Airbus has landed the aerospace industry’s biggest-ever deal by number of planes, with an agreement to sell 430 jets worth up to $50bn (£38bn) to budget airlines.

The preliminary deal for A320neo narrowbody jets was signed at the Dubai airshow on Wednesday and offers a major boost to Airbus, which has lagged arch-rival Boeing in deals this year.

But Boeing immediately hit back with a provisional agreement to sell 175 planes to budget airline flydubai. Including options to buy a further 50 planes, that deal could be worth $27bn at list prices.

Expectation was they would sign a 30 x A380 deal with Emirates, but nothing - Emirates reportedly require guarantees the A380 will stay in production for another 10 years. But with Emirates shaping up as possibly the only ongoing customer, that might not happen. So we may have witnessed the beginning of the end of the A380. Hope was it would struggle on until new engine tech made a 'NEO' version possible.

What saddens me is the 787 seems to be winning the war against the A350. Bean counters winning out over passenger comfort.

Well I've only flown the Qatari screamliner but it seemed pretty comfortable to me.

I would expect most of them to be able to do that when there are no passengers, luggage and cargo on board tbh.

After all, they're designed to fly comfortably on one engine if need be.

That wasn't a commercial flight. That video clip was taken at Farnborough air show last year.

Korat airport operates first chartered flights

NAKHON RATCHASIMA, 18 November 2017 (NNT) – Nakhon Ratchasima airport has operated its first chartered flights to accommodate a meeting of chambers of commerce and planned to operate new regular flights to Chiang Mai and Phuket next month.

Department of Airports Director-General Darun Saengchai revealed the agency had approved the operation of a chartered flight No. E3 7511 by New Gen Airways to fly from Nakhon Ratchasima to Surat Thani on 17 November 2017 in order to transport attendees of the 35th National Chambers of Commerce conference in the southern province.

The flight, operated by a Boeing 737-800 aircraft, is considered the inaugural service of a charter flight from Nakhon Ratchasima airport.

New Gen Airways has also requested for the license to operate another chartered flight from Surat Thani to Nakhon Ratchasima on 19 November 2017. The airline will open regular daily flights between Nakhon Ratchasima - Chiang Mai - Nakhon Ratchasima, and Nakhon Ratchasima - Phuket - Nakhon Ratchasima starting on 3 December 2017.

Nakhon Ratchasima airport can accommodate 300 passengers at its terminal and can accommodate three Boeing 737 aircraft at a time.

Has anyone been to the new terminal 2 at Korea's Incheon airport? I just got a message from Korean Air that we will be departing from there. We have a very short layover just wondering approximately how long to get to the gates from a connecting flight both are Korean air. I was really used to the old set up.

Niki Austrian airline failure strands many passengers

The Austrian airline Niki has grounded its planes, stranding thousands of passengers, after filing for insolvency protection.
The company has about 20 planes serving resorts in southern Europe and north Africa.

It was founded by Niki Lauda, the Austrian ex-F1 racing champion, but he sold it to Air Berlin in 2011. Austria's Der Standard daily says about 5,000 Niki passengers are stuck abroad and need to be brought back to Austria.
Most of the stranded passengers are in Majorca. Austrian authorities are now trying to get them transferred to other flights.

On Wednesday the German carrier Lufthansa scrapped plans to buy Niki. Earlier, the European Commission had expressed "deep competition concerns" about a possible Lufthansa purchase of 81 Air Berlin and Niki jets. It said that would limit choice for air travellers in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Loss-making Air Berlin turned insolvent in August, after its biggest shareholder, Etihad Airways, withdrew financial support.

According to Der Standard, about 40,000 people are booked to fly home on Niki during the next two weeks. The airline was planning to operate at least 145 flights per week during the winter holiday season, from Austria, Switzerland and Germany. The assets of Air Berlin, Germany's second largest airline, are being sold off.

The European Commission has approved EasyJet's purchase of some Air Berlin assets, ruling that there is no breach of EU competition policy. They include slots at Berlin Tegel airport and at some destination airports, as well as some aircraft equipment.

Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson airport power cut grounds flights

A power cut at Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson international airport has led to the suspension of outgoing flights and major delays.


It is not clear what caused the blackout, but firefighters say they are on standby as power company officials try to fix the problem.
Flights scheduled to arrive from other airports are being diverted elsewhere or held at their departure airport.


