NokAir Flight Makes Emergency Landing After Engine Fire

BANGKOK – A NokAir plane made an emergency landing at Sakon airport in Thailand after flames were seen coming from one of its two engines and the propeller stopped turning shortly after take-off.


Flight DD9407, a Bombardier Q400 carrying 84 passengers, left Sakon Nakhon airport about 3.10pm yesterday, due to arrive at Don Mueang airport at 4.35pm.


A few minutes later it suddenly turned back to Sakon Nakhon airport and made an emergency landing. Some passengers were transferred to another flight heading for Don Mueang late on Sunday night.


Passengers on the aborted flight took videos of the failing engine and the landing and posted them on social media.


One passenger wrote on his Facebook account that he saw flames coming from the engine exhaust on two occasions before the propeller stopped turning.


Nok Air had technicians check the defective plane at Sakon Nakhon airport and used another aircraft for scheduled flights between the northeastern province and Bangkok on Monday.


The airline has apologised to its customers.

THAI sets waistline limit for passengers on 787-9 Dreamliners

Thai Airways International has banned passengers with over 56-inch waistline and passengers with kids on their laps from Business Class seating on its Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner.
The new regulation on oversized passengers was announced by THAI’s Corporate Image and Social Responsibility Division this week.


Flight Lieutenant Pratana Patanasiri, THAI Vice President, Aviation Safety, Security & Standards Department, clarified in the announcement today (March 16) that THAI has taken delivery of two Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircrafts to its service fleet since September last year.


He said that the aircraft manufacturer has fixed airbag in seat belt on Business Class seats. With this latest version of seatbelt, passengers with over 56 inches waist could not fasten the belt safely.


Therefore it is necessary for the company to abide by the safety standard rule strictly by not allowing passengers with waistline of over 56 inches and passengers travelling with infants on their laps to book the business class seats of the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircrafts, he said.


THAI insisted that the seat belt meets aviation safety standard required by the US Federal Aviation Administration.

The first non-stop scheduled flight from Australia to the UK has landed in London – early – after a 17 hour, five minute journey across 9,300 miles (14,875km) from Perth.

Qantas flight QF9, a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner with more than 230 passengers and crew on board, touched down at 5.03am at Heathrow on a chilly Sunday morning to a welcome from ground staff.


The landing marked the first commercial passenger jet journey direct between Australia and Europe and has been described as a “game-changer” by some in the aviation industry.

The Dreamliner, which Qantas says has 20% better fuel efficiency than similar-sized aircraft, covered the 14,875km with no major dramas.

Passengers did have to endure a period of some turbulence as the plane skirted Cyclone Marcus, a storm off the west coast of Australia, shortly after take-off.

QF9 departed Perth at approximately 6.57pm local time with the company CEO, Alan Joyce, the Australian trade and tourism minister Steve Ciobo and pack of journalists on board.

On arrival at Heathrow the plane was greeted by parade of vehicles on the tarmac with lights flashing.

After touchdown Captain Lisa Norman, who was one of four working pilots on board, said: “I would like to welcome you to the history book of aviation.

“The world has been watching us today. Thank you for being part of something so magical and so special.”

Bangkok - Mae Hong Son inaugural flight takes off

MAE HONG SON, 25th March 2018 (NNT) – The Minister of Transport has officiated the inaugural flight from Bangkok Don Muang Airport to Mae Hong Son, expanding transport capacity to accommodate growing number of passengers.

Minister of Transport Arkhom Termpittayapaisith has presided over the opening ceremony of the inaugural flight between Bangkok and Mae Hong Son of Nok Air held at Mae Hong Son Airport.

Nok Air operates 3-weekly flights between Bangkok Don Muang Airport and Mae Hong Son every Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday, using a 72-seater ATR 72 aircraft.

The opening of this new passenger route goes in keeping with Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha initiation to promote tourism and generate more income to villagers, while providing greater connectivity to tourists, businesspersons, and Mae Hong Son locals.

Mae Hong Son Airport is now connected to Chiang Mai with Bangkok Airways' daily flights and the new flights to Bangkok by Nok Air. The airport now serves 10 flights per week, expected to bring at least 20,000 tourists to the province.

The Department of Airports will be deploying special work measures during Songkran holidays to accommodate passengers and ensuring their safety.

Transport Ministry re-certifies two more airlines with ICAO standards

BANGKOK, 28 March 2018 (NNT) – The Ministry of Transport has granted Air Operator Certificate to two more airlines in accordance with the International Civil Aviation Organization's standards.

Transport Minister Arkhom Termpittayapaisith presided over the granting ceremony for Air Operator Certificate (AOC) to AC Aviation and VIP Jets which provide charter passenger flights.

The new AOCs have been granted as part of the campaign to re-certify Thai airlines in keeping with the ICAO regulations. Sixteen airlines have been granted with new AOCs so far.

Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) Director Chula Sukmanop said the CAAT has ensured all sectors in Thai aviation will adhere to the ICAO standards, and promote the enhancement in the country's aviation industry, including the manufacturing and maintenance in order to make Thailand an aviation and airline maintenance hub in the future.

Chinese airline operates new flight to Chiang Mai

CHIANG MAI, 5th April 2018 (NNT) – Chiang Mai Airport now serves a new air route to Xishuangbanna, China, with a new scheduled service operated by Ruili Airlines.

