Abused cat dies after outpouring of care and love

GENESEO, Ill. - A striped male shorthaired cat that was found nailed to a pole Monday has died, Henry County Humane Society officials said Thursday.

The cat became the subject of national and even international attention after Andrea Bristol spotted the cat while driving home from work. It's paw had been nailed to the pole and blood was visible a day later.

"It made me sick to my stomach," she recalled. "I immediately got very upset. I couldn't believe that someone would do such a thing."

Bristol stepped into action by calling authorities and rescuing the cat.

"It hardly moved at all," she said. "It was in really rough shape. It looked like its head had been beaten up before it got nailed to the pole. It was hardly breathing, hardly moving at all."

While the cat was treated by Atkinson veterinarian Dr. Dana MIller, Henry County Crime Stoppers offered a reward for information about this animal cruelty case. The national PETA office also contributed $2,500 to the reward money.

Residents say the cat was an inseparable pal with a neighbor, who recently died. Another neighbor, Lester Forbes, continued feeding it.

"It's so cruel," he said. "We're supposed to take care of our animals, not abuse them."

Dr. Miller provided special care for the cat, and several persons offered to adopt it.

"I hope they catch whoever did it," she said. "It's a senseless crime."

Quite amazing really, they could spend that money wisely on bombs and bullets for Afghanistan rather than finding who nailed a cat to the pole, hell they spent millions looking for bin laden and still aint found him

used to be a bloke around here, if you had a problem with snakes you would give him a call 'pete the snake man', he would turn up catch your problem snake and re locate... he wore catskin vest catskin boots and had a catskin/coon/cap, he also relocated

Couldn`t have been a Chinese who did the deed otherwise it would have been skinned alive for it`s fur and then eaten.

Unfortunately there are sadistic bastards all over the world and not just relating to animals...being stoned to death for an extra marital affair comes to mind...oh! and women being flogged for drinking a pint of beer.

Ya beat me to it. Except in China proper you'd see a small cage in front of the restaurant with 40 cats packed in like sardines, waiting to be chosen.

A few years ago, in Switzerland, there was a group of bored youths in Zurich who would nail cats to park benches and then douse them in lighter fuel and set fire to them.

National outrage. at the time i had 4 cats and lived overlooking a park where youths, the type with their crotches round their knees, would come and sit with their pitbull puppies and have a laugh teasing their dogs with "chase the cat" remarks. Luckily my cats were smart and stayed in their comfort zone. One of my neighbours called the cops and the kids and pups were never seen again. And my moggie head count was still four.

Domestic cats are one of the few creatures aside humans who kill just for fun.
Hard to get too terribly sentimental about them. Outside of peoples houses they become destructive vermin.
Though nailing one to a pole, that's getting a bit too Christian.
