I remember some copyright issues with regard to George Harrison's "My Sweet Lord" and Tom Petty suing the Red Hot Chilli Peppers for Dani California but never heard of the final outcome.

I have also spoken to a number of songwriters and they always have admitted that previous songs have influenced them with regard to a riff or tune they have heard in the past.

Kind of sad really as I don't believe any artist intentionally rips off something but moreover modifies something they have heard before.

These days they call it 'sampling' and all asunder artists do it, snipping bits & pieces of melody from other songs because they know it has a catch... Annoys the piss out of me when a 'new' song comes on the radio and for all intents & purposes, it's a 30 years old re-write of another popular tune...

I agree with the posts that state it is much ado about nothing. Ferchristsakes the kids ditty was written so long ago and I do have a pretty good appreciation of music and I cant hear much of a resemblance....

This thread is an infringement on a similar thread I started last year.

I'm suing Mid for 1000 repo points.

About time you said something sensible! Listened to the original acoustic Down Under song today as recorded by Colin Hay a year before it was released by Men at Work ... f'n awesome and if you aint heard it and I'll endeavour to post the link once sober. Then listed to the version released. Certainly the flute music from kookaburra song has a big impact, but given the track is so embedded in the minds of Aussies' one must ask how important the flute music was to the success of the track. Wonder if they'll start thinking if it contributed to 5%, 10%, 15% .... percent of the success etc.

    What absolute f'n bollocks.

Anyway the original track without the flute music can be found here - Colin Hay plays Land Down Under without the offending flute to show it was all his song | News.com.au

Funny Wayne Jnr recently came home from school singing "Kookaburra sits on the electric wire ... jumping up and down with his balls on fire"

Where the fuck do they draw the line?

Next year back I picked up one of the first walkman players ever made on the way back when we stopped in Tokyo. Put that tape in turned it up full speed let friends listen and again the famous quote. "Slack jawed and not much too say" Amazing to see each and every person freak out over the song.

One of the impact songs of my life. Those years I was on top of the frigging world.

It always baffled me why men at work split up just after becoming world famous. Colin Hayes and the other members vanished into obscurity afterwards..
