MrsQ: 'Direct Flight' means that there's no change of planes although the flight might have a scheduled flight on the way...

e.g. Chiang Mai - Tokyo is shown as a direct flight although it stops in Bangkok on the way...

Airline parlance uses 'non-stop' flight for a flight with no stops and passengers are often confused...

Just a quick note re Swapypoon.

In the Thai Lounge for the past two hours (Etihad use this lounge now and it sucks - I cannot believe that someone paying THAI 10K sterling for a first class ticket would be happy with a lounge in the airline's hub airport that doesn't serve wine, champagne or any meaningful hot food).

Anyway - looking at the screens, about 1/5 of tonight's flights are either cancelled or delayed. So obviously not 'normal' yet...

    Hi

I think there are some people around here, who know about air travel.

Had a short vacation trip to Beijing and Shanghai with my wife flying China Air. The plane to Beijing was a 747 but with a configuration I have not seen before.

The passenger compartment ended just behind the wings. The whole last section was missing. The area was shut off with a permanent wall. Only one door to the back that could not be opened.

Are those mixed passenger and freight planes or what would be the reason for that?

Yep used to fly TAAC Angolan Airways from Paris to Luanda in a 747/Combi. Before they were purchased by TAAC I am sure they belonged to Singapore Airlines.
Any way the less said about TAAC the better. Fly TAAC then you will really find out adrenalin is yellow!!

I eventually, after many days of trying, got through to them on the phone today.

They wouldn't give me a refund for the ticket to Bangkok from Phnom Penh that was cancelled on the 27th, but I have been credited the full amount.

Have to book a flight within the next 90 days to get the credit.

I have no problem with AirAsia, Ive flown heaps of times with them and for the price its great, cant complain and people that do shit me.

As I said, tried to change my flights on line, it wont do it and tells me to ring there office in Malaysia, impossible to get through busy all the time.

Fok it, I'll buy another ticket and change this one once I'm in KL for a future flight latter in the year, no problem sorted.

    HK to Phuket flights increased
Asia Property Report - January 05 - News

Dragonair will add an additional two flights per week between Phuket and Hong Kong Next year.

The airline, part of Hong Kong-based Cathay Pacific, told a Phuket news site of the plans, which will continue as scheduled despite the dramatic reduction of visitors after last month´s anti-government protestors at Bangkok´s airport.

The plan to increase flights will go ahead despite a massice reduction in visitors to Thailand following the closure of Bankok airports by anti-government protestors.

The flights are expected to start in March, the site reported.

Incident: British Airways B744 at Bangkok on Jan 5th 2009, multiple bird strikes on landing
By Simon Hradecky, created Saturday, Jan 10th 2009 14:05Z, last updated Saturday, Jan 10th 2009 14:07Z

A British Airways Boeing 747-400, registration G-CIVY performing flight BA-10 from Sydney,NS (Australia) to Bangkok (Thailand) and further on to London Heathrow,EN (UK), struck multiple birds while landing in Bangkok.

No injuries occured, however the fuselage received significant damage.

The onward flight to London (scheduled to depart Jan 6th just past midnight) had to be cancelled, the passengers were rebooked onto other flights.

G-CIVY was ferried to British Airways' maintenance base at Cardiff on Jan 8th at a maximum cruise level of FL260 (to reduce strain on the fuselage due to compression at higher flight levels).

Commission updates the list of airlines banned from European airspace
    Brussels, 08 April 2009

The European Commission today adopted the update of the so-called blacklist of airlines that are banned from flying into the European Union due to safety concerns. The Commission has imposed a ban on six airlines from Kazakhstan, one airline certified in Thailand, one additional Ukrainian air carrier and on operations of all carriers certified in Benin.

"The Commission will continue to actively pursue a dialogue with everyone involved in aviation to ensure that all aircraft and air carriers conform to internationally required levels of air safety. Air passengers are entitled to feel safe and be safe when their plane takes off," said Antonio Tajani, Commission Vice-President in charge of transport.

The new list, which replaces the previous one published in November 2008, can be consulted on the Commission’s website[1]. Following the unanimous opinion of the Air Safety Committee, the Commission updated the list and decided to expand the list and impose an operating ban for safety reasons on the following air carriers:
    • Air Company Kokshetau, ATMA Airlines, Berkut Air, East Wing, Sayat Air and Starline KZ (Kazakhstan)
    • One Two Go Airlines (Thailand)
    • Motor Sich Airlines(Ukraine)
    • All airlines certified in the Republic of Benin on the basis of the negative results of an audit by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).
The Commission noted good progress in relation to the measures taken by Angola in order to improve the safety situation. In particular, it took note of the progress report drawn up by the aviation authorities of Angola on the implementation of corrective actions following the visit of a team of European experts in February 2008 and the publication of the ICAO safety audit report in October 2008.

A report of the visit of a European team of experts to Indonesia in February 2009 showed considerable improvements. The Commission will continue close consultations with the aviation authorities with a view to re-assessing the safety situation at the next meeting of the Air Safety Committee.

Hence from today the Community list imposes a ban on:
    • All carriers from Angola, Benin, Equatorial Guinea, Indonesia, the Kyrgyz Republic, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Swaziland, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Gabon save for Gabon Airlines and Afrijet, which have exemptions for a small number of aircraft.
    • Sixteen individual carriers:
    • Afghanistan – Ariana Afghan Airlines
    • Cambodia - Siem Reap Airways International
    • Democratic People's Republic of Korea - Air Koryo
    • Kazakhstan - Air Company Kokshetau, ATMA Airlines, Berkut Air, East Wing, Sayat Air, Starline KZ
    • Rwanda - Silverback Cargo Freighters
    • Sudan - Air West
    • Thailand - One Two Go Airlines
    • Ukraine - Motor Sich Airlines, Ukraine Cargo Airways, Ukraine Mediterranean Airlines and Volare Aviation
