, with 600 calories of blue cheese dressing, and call it a salad," Enos said. But such "vegetables" don't provide us with healthy nutrients.

When a nation starts collectively euphemising 'fat' as 'Big', you certainly know they're in denial.

You're not big, you're fat, Fatso. Grotesquely obese, a blimp, a lardarsed glutton. Get used to it.

Then the definition of "overweight" in America must be "more than 80 lbs over what you were meant to be". Otherwise, they're liars. Period. Fat slobs.

I've known a few porkers, but not that many really. Say 20%.
But you know exactly where the heartland of the fatland is- it's the Heartland, aka flyover country!

^ More than a guess- heavy correlation between obesity and Red states. Read it somewhere. Perversely, big correlation between obesity and low income too- no doubt color feeds in to that.

Some people are obese, and can do nowt about it- a glandular thing. The majority however is thru' choice- overeating, and eating the wrong stuff. Thats why I reject the euphemism 'big'. It's not big, it's fat- and ultimately, it's up to "you" to do something about it. Or not.

What next, will we call smack addicts 'Afghan benefactors', and cokeheads 'nasally challenged'?

Nothing more disgusting than watching one of those lard butts at a hotel free breakfast buffet. Absolutely unbelievable how they pile on on 2 or 3 plates just because it's "free" ,and it really struck my on my recent visit after having been in Asia almost 4 years. You just do not see pigs like that here.

^Hey Bob. Since you're here, how did your remote helicopter for your student go? My son broke his in 32 hours, although he did have it doing back flips in the air a couple of times before it died.

Unfortunately, the 'American' disease is spreading.

    I wonder why that is?

1- Overeating- thats the biggest one
2- Eating crap- absolutely no idea of, or care about, food combination
3- Sedentary lifestyle, lack of exercise
4- lack of knowledge and will to correct it

Rather than euphemising it with non threatening 'nom de plumes' (a losers mentality), the emphasis should be on empowering people to do something about it. Michelle is right.

And it is absolutely not just an Amerkin problem. Now stop calling it big.

I think you hit it on the head with all 4 and in that order.

I think corporate America has loads to do with all of it. Fast Food pushing the portions to the max and serving stuff I wouldn't feed to an animal. In the USA we used to have grocery stores, now we have nothing but big box Walmarts. Walmart is forcing closed so many grocery stores it is sick. Mom and Pop shops hardly exist because of this.

So here I am in a large city and the only place to buy food is one of these huge chains (because the locals have all closed down due to competition) I am there to buy cranberry juice. Eyeing up and down all the labels that say cranberry juice and out of the 40 or so bottles to choose from not one bottle is pure. All are from extract, and even the ones that say 100% juice are not honest. They are 100% Juice but not cranberry juice, it is diluted Apple & Grape Juice from China and Brazil with cranberry flavoring. Sad situation when I can not even buy the healthy things I am seeking. Sure I could go to one of the few Natural food stores and buy a liter of cranberry juice, but the good stuff is priced through the roof now. $8 for a liter of real cranberry juice, buying another bottle of the fake stuff tonight at Wal-mart, not because I want to but because I am forced to.

    He forgot 5 then.

5 - Crappy fast food is probably cheaper in America than fresh produce.

The movie Food Inc. is a good eye opener.

^ Well said. Basically proper food is what you could grow and process yourself on a small farm. Wheat and sugar don't come into the picture, pork, beef, chickens, vegetables all qualify but anything requiring industrial processing doesn't. Big business is massive wheat farms with industrial processing and should be avoided at all costs, HFCS (high fructose corn syrup) is a killer as are transfats from vegetable oil.

Unfortunately there is no money in healthy food at the corporate level and there is not sufficient food to support healthy eating worldwide, in fact , even the grains are being genetically modified and most corn now is not GM but is from a hardy mutant dwarf stock which is from selective breeding.

Not race, but location. Lots of fatties in Chitown - but when you get to Florida and California the people get a whole lot fitter. Warm weather and activities. I really have to push myself to spend 3 hours a day in the gym here in Chicago (when I am not reading Ray baby). Gloomy, cold depressing and it gets dark around say 4:30..........making it a real chore to get moving.

Access to all of the food makes it easy for Americans to get fat.. I'm not saying that this is the main excuse for the American's lardassness (if that's a word), but it certainly is one. Meals at most "fast food" restaurants are getting cheaper and cheaper, 2 <insert fattening food here> for $1, etc, while fruit and veggie prices are stagnant or go up all the while the average American is earning less and less. The places that were providing some healthy food for cheap, places like Tesco's Fresh and Easy, have closed a lot of their stores (at least in the Las Vegas / Henderson area I was in, they expended too quickly I suppose).

I recently went back home to Las Vegas for Christmas and I was shocked, living there you don't really notice all the fatties because its the norm, but when you come to visit after living in Asia for the last few years it really is amazing at the size of these people.

I'm not a small man by any means (1.87 meters, 87kg), but jfc, compared to most of my American friends and most of the people I saw waddling the streets, I'm an emaciated Thai from the moo baan.

New Obesity Data Shows Blacks Have the Highest Rates of Obesity

Blacks had 51 percent higher prevalence of obesity, and Hispanics had 21 percent higher obesity prevalence compared with whites.
Greater prevalences of obesity for blacks and whites were found in the South and Midwest than in the West and Northeast. Hispanics in the Northeast had lower obesity prevalence than Hispanics in the Midwest, South or West.
For this study analysis, CDC analyzed the 2006−2008 BRFSS data.
For more, see Differences in Prevalence of Obesity Among Black, White, and Hispanic Adults — United States, 2006–2008.

The red state correlation with obesity cannot be made if one studies the obesity rates by state.

The majority of the food industry and Big Pharma work hand-in-hand!

And as one as mention trans fats and normal fatty acids are a killer. The issue is when they are treated with high temps.