The outage has caused delays at security checkpoints and on runways.


In a statement, the airport said they sustained a power outage shortly after 13:00 (18:00 GMT) on Sunday and were investigating its cause.


The Federal Aviation Administration said flights bound for Atlanta had been being grounded and equipment in the terminals had stopped working.


Georgia Power, which provides electricity to the airport, said the cause of the power cut was not immediately known.


"Crews in the field are working with the airport to determine the cause as quickly as possible," the company said on Twitter.


Images shared on social media showed passengers waiting in darkness.


Hartsfield-Jackson is the world's busiest airport, handling more than 250,000 passengers and nearly 2,500 arrivals and departures every day.


Atlanta is located within a two-hour flight of 80% of the US population, making the city a major port of entry into the US and a common stopover for travel within the country.

The Atlanta airport, which is the busiest in the world, lost power earlier Sunday, leaving passengers stranded on planes and inside terminals. The airport canceled nearly 700 flights as a result, and delayed almost 600 others, NBC News reported.

^ That's massive, I'll bet even services on the other side of the world are affected by that. Though I don't think Delta fly to Thailand any longer do they?

I passed through ATL once, what an amazing airport - first time I had visited such a 'hub'. People scrambling in all directions, long security lines. More Delta tails than you could poke a stick at, and very few other airlines.

Suvarnabhumi Airport embraces Christmas spirit to enhance travel experience

BANGKOK, 26th December 2017 (NNT) – Suvarnabhumi Airport is decking its passenger teminal with Christmas decorations to bring joy to air travellers during the festive season.

The Director of Suvarnabhumi Airport, Sirote Duangrat, and the Commissioner of the Immigration Bureau, Pol. Lt. Gen. Sutthiphong Wongpin, jointly presided over the opening ceremony of the "Joy to the World, Happy New Year 2018" at the International Departure Hall on the fourth floor.

Mr. Sirote said the International Departure Hall is decorated with large Christmas trees and lighting displays, under the gingerbread house theme. A photo corner has been set up at the Domestic Arrival Hall on the second floor. Christmas stickers and decors can be seen in other areas of the airport.

During the Christmas and New Year's holidays, air travellers are advised are advised to arrive at the airport three hours before their international flights and two hours before their domestic flights. Even fast track was rammed when I landed on 29th December, but some bint, obviously swayed by my devastating good looks and smart dress, beckoned me round the corner and sent me through the Diplomatic channel.

Bless 'er.

Coming out was busy as well, but that was more down to the detailed security than anything. Belt, shoes, etc.

However, it still amazes me that most people are too stupid to save a bit of time by having their boarding card ready at their passport details page when going to the gate though.

The next time someone says to you they had a "shit flight"....

A plane carrying more than 200 passengers from Chicago to Hong Kong was diverted to Alaska after two of the aircraft's toilets were vandalised with excrement, officials said.
The United Airlines flight was forced to make an unscheduled landing in Anchorage on Thursday evening due to a "passenger smearing faeces everywhere".
Police said the man, a US resident of Vietnamese origin, made no threats.
It is not clear what led to the episode taking place.
"We received a report of a passenger who had messed up the bathrooms with his own faeces," Anchorage Airport police spokesman Lt Joe Gamache said.
The passenger, a 22-year-old whose name has not been released, was co-operative and faced "no appropriate charges for anything criminal", Lt Gamache added.


The man, who made no threats and did not try to interfere with the flight crew, was handcuffed by police at Anchorage International Airport and escorted off the plane.
Police told Anchorage TV station KTUU that he was taken to a hospital for a mental health assessment after being interviewed through a translator.
United Airlines said in a statement that flight UA895 was carrying 245 people when it was diverted because of "a disruptive passenger".
Hotel accommodation was provided for those on board, the statement added.

184 Airbus A320s ordered by China for 2019, 2020 deliveries - French official


BEIJING (Reuters) - The Chinese order for 184 Airbus A320 aircraft that French President Emmanuel Macron said would be finalised soon are new purchases that have not yet been publicly announced, a French presidency official said on Wednesday.
“These are orders that had never been announced and which were not part of the Merkel package,” the official said, adding the planes would be delivered in 2019 and 2020.
Macron earlier on Wednesday disclosed the orders and said there were “ambitions” to sell A350 and A380 planes to China “in the weeks or months to come”.
