US Naval forces fail in bid to rescue sailors taken hostage by pirates. Lieutenant Colonel Lawhorn told Channel 4 News: 'We heard small arms fire on the boat and decided to do an emergency assault'

The four sailors were round the world travellers Phyllis Macay and Bob Riggle from Seattle and their friends - and the boat's owners - Jean and Scott Adam from California.

Their boat, the Quest, was attacked by pirates on Friday and was being monitored by US forces. Four navy warships were involved, including an aircraft carrier.

Somali Pirates Face Death Penalty In Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — Malaysian prosecutors filed charges carrying the death penalty Friday against seven suspected Somali pirates accused of attacking a Malaysian-operated ship in the Gulf of Aden, in the first such charges in Asia against the African sea bandits.

The Somalis – some as young as 15 years old – are suspected of taking 23 Filipino crew members captive aboard a chemical tanker on Jan. 20. Malaysian naval commandos responsible for protecting the vessel stormed it less than two hours later and freed the crew. The pirates shot at the commandos, but no injuries were reported.

The Somalis were brought to Malaysia, where government lawyers on Friday charged them with using firearms against Malaysian armed forces personnel with the intention of causing death or hurt.

The charge carries a penalty of death by hanging, but prosecutors said that if convicted, three of the Somalis are expected to have their sentences commuted to prison terms because they are minors.

Many suspected pirates detained by navies are released after being disarmed because some nations are reluctant to bear the cost of putting them on trial and imprisoning them, while others fear that suspects might seek to claim asylum.

Didn't the Russians deal with it somewhat better a few months ago... Unless the Americans are gonna toruture them and find out their villages for napalm attacks... which is all but justifyable if these somalis are intent on random killings of global citizens, imho.

So, they were not only stupid to be sailing into what they knew was harm's way, but were doing so to convert the world. Just saying........guess god must not have been paying attention....

OK I may have embellished the US forces, but on the other hand, maybe not.

They should have gone ahead with the carrier version of the stealth bomber and they could have sneaked up without them knowing.

Whilst i agree there is nothing more annoying than those 'on a mission with a bible' at times. I understand they were sailing off the coast of Oman when these Somali pirates took them. Its hard to belive that the worlds navies cannot stop this. The problem now is that collectivly these pirates are now holding some 300 hostages from all over the world, its a death sentance for them if Somalia is blockaded with lethal force.

^Yep. It's a country in name only, and there is no central government, military or police to deal with. The hostages, most of whom are poor third world merchant sailors, are indeed in a world of hurt. The problem escalated to this level because of a total lack of response from Western powers for a very long time, leading the pirates to believe they could operate with impunity, and that they had found a major cash cow - which they had. I feel only sadness for the poor merchant marines who are in this situation. That said, I have little sympathy for wealthy westerners who sail in areas known to be dangerous, and then expect their governments to bail them out. I have even less sympathies for missionaries - of any religion. I fully expect that the next step will be their church or relatives filing suit against the USG for getting them killed.

^Well, I owe the family an apology. Rather than filing suit against the USG, the daughter has issued a press statement thanking all of the military personnel who put their lives at risk attempting to rescue her parents. In this case, it's nice to be wrong.

Whilst i agree there is nothing more annoying than those 'on a mission with a bible' at times. I understand they were sailing off the coast of Oman when these Somali pirates took them.

Still, considering the high piracy rate in and around that area I would consider it an unacceptable risk to go any where near it.

That's just me but I tend to use a bit of common sense.

Is the other side any better? Obama hoped for a big political coup by staging a "daring" rescue, instead he got 4 dead Americans. The American Government and their Navy are nearly as much to blame for these deaths as the pirates. The captives were likely being kept alive for a ransom payment, which should have been a private matter between their family and the pirates, and they are dead because of politics. Had the ransom been paid, they probably would have been released to induce the families of future captives to also pay ransom. I sure their family is grateful for the assistance of their moronic manic government.
