Well that could have been worse...

Passengers panic after Boeing 737 goes off runway and ends up halfway down steep slope close to water’s edge

A plane skidded off the runway of a Turkish coastal airport and ended up halfway down a steep slope into the Black Sea, causing panic among passengers.
The incident happened on Saturday night at Trabzon airport in north-east Turkey. No passengers or crew were hurt, Turkish media reported on Sunday.
Pictures from the site showed the plane’s nose close to the water’s edge.
Trabzon’s governor, Yücel Yavuz, said all 162 passengers and crew on board were evacuated from the plane. Yavuz said the cause of the accident was not yet known and the airport was closed until 8am local time (5am GMT).
Pegasus Airlines said in a statement that the Boeing 737-800 aircraft, which departed from Ankara late on Saturday, “had a runway excursion incident” as it landed, but the 162 passengers, two pilots and four cabin crew were unhurt.

^ A 737-800, must have been quite new. I recall an Air France A340 did something similar in Canada years ago, when that aircraft was brand spanking new.

The equivalent off having a bingle in your new car on the way home from the dealership - it would hurt so much more!

Anyone flying to/through AMS should take note:

Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport has suspended all flights and the Dutch national rail service halted all trains as a powerful storm lashes the Netherlands, toppling trees and causing traffic chaos.
The airport said all take-offs and landings were halted “until further notice” because of the severe weather conditions.
Flag carrier KLM already had scrapped more than 200 flights before the storm.

Amsterdam's Schiphol axes all flights as storm brings chaos to Europe

Severe storm lashes Belgium, Germany, Netherlands and UK, uprooting power lines and trees

    Thu 18 Jan 2018
    The Guardian Newspaper

All flights at Schiphol airport in Amsterdam have been cancelled as a severe storm batters north-west Europe.
The hub scrapped 260 flights amid gusts of nearly 90mph (140km/h). “Due to severe weather conditions all air traffic has been suspended until further notice,” a spokesman said.

Schiphol later said some flights would resume as the storm moved inland, but that there would be severe delays.
Germany, Belgium and the UK have also been hit by strong winds. In Britain, 70mph gusts were recorded, and thousands of homes in south-east England have been left without electricity.

Overhead power lines that supply trains have been damaged and trees were brought crashing on to tracks, causing severe delays for thousands of people.

Driving conditions in parts ofScotland were described by the Met Office as extremely hazardous, and motorists were advised to stay off the roads because of blustery winds, heavy snow and icy conditions.
Meanwhile, water authorities in the low-lying Netherlandswere monitoring the weather conditions and preparing to close locks and storm barriers because of high water levels.

Photograph: PAMany trains were delayed and cancelled between the towns of Gouda and Alphen aan den Rijn after a collision between a train and a trampoline, the national rail service said. Trees were uprooted and lorries toppled by high winds, but there were no immediate reports of casualties.
Neighbouring Belgium was also lashed by the storm, leading to the closure of Ghent port.

In Germany, railway operator Deutsche Bahn said it had suspended all services in the western state of North Rhine-Westphalia, the country’s most populous state, leaving hundreds of thousands of travellers and commuters stranded.
“Since this affects many long-distance connections, there are effects on the entire rail services, also internationally,” Deutsche Bahn said.
In many parts of Germany, schools remained shut as the country prepared for heavy winds, snow and rain. The authorities advised residents of western and northern Germany to stay at home on Thursday.
The DPA news agency reported that police had said there were crashes “every other minute” on highways between Wilhelmshaven and Westerstede in northern Germany.

Malaysia Airlines jet makes emergency landing in Alice Springs

    Channel News Asia
    18 Jan 2018

SYDNEY: A Malaysian Airlines flight from Sydney to Kuala Lumpur had to make an emergency landing at Alice Springs on Thursday (Jan 18).

Flight MH122, which was carrying 224 passengers, was diverted to Alice Springs after one of the jet’s engines started making disturbing sounds, reports said.

Chin Kanani told ABC his wife became alarmed when she heard a banging sound.
"She said she was on the loo when she started hearing loud banging noises from the right-hand side of the plane and that's when all it started," Mr Kanani said.
"It was like hell this flight and they were told to be ready for an emergency landing."
According to passengers, the pilot had made a "brace-for-impact" call but managed to land the A330-300 safely despite having only one working engine.

"The pilot landed on one engine only, one of them was completely broken," Mohamad Nogheib, a fellow passenger, told ABC.
Malaysia Airlines said in a statement on Thursday that Flight MH122 had been diverted due to "technical reasons".
"The A330-300 aircraft safely landed in Alice Springs Airport at 5.48pm," the airline said.
MH122 departed Sydney Airport at 1.06pm and was scheduled to arrive Kuala Lumpur at 6.30pm the same day, the airline added.

Hotels have been arranged for passengers in Alice Springs while replacement flights are being organised.

