The relevant legislation is actually The Human Rights Act 1998. In effect this act incorporated into UK law the already existing provisions under the European Convention on Human Rights 1953. Any Council of Europe country was expected to ratify this as soon as practicable upon accession. It is in effect a condition of membership that all countries joining the Council should do so.

Before the 1998 Act Britain's judiciary could act within the provisions of the Act if it so chose but was not necessarily bound by judgements. As a consequence adverse decisions were often challenged and taken to Strasbourg where the European Court on Human Rights would deliberate. Judgements handed down were always observed by the British Courts.

Labour simply legislated for what was in effect the status quo without the delay of having Strasbourg having to intervene.

NuLabour and Blair just did what was long overdue given our EU membership and frankly it was as inevitable as the tedious braying of the Tory blimp raised against it.

Essentially human rights are not negotiable nor alienable. Just because a man is bad doesn't mean he forsakes his rights.

From reading the Asian news section on this forum I could say the UK'ers in Thailand are no better then the Muslims in the UK. You got Brits raping kids in Thailand, involved in drugs, involved in violence (murder on occasion), public drunkenness, visa violations, etc.

PUPILS at Islamic schools across Britain are being taught how to chop off a criminal's hand and that Jews are conspiring to take over the world, a BBC investigation has found.

Up to 5000 pupils aged between six and 18 are being taught Sharia law punishments using "weekend-school" text-books which claim those who do not believe in Islam will be subjected to "hellfire" in death.

A text book for 15-year-olds advises: "For thieves their hands will be cut off for a first offence, and their foot for a subsequent offence."

"The specified punishment of the thief is cutting off his right hand at the wrist. Then it is cauterised to prevent him from bleeding to death," it added.

Young pupils are warned that the punishment for engaging in homosexual acts is death by stoning, burning with fire or throwing off a cliff and that the "main goal" of the Jews is to "have control over the world and its resources."

The schools are part of the "Saudi Students Clubs and Schools in the UK and Ireland" organisation. The BBC investigation claimed that one school in London is owned by the Saudi government.

Education Minister Michael Gove told the BBC program: "I have no desire or wish to intervene in the decisions that the Saudi government makes in its own education system.
