40% of americans believe in strict creationism

    December 17, 2010

Four in 10 Americans Believe in Strict Creationism

Belief in evolutionary origins of humans slowly rising, however

    by Frank Newport

PRINCETON, NJ -- Four in 10 Americans, slightly fewer today than in years past, believe God created humans in their present form about 10,000 years ago. Thirty-eight percent believe God guided a process by which humans developed over millions of years from less advanced life forms, while 16%, up slightly from years past, believe humans developed over millions of years, without God's involvement.

I don't think the polled sample would have been evenly distributed to get a result like that.
Probably southern rural communities were polled.

Race would probably make a difference too. Blacks and hispanics tend to be religious conservatives.

"Survey Methods Results for this Gallup poll are based on telephone interviews conducted Dec. 10-12, 2010, with a random sample of 1,019 adults, aged 18 and older, living in the continental U.S., selected using random-digit-dial sampling.
For results based on the total sample of national adults, one can say with 95% confidence that the maximum margin of sampling error is ±4 percentage points"

To suggest that 52% of American Republicans actually believe that God created us in our present form within the last 10,000 seems just ridiculous. In over 30 years of interaction with them, I can't actually recall one person who seriously believed that.
They must have just surveyed one community in the rural mid-west with a population of 5000 people, an average age of 75, and 50 churches. It makes absolutely no sense otherwise.

    perhaps not.

but would 40% of belgians reply that they believe humans were created in their present form 10,000 years ago?

    somehow I don't think so.

Why does it matter? Just another reason to feel superior to the trailer trash yanks, merkins, seppos.

those stats sound a bit low, would probably be around 80% in rural areas and the southern cities and all the redneck shitholes

The same people who are intolerant of american religious nutters are the ones who ridicule americans for being intolerant of muslim religious nutters. A lot of hypocrisy IMO.

now you are showing your American bias. I think the muslism religious nutters are as bad as the American religious nutters, but I disagree with the American approach of profiling them and harassing them. Likewise, I don't agree with profiling and harassing American individuals just because they are americans, unless of course they belong to that religious group or vote Republicans

I think the only people who deal with telephone solicitors these days are absolute morons anyway (not to say that the Gallup polls don't have merit, but your odds of being able to engage me via a random call to my home- regardless of your reason for calling- are slim and none, and Slim left town...)

Having your privacy violated via the telephone is a real scourge in the States, and most people will just hang up immediately (especially if they're on the 'do not call' list).

Only mouth-breathers give random callers the time-of-day...
There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.

If you conducted the same poll in the UK. 80% would say they believe in... nothing.
The other 20% would say they believed in God but only because he was British.

    Hypocritical how?

Personally, I feel a degree of mild intolerance to all religious nutters no matter where they may come from.

The most disgusting thing about this are the American politicians who know pander and carter to these morons.

    When I see a politician making a big spectacle out of going to religious services, I'm not sure which is more frightening;
    1. Electing someone stupid enough to believe in such nonsense
    or
    2. Electing someone with so little morals and conviction as to cater to religious idiots.

There are several issues in the US that are of concern to a small percentage of the population but the feelings on these matters are so strong that they vote entirely on that subject. Guns, religion, Israel, anti-Fidel Castro, are some of them.