BA pilot arrested by armed police for being 'drunk' onboard Gatwick flight

Attendants on flight 2063 to Mauritius call 999 after allegedly smelling alcohol on officer’s breath

Armed police arrested a British Airwayspilot seconds before takeoff after the cabin crew raised fears he may have been drunk.
Attendants on the Boeing 777 flight 2063 called 999 after allegedly smelling alcohol on one of the officers’ breath.
Police boarded the plane, bound for Mauritius, shortly before the scheduled takeoff time of 8:20pm on Thursday.

Shocked passengers reportedly looked on as the officer was removed from the flight.
A 49-year-old man from West Drayton, London, has been arrested and remains in police custody, Sussex Police said.
The man was arrested on suspicion of performing an aviation function when the level of alcohol was over the prescribed limit.

A spokesperson for BA said: “We’re taking this matter extremely seriously and are assisting the police with their inquiries.
“We are sorry for the delay to our customers. The aircraft remained at the gate until an alternative third pilot joined the flight crew.
“The safety and security of our customers and crew is always our top priority.”

Not to be confused with the Airbus A380.

Appears to be that the Airbus consortium is cornering the market, worldwide, as such applies to mid-range and long-haul aircraft.

    Jet Airways again....

NEW DELHI: Jet Airways has grounded two pilots for a "tail strike" in Thailand last week. The incident reportedly happened when the airline's Boeing 737 was taking off from Bangkok for Delhi with over 160 people on board. During take off, the plane's rear section of fuselage (main body of aircraft) hit the runway.
Confirming this, a Jet spokesman said: "Jet flight 9W 65 of January 19, 2018, from Bangkok to Delhi experienced a tail-strike. The Boeing 737-800 with 8 crew and 155 guests, landed safely at Delhi. The aircraft was inspected and cleared for operations by the Jet Airways' engineering and safety team."

"The airline has reported the event to the regulatory authorities and is also investigating the matter. As a standard practice, the crew of the flight had been placed off active duty to assist with the investigations. At Jet Airways, safety of our guests and crew is of paramount importance," he added.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (
DGCA) is probing this incident. While tail strikes can happen for a number of reasons, human error, say experienced pilots, is the most common cause. Airlines globally stress on crew training as the most effective way of preventing this phenomenon.

"Tail strike can led to significant damage to rear fuselage, repairing which is both expensive and prolonged exercise. Tail strike during landing can led to more damage than the same thing happening during take off," said a senior airline pilot.

"Though tail strike occurs in both daylight and darkness, and in both good and bad weather, the amount of flight crew experience with the model of airplane flown is a more significant factor. While tail strike may occur to pilots with abundant flight time in a model, most occur to pilots who are transitioning from one airplane model to another and have fewer than 100 hours of flight time in the new model. Incidents are greatest among pilots during their first heavy-weight operations in the new model, especially when weather is marginal," the Boeing website says.

State-owned Qatar Airways has agreed to release detailed financial statements, the US government said on Tuesday, as part of a response to accusations by US airlines that the carrier had been illegally subsidized by its government, Reuters reports.

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said that Qatar and the United States had opened a “strategic dialogue” to address domestic airlines’ concerns that the three major Gulf carriers had been unfairly propped up by their governments, putting US carriers at a competitive disadvantage.

“The outcome we achieve will ensure a level playing field in the global aviation market,” Tillerson said at a briefing in Washington, alongside Qatari officials.
Qatar Airways was not immediately available for comment.

Qatar is expected to begin publishing annual financial statements, audited by an outside party, with the first one due over the next year, the US State Department said. Within two years, Qatar is expected to also disclose significant new transactions with other state-owned enterprises and “take steps to ensure that such transactions are based on commercial terms.”

Both sides of the debate hailed the move as a win, but Tuesday’s announcement does little to substantially change the state of play in the international flight industry.

The “Open Skies” flight agreement, which liberalizes commercial and cargo air travel, remains intact between the two countries. And US airlines’ goal to limit Gulf carriers from launching Fifth Freedom flights, which allow an airline to fly between foreign countries as part of services to and from its home country, did not apply in Qatar’s case because it does not currently operate any such flights and has no plans to.

A coalition representing the largest US carriers – American Airlines Group Inc, Delta Air Lines Inc and United Continental Holdings Inc – praised the State Department announcement as a victory for the domestic industry, following years of lobbying the federal government to take a tougher stance against the three Gulf carriers for what they say were illegal state subsidies.

The three Middle Eastern carriers – Qatar Airways, plus United Arab Emirates-based Etihad Airways and Emirates – have denied those accusations.

“Today’s agreement by the State of Qatar is a strong first step in a process for commercial transparency and accountability, and we remain committed to working with the administration to address the harmful trade violations by the United Arab Emirates as well,” Delta Chief Executive Officer Ed Bastian said in a statement.

The US carriers have been pushing the Trump administration to take the significant step of challenging the three Gulf carriers’ conduct under its bilateral Open Skies agreements, but the administration has said its goal is to maintain the framework of the flight pacts.

The US Airlines for Open Skies Coalition, which includes smaller airlines that campaign against protectionist policies in the industry and has sided with the Gulf carriers in the dispute, also claimed Tuesday’s announcement as a success.