The Deputy Governor of Chiang Mai, Krit Thanavanich, said Chiang Mai Airport on Wednesday (April4th) welcomed the inaugural flight from Jinghong Airport in Xishuangbanna, operated by Ruili Airlines.

The new air route is a part of the expansion plan of Ruili Airlines, a Chinese carrier based in Kunming, China, to operate flights between Xishuangbanna - Chiang Mai, and Xishuangbanna - Chiang Rai, due to the increasing demands among Thai, Chinese, and international tourists.

Ruili Airlines now operates flight DR 5359 from Jinghong Airport to Chiang Mai every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday using a 144-seater Boeing 737-700 aircraft. The flight Isaiah scheduled to arrive at Chiang Mai Airport at 6 p.m., and depart Chiang Mai Airport at 8 p.m.

The Deputy Governor added that the new air connection will help further promote cooperations in tourism, trade, business, industry, and education sectors, and further enhance the sister city relations between Xishuangbanna and Chiang Mai.

The lack of an A330neo order combined with the cancelation of American’s A350 order is a major blow to Airbus in the post-Leahy era.In a release to investors, American touted the Dreamliner order as part of its strategy to simplify its fleet in an effort to reduce costs. The 47 aircraft ordered nearly equals the amount of Airbus A330s (24) and 767s (24) that remain in the American fleet. The 787 will replace both aircraft types in American’s fleet and replace older 777 aircraft.“We have two excellent partners in Boeing and Airbus and our relationship with both manufacturers goes back many years. Both offer specific aircraft that provide us with the right lift on specific missions across our global network,” said President Robert Isom. “This was a difficult decision between the Boeing 787 and the Airbus A350 and A330neo and we thank both manufacturers for their aggressive efforts to earn more of American’s business. Airbus to put sleeping berths in cargo holds

European aircraft giant will join Zodiac Aerospace to set up sleeper compartments by 2020


The European aircraft giant Airbus has announced plans for sleeping facilities for passengers in the cargo hold of planes that could be operating in A330 wide-body jets from 2020.


The sleeper compartments “would fit inside the aircraft’s cargo compartment”, said Airbus and Zodiac Aerospace, which is a subsidiary of the French aerospace company Safran.


The modules “will be easily interchangeable with regular cargo containers”.


“Airlines will initially be able to choose from a catalogue of certified solutions by 2020 on A330” for the sleeper pods. The possibility of fitting them into A350 XWB airliners is also being looked at.


Airbus and Zodiac said the sleeping berths would not only improve passenger comfort but would let airlines add value for their commercial operations.


“This approach to commercial air travel is a step change towards passenger comfort,” said Geoff Pinner, the head of Airbus’s cabin and cargo program.


“We have already received very positive feedback from several airlines on our first mock-ups.”


Christophe Bernardini, head of Zodiac’s aerospace cabin division, said the project “reaffirms our expertise in lower-deck solutions. An improved passenger experience is today a key element of differentiation for airlines.”


In November 2016 Air France-KLM had put forward the idea of sleeping berths for passengers in economy class, either in the hold or above the cabin in aircraft of the group’s new low-cost subsidiary, Joon.

All alcohol bought at airport shops could be placed in sealed bags in a crackdown on disruption by drunken passengers.

The measure may be used to enforce a possible ban on travellers drinking their own alcohol on flights, a Government document reveals.
Ministers are also considering introducing tougher penalties for drunkenness on aircraft and overhauling licensing laws for airside premises in England and Wales.
The Government set out the proposals in a recent preliminary document as it develops its Aviation Strategy.


More than one in six people (18%) who have flown in the past three years have witnessed aggressive or drunken behaviour on board, according to the Civil Aviation Authority.
Some 420 disruptive passenger incidents were reported to the regulator in 2017.
The real extent of the problem could be more serious as many incidents are not recorded.
Last month an easyJet flight from Manchester to Paphos in Cyprus was diverted to offload four women after a group were drinking, swearing and threatening passengers.
In August a mid-air brawl involving men and women broke out on a Ryanair flight from Newcastle to Alicante in Spain.
The carrier claimed the incident demonstrated the need for a two-drink limit per passenger at airports.
Sealed bags are currently only used for airport alcohol purchases by passengers taking multiple flights to enable them to pass through additional security checks.
Existing laws prohibit a person being drunk on an aircraft, with a maximum punishment of two years in prison and an unlimited fine.
But there is no ban on passengers consuming their own alcohol while they fly, although this is a policy of UK airlines.
In the US, only alcohol served by cabin crew can legally be drunk on a plane.
A recent report by a House of Lords committee recommended that the Licensing Act 2003 should be extended to airside premises at airports in England and Wales to give licensing authorities greater oversight.
Government officials are considering the impact of this on passenger behaviour.
The Aviation Strategy will be put to public consultation in the autumn, with the final version published early next year.
A spokesman for Airlines UK, the industry association representing UK-registered carriers, said its members were doing “everything they can” to tackle the problem of disruptive passengers, including supporting a voluntary code of conduct.
He described the introduction of sealed bags as “a really interesting idea” and welcomed the Government’s decision to consider “closing the licensing loophole”.
A survey of 1,874 people commissioned by Airlines UK found that 80% believe airport shops and bars which sell alcohol should be subjected to the same licensing requirements as those in towns and cities.
A further poll of 103 MPs found that 63% agreed with this point of view.
