Tampering with food to deter UK homeless from eating

Just caught this on Look North (BBC). I was looking for the video link but not there.

BBC News - Bridlington shops bleach food to stop homeless foraging

To summarise, a Bridlington councillor slept rough on the streets one night (a plight of the homeless thing) and was brought food that had been dumped by shops & made inedible, so it couldn't be scavenged.

Frozen food chain Iceland said staff at its Bridlington branch had occasionally "intimated" that the waste was treated, but this was against company policy.
It added that it did not offer expired food to charity because it could not be guaranteed as safe for consumption.

That's terrible, if its against company policy then what the hell are staff doing even intimating that they have? Ought to be an investigation and repercussions for them. Sounds like bloody mindedness to me

It's all over the board, sweetie. That's why I wanted the video link. They* reckon it's against health & safety to allow people to eat the food, so they contaminate/poison it so no-one can.

    *They being high street stores.

Why not just put locks on the bins if the stuff is outdated and "unfit for consumption"

That's the big supermarkets for you.
They have warehouses with mountains of food just wasting away. Why not give some to the poor? They could donate annonomously to the soup kitchens so at least some poor f**ker won't starve.
Remember Geldof giving Thatcher a hard time just before Live Aid in the 80's? Think it was a row over the "butter mountains". (The British know what I'm on about).
Makes me sick. Homelessness and hungry people on the streets of Britain should have been eradicated years ago.
I know some dudes choose to be homeless, but who chooses to be hungry?
    Rant over.

Can't imagine the laws changing to the extent of being allowed to eradicate poor homeless people, although if Maggie had been in power for much longer it wouldn't have suprised me

Why not give some to the poor?
some of those "homeless" are raking in a fair whack begging, and some are just alcoholics beyond salvation who have forgotten how to eat.

agreed, surplus food should be given away to the needy, but i wonder just how needy some of the "homeless" are, for some its a career move.

Once a tin of food has past it's expiry date it is black spotted.
It is then illegal to sell or donate the food for human consumption.

At one time I was involved in running unmarked vehicles "disposing" of black spotted tins for top brand names.

Look on Google earth,Street view, 7 Chapel Street Bridlington uk Click on the camera. Quite a small branch.

The bins can be seen on the camera at 18 North St, just round the back. Loads of them, always full.

I know of several. The old labels are removed, rust removed, tins polished, new labels attached and then reboxed with false batch stamps.
The one I used the most was in Camberwell
    Ring any bells ?

The new labels were always from a different manufacturer so that if half of London went down with food poisoning your competitor would get the blame.

There are huge quantities of food binned everyday from restaurants and markets. Seems to me distributing to hungry folks is in order and a good marketing plus for the enterprise.

Any enterprise intentionally poisoning dumped food deserves getting plenty of notoriety via media. If they don't want scraggly folks rummaging through their posh trash bins, why not hook up with charitable organization such as FareShare.

Apart from the obvious cases of metal disabilities, most of the homelss here on the South coast choose to be, they move here for the summer, rich pickings begging amongst the tourists, spend their benifits on strong booze, get fed at the soup kitchens sleep in the night shelters.
Some recieved money for sexual favours from the priest running the shelter in order that they could feed their drug habits.

Local councils ban street drinking inorder that they can move the scumbags out of sight.

Example, I have brother who contracted rubella prior to birth, sustained brain damage,
My parents have taken care of him all their lives, assistance from the state £42.00 per week.

Drug addict, same age who lives in same street, assistance from state ; Rent paid, £132.00 per week in cash, any treatment paid by state, sells Big Issue magazine earns by his own admission £100 per week.

My local shop spoils any out of date produce to stop them shitting behind his shop after they have raided his bins.

I have run out of sympathy for most

Bower. Your post has changed my way of thinking.
I'm a bit out of touch with life in the U.K, but everyone I have come to meet over say the last 4/5 years have said that you wouldn't believe it now with all the immigrants (another story) and lazy f**ks living off the state.
I felt pride after knowing I had done a hard weeks graft and getting my salary. Nowadays all these spongers are sitting down the pub comparing how much benifits they are raking in.

Some of the comments on here beggar belief . The muther fukkers who look-up to people who have plenty or rich and have absolutly no idea of how they got their money. People walking around with a shirt and tie.. And then you look down on a guy,, and you don't even know his story, and many are unavoidable tragedies which put them on the bread-line or the street . You really do believe you are a bunch of smart-arses. Have a little compassion. You could so easily end -up in the same situation. And if a person chooses to live that way then that's his or her choice. There is absolutly nothing moral about society. Though you may think it's moral . You believe all the propaganda.