“We appreciate the administration’s strong support for maintaining the global framework of US Open Skies Agreements, which will continue American aviation leadership and economic growth,” the coalition, which includes FedEx, Atlas Air , JetBlue Airways, and Hawaiian Airlines, said in a statement.

Maybe this will be the kicker for increased regulation before one of these damned things brings down a passenger plane.

Helicopter crashes after manoeuvres to 'avoid... DJI Phantom drone'

Incident reported to local cops and Federal Aviation Authority

By Gareth Corfield 16 Feb 2018 at 14:39

A helicopter has crashed after reportedly manoeuvring hard to avoid a "DJI Phantom quadcopter," in what could be the first confirmed aircraft accident involving a drone.
The crash was first reported this week by telly station
Live 5 News, in South Carolina, USA< which saw a copy of a police report stating that a Robinson R22 helicopter struck a tree and landed on its side.

The Robinson, which is a typical basic training light helicopter, was being flown by an instructor and a student. The instructor reportedly told police that his student was practising hover taxi manoeuvring over rough ground on Daniel Island, a peninsula near the southeast US coast port city of Charleston.

During a turn, the instructor reportedly claimed he saw a white "DJI Phantom quadcopter" headed towards them. He took control of the helicopter, allegedly to evade the drone, but the aircraft's tail rotor struck a small tree. Though he got the helo down onto the rear of its landing skids, it then turned over.

The Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) is said to be investigating.

Though aviators and responsible drone operators alike have repeatedly warned for years that flying drones near other aircraft will lead to a disaster, and while several
idiots have done that exact thing, this appears to be the first crash caused as a result of a drone flying near a manned aircraft, if the instructor's statement to police is accurate.

It is important to note that crashing a helicopter is a very expensive business that will not endear the pilots to the aircraft's owners or insurers. There was no information to suggest whether the local police had verified the presence of the drone, or identified its operator.

Bloomberg News quoted a statement from drone maker DJI which said: "DJI is trying to learn more about this incident and stands ready to assist investigators."
FAA investigations normally produce a detailed report of all the circumstances leading up to aviation incident. ®

Emirates to launch Auckland flights via Bali

DUBAI, 4 hours, 53 minutes ago

Dubai-based airline Emirates has announced its plan to launch a new daily service from Dubai to Auckland via the island of Bali, Indonesia, starting from June 14.

The new service will offer global travellers a total of three daily services to New Zealand, complementing Emirates’ existing non-stop daily service between Dubai and Auckland and its current daily A380 service between Dubai and Christchurch via Sydney. Travellers will also enjoy a choice of three daily services between Dubai to Bali in the summer, as the new flight adds to Emirates’ two existing daily services which are currently operated by a Boeing 777 300-ER in a two-class configuration.

Emirates’ new Dubai-Bali-Auckland flight will provide the only year-round non-stop daily service between Auckland and Bali, giving passengers an opportunity to visit and/or stopover in one of the most popular islands in Indonesia. The airline will operate a 777-300ER on the route, offering 8 seats in First, 42 seats in Business and 304 seats in Economy class, as well as 20 tonnes of belly-hold cargo capacity.

Sir Tim Clark, president Emirates Airline, said: “We’re pleased to introduce additional capacity to serve the strong demand for travel to Bali, and to Auckland. We are confident that our year-round service between Auckland and Bali will be well received by our customers, not only in New Zealand and Indonesia, but also from our global network particularly from markets like the UK, Europe and the Middle East.”

With its spectacular mountains and picturesque beaches, Bali is considered to be a world leading tourist destination, welcoming more than 4.5 million foreign tourist arrivals in 2016, including over 40,500 New Zealanders. Emirates’ new service will add to Bali’s global connectivity, further stimulating the island’s economic and tourism growth.

Flight details and connections to Emirates’ global network and beyond

Apart from the opportunity for a stopover in Bali, the new service will provide excellent connections to/from London and other major European cities. The southbound flight, EK 450, will depart Dubai at 06:55, arriving at Denpasar (Bali) at 20:20 local time, before flying on to Auckland at 22:00, arriving in New Zealand’s biggest city at 10:00, the following day

Northbound, the new service will depart Auckland as flight EK 451 at the convenient time of 12:40, arriving in Denpasar at 17:55 local time. It will depart Denpasar at 19:50, arriving in Dubai just after midnight at 00:45, connecting to flights to many of the points beyond on the extensive Emirates and flydubai partnership network. –TradeArabia News Service

Two Dutchmen sitting next to the flatulent passenger reportedly asked the man to stop, but he refused and continued to break wind aboard the Transavia Airlines flight from Dubai to Amsterdam Schiphol.
Despite a warning from the pilot, a fight between the men then broke out, causing the flight to be diverted to Vienna Airport.

Police boarded the plane with dogs and removed two sisters and the two men after the pilot made a report about ‘passengers on the rampage’.
The women, who are sisters, that were removed from the flight are now taking the airline to court claiming they were not involved in the alternation
