Careful what you say, you'll be thrown to the wolves for condoning the fathers actions but I know where you're coming from.
I appreciate you understanding my point.

Well just to clarify, it was clearly the father's fault - he went mental. His relatives, friends or wife should have seen this coming and removed the kids from his presence a long time ago. Everyday you hear tragic stories like this unfortunately. What's more unfortunate is some of these tragedies could be prevented.

    Poor little boy.
    It is sad.

But it's always been very arrogant of us as humans to expect life to be rosy all the time, especially being that we're the worst species on the planet and screw up the planet, it's animals and ourselves.

Speak for yourself..not all people go around wearing rose coloured glasses.

That guy in the pic looks pretty upset to me, all snot and tears and anguish. The little girls problems are over, in fact he probably did her a favour.

I'd take life over death any day. This girl did not have a choice.

The son, well... I don't envy him but he'll survive (it's part of life) - kids always do survive and he'll grow up never forgetting it. He'll probably grow up to be a nice bloke unlike these spoiled brats who never experience the gritty reality of life other than being showered with toys and computer games.

How do you know he will survive. The father could shoot him next. This could harden him, and make him grow up to be an abuser too.

The ex wife - we'll, she's gonna be pretty distraught be it her fault or not, but mentally ill people are products of their own society.

Mentally ill people have a psychological and mental disorder. They are not a product of a their society, they are a product of our society, that doesn't really do a lot to help mentally ill people.

Of course it's a sad story but toughen up, shit happens.

So nice to see so much empathy here..NOT!

The side that I said I agreed with, was the whole media story and how people could react differently in regards to empathy. You proved the point.

what do you think would happen if someone posted a 'distress' message here on this board for example.. not a newbie but someone who has been posting for a while and is better known? do you think everyone would take the piss out of em? or do you think anyone would be a stand up person and see if they could help?

I personally have been seeking help in every way I know for a number of issues over a period of months if not even years but all related to gaining an income to support my family and provide them a future. Not welfare mind you, but a bonafide paying position and I have few limits on my skills but they are more directed towards technical skills. I'm willing to work though of course that has some minor, reasonable limitations, and all I've gotten is snide remarks, incrimination's and piss taking..No one takes anything serious or they do and take it with the wrong intentions until you go over the edge and then it's too late, until then, you're considered weak minded, loser, useless kunt, etc. etc. all without knowing what you are personally going through as an individual and your personal circumstances surrounding your ultimate decision. That isn't excusing this man, but it is a reaching out to give some empathy as he also deserves it as does his poor daughter and her brothers..

It boggles the mind how a person willing to work but unable to force someone to take them on in an environment that makes it very difficult with work permits and the like being required is considered a loser, low life, or whatever other dismissive, demeaning and demoralizing adjectives they are labeled just for trying unsuccessfully to gain an opportunity...

^I don't get the connection?? The guy shot his kid off of a bridge, FFS! I do get travellers point. How did the system lead to this behavior? The guy obviously had some major issues. If he was mentally ill, then he could of just went insane..maybe he was off of his meds. I don't know the whole story. Still doesn't justify what he did though.

According to press reports (?) everyone was completly surprised by his action. His lawyers have said that although there were issues between the couple, over the kids, it was not vindictive and they thought the negotiations were progressing reasonably.

His family have also expressed bewilderment at his actions.

ok, now this article about it today is going over the top and full of bs

Courts 'let West Gate girl down'

