    French minister urges burka ban

    French minister urges burka ban

Fadela Amara said France was a beacon of enlightened Islam

A ban on the wearing of the burka in France would help stem the spread of the "cancer" of radical Islam, one of its female Muslim ministers has said.

Urban Regeneration Minister Fadela Amara told the Financial Times that a veil covering everything but the eyes represented "the oppression of women".

Ms Amara said she was "in favour of the burka not existing in my country".

The comments come as French MPs hold hearings on whether to ban the garment, which covers the body from head to toe.

The National Assembly set up the 32-member commission after President Nicolas Sarkozy said the burka was "not welcome" in France, home to Western Europe's largest population of Muslims.

The burka represents not a piece of fabric but the political manipulation of a religion
Fadela Amara, French Minister for Urban Regeneration

Mr Sarkozy said it was unacceptable to have women who were "prisoners behind netting, cut off from all social life, deprived of identity".

In 2004, France controversially banned Muslim headscarves and other "conspicuous" religious symbols in state schools and by public employees.

    'Political manipulation'

In an interview with the Financial Times on Saturday, Mr Amara said she was in favour of an outright ban on the burka, even though it might be difficult to apply.

"The burka represents not a piece of fabric but the political manipulation of a religion that enslaves women and disputes the principal of equality between men and women, one of the founding principles of our republic," she said.

France was a beacon for an enlightened Islam at ease with modernity, so it was necessary to fight the "gangrene, the cancer of radical Islam which completely distorts the message of Islam", she said.

Ms Amara, who is of Algerian descent, argued that banning the burka would help women to stand up to the extremists in their communities.

"The vast majority of Muslims are against the burka. It is obvious why," she said.
"Those who have struggled for women's rights back home in their own countries - I'm thinking particularly of Algeria - we know what it represents and what the obscurantist political project is that lies behind it, to confiscate the most fundamental liberties."

She added that the 2004 ban on headscarves in schools had helped Muslim women face up to male chauvinism in their communities.

Well, with all the derogatory remarks about the French and what (insert insult here) they all are, they seem to be the most vocal in standing up to extremist Islamic immigrants in their own country. I'll bet in the UK you'd get an ASBO just pointing out that a woman was wearing a burkini.

They aren't standing up to the extremists. They are standing up the weakest of the Islamic immigrants.

If goverments want to ban certain types of clothing, then I'd rather them ban the idiotic practice of men wearing jeans half way down their arse with boxer shorts protruding 4 inches above them and the crotch of the jeans down somewhere around the knees.

It sounds like you'd rather stand up to even weaker violators of social decorum. Maybe you should start a campaign for the proper way to wear jeans and boxers. How valiant.

This isn't about bad fashion sense. It's about gender discrimination of the most heinous type, and a symbol of radical Islam.

It's not a symbol of radical Islam. A symbol of radical Islam is a suicide bomber with explosives strapped to his body and a switch in his hand yelling "Allah Akbar".

Many Islamic women choose to wear headscarf as it is culturally accepted thing to do.

Forcing them to removed the a headscarf would be the equivilent of my wife going to Bondi Beach and being forced to go topless. While there's nothing wrong with those who choose to go topless, it is definately against her cultural upbringing.

And many do not, "choose" to.
Also, coming from a standpoint of what is and is not radical.
Religious laws that require anyone to do a thing and threaten pain of death or dismemberment for not obeying are, by definition, radical. That is unless, of course, your definition or 'Radical' reads as follows. RA-di-cle: 1) A word often shouted by the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle "Michaelangelo" before entering battle.

IMHO the point is that strict adherence to any religions 'laws' or 'ethos' is damaging to the idea that personal freedoms are paramount in a society. It doesn't matter where or which religion you're referring to. The right to choose is impeded by radicalism.
So, about Burkas. Childern, young adults or any other demographic is prohibited from wearing a disguise in a public place for security purposes. As for schools and businesses, we ask that they not make us pray before work. Also, Johnny can't tell Suzy that she's going to hell for kissing Andy. Why? Because it's offensive to parade your personal belief across the faces of others. The only reason we've made the Christians stop doing it is because they got to do it first. Now Islam, it's your turn to get along with the rest and either integrate or keep your Burkas in the home.

I agree with this. If they choose to wear the headscarf, then it should be their right. It is part of their culture, and it would be like me as a woman, going to an Islamic country and dissing every woman who chooses to wear one. They are not forcing me to wear one. It is their belief, and whether I agree with it or not, it is not up to me to change it.

If France wants to ban Burkas, then let them, as it is their culture. Most multicultural societies actually allow different religions to practice their culture out of respect - to a degree of course.

This thread is about the burka, not the hijab. She's suggesting a ban on the burka, which is not a headscarf by any stretch of the imagination.

Banning the wearing of the burka is equivalent to not allowing a man to put a woman into bondage gear with a dog collar around her neck and leading her around town on a leash, kicking her if she doesn't bark good.

^ Can't you be a little more tolerant, MSD?

How about a little splish-splash acid bath for spurning a suitor or withholding food if she doesn't want to bump uglies?

Yep, I don't agree with the wearing of the Burka either. As far as I'm aware countries such as Saudi, and Afghanistan still wear them.

It is good to send a message by banning them on one hand, but I still think it is their choice to practice their culture/religion. It isn't even part of their religion.

I'm a chick and I find the burka offensive and oppressive, not only to the women wearing them but to me. It's not fashion and a way only to keep their women "chaste", it's to keep other Muslim men from leering and grabbing them -- my property. And, it's a high security risk.

Yes and the minister is only referring to the Burka, which is usually a light blue covering that features netting to cover the eyes, even hands should not show, it's the Afghan Taleban's garment of choice.

The article is misleading, it shows pictures of headscarves and discusses hijab
but I believe the ban is not intended for these items.

I'll reiterate, The Koran has nothing about women dressing any differently, it is a culural imposition that is most definetly rooted in sexism.

Saw a big black guy wandering around here in China the other day with his pants like that, he looked retarded but I'm sure he thought he looked uber cool. Had the urge to dak him (come up behind him and yank his pants down, they were halfway there already anyway). What's he going to do, chase after me with his pants around his angles?
I'm surprised this (daking) hasn't become a national sport.

Yep, no arse, no jeans hanging down showing your asscrack. There should be a law!

You are right, many muslims choose not to wear the hijab. The Burka is too much covering, and it is France's right to change the law. Good for France. Unfortunately, many woman in Saudi and other radical muslim countries still have to wear them, and are subjugated to laws like allowing their husbands to rape them.
