Antarctic supply ship Aurora Australis has to sail back to Hobart after refuelling hose left behind

A costly blunder has forced Australia's Antarctic flagship MV Aurora Australis to make a special return voyage to Hobart after someone forget to pack a vital piece of equipment.

A big, long, very large hose used to transport fuel hundreds of metres from ship to shore at Macquarie Island was left behind on the dock in Hobart.

It wasn't until the specialist re-fuelling crew of about half a dozen got settled on this Southern Ocean voyage that they realised it was missing.

The Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) blunder has forced it to organise a special additional return voyage to Macquarie Island at a cost sources say will start upwards from $500,000.

An AAD statement sent to AAP on Wednesday said the precise cost had not been determined.

The ship is due at Davis Station to pick up expeditioners this weekend.

It was scheduled to then off-load cargo at Macquarie Island and while that was happening it was supposed to supply fuel to the sub-Antarctic station, home to about 40 expeditioners over summer. It will now return to Hobart before going to Macquarie Island with the hose.

It will have carried one of the AAD's largest and most complex cargo loads since leaving Hobart on March 8.

The Macquarie Island delivery crew are due back in Hobart on April 16, after picking up the hose and making the special Macquarie Island delivery, 40 days after they first boarded the ship.

Wednesday's AAD statement said it is responsible for the logistical service but ``the preparation and loading of cargo for the Aurora Australis is a process jointly managed by AAD, Capital P&O Logistics and P&O Polar.''

"In the most recent voyage departing for Davis Station and Macquarie Island on 8 March 2010 a refuelling hose was inadvertently left behind. At this stage it is unclear how the hose was left on the dock.''

However a "full analysis'' of the hose fiasco has been promised.

Wonder who the Capt. of that ship is,, maybe that Watson asshole off the Sea Shepard??

Anyone can make a mistake tho, once me and a couple of friends was going to camp and hunt Elk for a week, so we made camp, unloaded 14 cases of Beer and a few bottles of whiskey, Had a hell of a fine supper of Chili one of the guys wife had made, went to sleep about midnite pretty well fucked up, got up the the morning and after breakfast, found that we had 1- 30.06 1- 300 Win Mag and 1- 8MM Rem Mag and no fucking ammo for any of em.

Just finished looking at your pics most enjoyable, are you the one in the beard and tall and slim.

You wouldn't have needed any rounds, chilli, beer and whiskey, the Elk would have sniffed you from 4km away!

Nothing to do with anti-whaling etc. Aurora Australis was supposed to supply fuel to the sub-Antarctic station on Macquarie Island, base of about 40 scientists etc over the summer. This little blunder by the Australian Antarctic Division looks like costing upwards of AUD500K.

We drove into town, about 50 miles into Pendleton and bought factory canned ammo, And we needed 5 more cases of beer if we was gonna last out the week. within 30 minutes the next morning after leaving camp I had a spike bull on the ground, and spent the day packing it into camp, and good well made chili does not make you fart,, junk that is added does that. Fact I gonna have it for brekky in a few minutes.

I understand that, just putting the intellectual capacity of the Capt.'s into perspective, but loading a specialty load like that it is easy to forget or overlook something.

Yeah perhaps but I work on offshore support vessels for oil and gas and I wonder what reaction we'd get to 'everybody makes mistakes' once it was discovered that we'd sailed minus a major piece of kit - oops indeed...

But then I have made few mistakes in my life as I am damn near perfect.

Sounds like something a wife would pull (remove ammo supply) just to see if it were missed on the proposed hunting trip. Especially after she noticed the amount of beer and booze being taken, or she may have noticed the ties and white shirts packed with the camouflage gear.

Yes, 14 cases of beer just about fills a 10 foot pickup camper, but no it was us that forgot the ammo, as we were going elk huntying, but camping in the forest has long cold nights that time of year.

Not the cloths, but did notice that the guy that told her he was meeting me in the mountains where I was on a job to go fishing had ran off without taking my fishing gear.