    Article from: AAP
    February 05, 2009 05:32pm

THE family of a four-year-old girl who died after being thrown from Melbourne's West Gate Bridge has hit out at the court system for failing to protect her.
Darcey Freeman died from terrible injuries several hours after plunging 58m from the bridge into the Yarra River last Thursday.
Her family said today it would never come to terms with how she died.
"We will never understand the reasons why or how any individual could ever do such an act to such a precious little girl,'' her uncle, Tim Barnes, said.
"Sometimes things in life are just not fair.''
Darcey's father Arthur Phillip Freeman has been charged with her murder.
Mr Barnes criticised the court system and said it had let the family down.
"For the past two years, the various authorities have been made aware of our fear for the safety of the children and unfortunately no one would listen,'' he said.
"We feel the judicial system has failed our family and will continue to fail other families until someone in authority starts to take action.''
Victorian Premier John Brumby said his preliminary information indicated there had been no contact with authorities before Darcey's death.
"There is no evidence of any contact with the authorities,'' Mr Brumby said in Canberra.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has supported a proposal by Darcey's relatives to remember the little girl on a permanent annual children's day, much like Mother's Day and Father's Day.
Mr Rudd said he did not know what the processes were associated with setting up an annual children's day but he supported the idea.
"Out of such an appalling tragedy, how do we turn it to good?'' he said in Canberra today after a meeting with the nation's premiers.
The Prime Minister said all Australians were shocked and appalled by Darcey's death.
"This tragedy, I think, has been gut wrenching for the entire nation.''
Mr Brumby said a week in October in Victoria was dedicated as Children's Week, and coincided with International Children's Day.
"Perhaps it might be an element of Children's Week,'' he said.
Mr Barnes expressed the family's profound gratitude for widespread public support since Darcey's death.
"Our family have been overwhelmed by the public support shown to us from all around the world,'' he said.
"We wish to thank the public for their heartfelt sympathy and well wishes.''
He also paid tribute to the Victoria Police and staff at the Royal Children's Hospital.
"Words cannot express our appreciation for the wonderful care given to Darcey during her final hours.''
The family also gave its approval for a public memorial service.
However, Mr Barnes also asked the public to respect the family's need to mourn in private and to hold a private memorial for Darcey.
"The ongoing care and development of (Darcey's brothers) Ben and Jack is paramount to us and privacy will assist us greatly with this.''
Meanwhile, Darcey's heartbroken mother Peta Freeman also paid tribute to her daughter in a notice in Melbourne's Herald Sun newspaper.
"My darling daughter. My heart will always be with you, as you will be with me,'' she said.
"We will miss you every day and remember you with love and laughter.''

Hey but Willy, there is some concern in Aus about the 'mediation process' where a parent who has harmed (or threatened to) their children or partner is allowed access to the partner and the children in the interests of fairness to all. It may be fair to the partners, but is it fair to the kids.

Last year in Aus was just terrible for children killed by parents in marital disputes.

There has to be a better way.

a child's day in her name?

seems a bit OTT to me. why not choose a child who has done something brave or incredible, showed courage or a tenacious spirit ?

similar to Terry Fox from Canada ? (he was a teenager if i remember correctly) but this girl's claim to fame is murdered by her father.

    a bit off.

    Yep, way way OTT.

Why not the four children killed in Southern NSW in about June or indeed, any of the others. I cant think of them all now, but there has been a rash of it lately.

    Something is going terribly wrong!

Misdirection or spin doctoring to cover the state of the economy and the new benefit package that will put our government into deficit.

True, in the entire history of the human race children have never been killed by their parents . Until now.

It's unfortunate, but human beings can be unpredictable and violent. No amount of government intervention will determine or stop some people from cracking up and doing something heinous.

Until we change our minds about how children can better be raised we will just have gird ourselves for more stories like this.

Are you trying to equate your circumstances with the guy involved in this terrible tragedy?
(for your sake, I hope not). Also some 'forum emergency' is a world apart from what happens in reality.

I am not taking sides here. All I was saying was that this tragedy possibly could have been prevented if relatives/friends saw signs leading to it (which wasn't the case according to Lilly's post above).

nice....walked right into that didn't you? My children are not in any danger from me, but my life is no less in critical standing...It's a shame you referred to my situation in the very same light as others no doubt also referred to his situation..The same sort of complacency, denial and cynicism his friends and family no doubt had..wouldn't it be quite sad and tragic if all someone had in their lives to turn to was an online "Forum".. Do you know of any resources here in Thailand where a farang could get some assistance if one needed it? I don't and haven't been able to find any either, just the very same attitudes and perspectives presented here, likely a very valid reason why the suicide rate for foreigners here is so high...

Though not in Thailand the examples and analogies are still valid..

    mad or was he bad?

