'Qatari diplomat detained' after incident on US plane

'Qatari diplomat detained' after incident on US plane

A man has been detained after an incident on a flight from Washington's Reagan airport to Denver.

Two F-16 jets were scrambled to intercept the plane and escort it to land safely at Denver airport, the US Northern Command said.

There were initial reports that a Qatari diplomat had tried to set fire to his shoes.

But officials later said no explosives were found and he had apparently been trying to smoke in a plane toilet.

When confronted, the man "made a joke about it", which further alarmed people on board the flight, said an unnamed official quoted by the Associated Press.

The man has been identified as a Qatari diplomat stationed at the country's Washington embassy.

The plane, with more than 160 passengers and crew on board, arrived at Denver International Airport, where TV footage showed it surrounded by security vehicles.

The US Transportation Security Administration said the suspect was being interviewed by law enforcement officials.

"TSA is monitoring an incident on board United Airlines flight 663 from [Washington to Denver] after receiving initial reports that a Federal Air Marshal responded to a passenger possibly causing a disturbance on board this aircraft," the agency said in a statement.

The incident came just months after a Nigerian man allegedly tried to detonate a bomb on a passenger jet arriving in the US.

Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, 23, was overpowered by passengers and crew shortly before the Northwest Airlines plane landed in Detroit from Amsterdam on 24 December. He has been charged with attempting to destroy a plane.

In 2001, Richard Reid, a British citizen, attempted to blow up a transatlantic passenger jet carrying 197 people with explosives hidden in his shoes.

I just flew Qatar airlines and when we landed in Doha this Arab prick and his black rag just barged his way past everyone, opened the curtain and got off with first and business class. Nothing said. Arrogant pricks alright. I bet if I tried to follow him I wouldn't have got far!

Qatar is run by and for one family so chances of this diplomat being a relative of the emir are pretty high. Hopefully they gave him a good going over before they found out.

Sounds a lot more like the airline, its sky hags and the TSA clowns over reacted again and turned a man smoking a cigarette into a bomb scare. The best part is that being a diplomat he can hopefully laugh at them as he walks out the door.

Sounds like every bugger went daft.
The bloke was an idiot to smoke and make stupid comments (Pity they can't bung him in the nick for a while).
The airline staff were fucking stupid. If they can't deal with this they have sod all chance if something real happened.
The US scrambling jets for a bloke smoking was way OTT.
Be happy dudes. It's a lot more fun than crying.

    Let's see . . .

Several Saudi Arabians hijack planes in the US and fly them into buildings, causing the deaths of app. 3000 people.

Response: Invasion of a country, at least one, killing tens of thousands of civilians, bringing misery to millions, letting loose local manics who kill more tens of thousands . . . oh, and have more than 3000 of their own killed in the process

Nah, completely appropriate given the locale

you europeans and americans are scared shitless and that is funny. Because there is almost no terrorist danger in western europe and to some degree in nothern america, and still every bodies lives seems to circle aaround the fear of something happening. This while there is not much you can do about it...lol. You really can't stop people who want to blow themselves up, or do you think that cia can stop them??....dream on... Let's try not to piss too much people off, and try not to go to war for stupid and non existent reasons this pisses people off ( iraq having mdw and osama binladen leading a worldwide terrorist organization from afghanistan , osama needs a map to find his own asshole lol ) .......could we do that?.

lol specially let's not look in the anus of a superstar like shahrukh khan and the former president ( both from india ) thinking they might be terrorists. Shahrukh khan came to film " My name is khan " My Name Is Khan - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia for f..ks sake lol

Sure, but he didn't have to 'scream' it. Though I am not sure this qualifies as a defense in a 'terrorism' charge. Actually, I'm sure it doesn't.

Don't think that this won't have any effect on the moron. He'll probably be asked to leave and get some shit at home for bringing his country into the limelight for the wrong reason.

It isn't all peaches and cream

^Idiot was asked to leave. His country was told to pull him out, or he would be kicked out. He left today. Probably to be reassigned to Europe after a brief cooling off period.

Wouldn't be so sure of that. Upon re-assignment he has to submit his credentials to the proposed new country . . . and the community is small enough to know when someone has been a dickhead

^Only Ambassadors have to formally present their credentials. Underlings, like him, just have their credentials sent in to the Foreign Ministry of the country for a pro forma clearance. He will probably slip through in the mix. By the way, welcome back.

^Ambassadors, High Commissioners, and Chiefs of Mission then, if you're going to be technical. Other diplomats, of any rank if they are on the Diplomatic List of a Mission do have to be approved, but do not present credentials in person. Their names and ranks are simply sent to the Foreign Ministry of X country via a Diplomatic Note for approval, and they are rubber stamped unless a major problem is noted.

Correct . . . and in this case the guy may have a problem in that he can't be too important in the royal family pecking order. Let's hope so and he gets to spend his working life in his little sandbox of a country