Bridge dad told wife to say goodbye - court
    March 08, 2011

Darcey Freeman fell 50m to her death from the Westgate Bridge
    Source:
    Herald Sun

A MAN told his former wife to say goodbye to her children before he threw their four-year-old daughter off Melbourne's West Gate Bridge, a jury has heard.

Arthur Phillip Freeman, 37, of Hawthorn, has pleaded not guilty in the Victorian Supreme Court to murdering his daughter Darcey.

The court has heard that Mr Freeman stopped his car in an emergency lane high on the bridge, carried Darcey to the railing and threw her off in January 2009.

Witnesses described her falling like a rag doll to the Yarra River, about 50m below.

Darcey, who was to start school that day, died from drowning and other injuries, the Melbourne jury has been told.

In a call to his former wife Peta Barnes around the time his daughter died, Mr Freeman said: "You will never see them again" and "say goodbye to your children", the court was told today.

Defence lawyer, David Brustman, SC, said Mr Freeman was mentally impaired at the time. He has no argument with the facts of the case.

Mr Brustman asked the jury "was Mr Freeman mad or was he bad?"

He said Mr Freeman was so mentally impaired and his decision-making process so flawed that it caused him to kill his daughter.

The trial before Justice Paul Coghlan continues tomorrow.

I can understand that being mentally ill at the time is an explanation for this crime and reduces his responsibility for what he did. What I do not understand is why this is ever seen as a reason for reducing the overall sentence that he will receive, on the grounds that he susceptible to a condition that causes him to murder people, he needs to be locked up for life not as a punishment to to protect society from him.

I don't think any sane human being would consider something like this. I would suggest the bloke had a psychotic episode. If he ever recovers, the horror of his actions will probably destroy the rest of his life.

There isn't enough information here to really form an opinion: Did he have a history of violence? Did he have a history of mental illness? Were the warning signs there or did the ex warn anyone, and if so were they taken seriously?

It's a terrible thing to happen, and it seems to be happening more and more often in the Western world, and it happens to both sexes, as this court case from yesterday illustrates:

    Mother kills Children

    Guilty

Westgate bridge dad to face plea hearing
    March 29, 2011

Arthur Freeman has been found guilty of the murder of his four-year-old daughter Darcey.
    (AAP: Julian Smith)

The Melbourne man found guilty of murdering his four-year-old daughter by throwing her off the Westgate Bridge will face a plea hearing on Friday.

Arthur Freeman, 37, of Hawthorn, threw his daughter Darcey off the bridge in January 2009. He pleaded not guilty by reason of mental impairment.

The jury delivered the guilty verdict on Monday evening, after five days of deliberation.

Freeman sat staring straight ahead and showed little emotion as the verdict was read out. His parents sat silently at the back of the court.

Freeman's former wife and the child's mother, Peta Barnes, also showed little emotion. Her family wept and hugged each other.

Several jurors sobbed openly in the jury box as Justice Coghlan thanked them for their persistence.

During the trial the court heard Freeman murdered his daughter after a custody dispute.

A family law expert, Caroline Counsel, has told ABC local radio, there was no support for Freeman because his case was settled outside court.

"Some of the difficulties are of course, that when you are having negotiations between a couple outside of the court system," she said.

"That this is not a case that was determined by the court. It was decided outside the court system."

    Urgent recommendations

Victoria's child safety commissioner has made a number of urgent recommendations to the Victorian Government as a result of the case.

Commissioner Bernie Geary says protocols for professionals dealing with child safety issues need to be examined.

"We just need to maintain vigilance and this case reminds us of the importance of the best interests of the child," he said.

"If a child is in any way at risk, those notifications and concerns need to be passed on."

You can string the bloke up if it makes you feel better but it doesn't detract from the fact that the bloke obviously had some kind of mental breakdown, and more should be done to predict and prevent this kind of behaviour than wringing your hands and gnashing your teeth.

I disagree. A jury of his peers made the decision that his defence case was a load of bollocks. They would have been directed by the judge about the law to make that decision. Of course it is all subject to appeal.
