Australian airline Qantas ``piggybacks`` Air NZ plane
    2008/10/30

A plane from the Australian airline Qantas ``piggybacked`` an Air New Zealand flight across the Pacific Ocean overnight, after its weather radar stopped working.

WELLINGTON, Oct. 29 (Xinhua) -- The Air New Zealand flight was three hours out of Los Angeles, and about 35 km from the Qantas plane, when the Australian captain called on the radio to ask for help, The Daily Telegraph in Sydney reported on Wednesday.

The planes tracked each other closely as weather updates from the Air New Zealand flight were relayed by radio to the Qantas plane.

A Qantas spokesman said the weather antenna wasn't working to the "full satisfaction" of the crew.

The 280 passengers were not in danger and the flight continued in safety to New Zealand, the spokesman said.

"They chose the safest option to divert to Auckland, which had preferable weather to other diversion options, coupled with the fact the Air New Zealand plane was there to provide guidance," said the spokesman.

"The aircraft were vertically separated at all times and governed by air traffic control," he added.

By the time the planes arrived in Auckland, a replacement antenna had been flown across the Tasman from Sydney.

With repairs complete, the flight arrived in Sydney shortly before midday Wednesday, four hours behind schedule.

The Qantas spokesman said the exact cause of the faulty weather antenna was not yet known.

I agree. Things like this probably happen with other airlines from time to time and go uneported. By reporting any and every incident, however minor, the press can give the impression that there is a "problem" with Qantas.

This is quite a comman occurance, Wide Body aircraft normally have a dual weather radar system installed. The problem is that there is only one nose on an aircraft so without serious modifications you can only install a single antenna, lose the antenna and you lose both systems. The main problems are the drive motors, there are options to install redundant motors out there, but few airlines have taken them. All this being said the aircraft was perfectly safe, with all the modern tracking devices installed no problems at all. Believe it or not there is a great deal of "inter-airlines" chat that goes on up there especially about weather. I agree with MeMock on the Media hype.......

    Siem Reap Airways blacklisted
    Tue, Nov 18, 2008

PHNOM PENH - THE European Commission has added Cambodia's Siem Reap Airways to a safety blacklist that bars carriers from flying to the 27-nation bloc, a statement said on Monday.

The executive branch of the European Union issues periodic lists of airlines from around the world that it says do not meet its safety standards and cannot travel to EU countries.

'The commission has imposed an operating ban on the main air carrier from Cambodia, Siem Reap Airways International', the EC said in a statement on its website.

'The airline does not operate in compliance with the Cambodian safety regulations nor does it meet the standards of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO),' it said.

'Significant concerns have also been expressed by ICAO with regard to the ability of the Cambodian civil aviation authorities to implement and enforce the international safety standards', said the commission.

Siem Reap Airways and Cambodian aviation officials could not immediately be reached for comment.

Siem Ream Airways is a subsidiary of Bangkok Airways International.

It is licensed by the Cambodian government to operate domestic services between Phnom Penh and the tourist hub Siem Reap - gateway to the Angkor Wat temples - but does not operate directly to Europe.

Interesting comment on their 'wet lease' arrangement...
PHNOM PENH, Nov. 18 (Xinhua) -- Siem Reap Airways has responded to an European Commission ban on its planes flying to European countries by saying the order did not apply to its aircraft, national media reported Tuesday. The EC last week added the local carrier, which only flies regional routes, to its list of blacklisted airlines, citing its failure to comply with international and Cambodian civil aviation standards, the Phnom Penh Post said.
But Lao Santi, general manager of Siem Reap Airways, said the ban applied only to Siem Reap Airways aircraft registered in Cambodia, according to the Post.
"As a matter of fact, none of the aircraft operating (Siem Reap Airways) services have been registered in the Kingdom, as they are entirely operated on a wet-lease basis." he said in a statement.
A wet-lease is an arrangement between two airlines whereby the lesser provides the aircraft, crew, maintenance and insurance (ACMI) to the lessee.
The statement said that the EC exempted airlines listed in "Annex A" of the ban that operate on a wet-lease basis.
"Air carriers listed in the Annex A could be permitted to exercise traffic rights by using wet-leased aircraft of an air carrier which is not subject to an operating ban, provided that the relevant safety standards are complied with," the EC document states.
Siem Reap Airways is a subsidiary of Thailand-based Bangkok Airways and currently offers no air service to European countries.

Air New Zealand jet plunges into Mediterranean Sea

AN Air New Zealand passenger jet has plunged into the Mediterranean Sea off France, killing at least two people.

The wreck of the Airbus A320 has been located off the southern city of Perpignan, where it had been undergoing maintenance.

Rescuers found the bodies of two crew members but five others were missing this morning.

The plane was on a flight to check that it was operating normally when it fell from the sky, said officials in Perpignan.

A surveillance plane, two rescue helicopters and five ships were scouring the seas around the crash site 3.5 nautical miles (2.5km) from the shore.

It's thought five of those on the plane were from New Zealand.

An Air New Zealand pilot, three engineers and a New Zealand Civil Aviation Authority staff member were on board.

The aircraft was owned by Air New Zealand but had been on lease to XL Airways for the past two years.

Air New Zealand chief executive Rob Fyfe said the aircraft was being flown by XL Airways to Frankfurt where it was due to be handed back to Air New Zealand.

Today is the 29th anniversary of Air New Zealand's biggest disaster, when Flight TE901 crashed into Mt Erebus while on a scenic trip over Antarctica. All 257 people on board died.

so technically I suppose it's not an ANZ flight seeing it was leased to XL Airways and being flown by them at the time...

    Not good advertising though...

I've been thinking that QANTAS must be really miffed with the Aussie media who insist on reporting every small incident...other countries and their airlines have 'incidents' every day but they are never reported...seems there's a conspiracy on the part of the media to show QANTAS in a bad light...

Oh for sure, the tall poppy syndrome was in full effect over those last few months. Their in flight service has dropped off significantly over the last few years and perhaps one too many media CEO's got wine spilt on them in first class by incompetent hostesses.

    Thai cuts underperforming flights
    Report by Alex McWhirter
    08/12/2008

Flight operations at Bangkok’s main airport finally returned to normal today (Dec 8). That’s the good news.

The bad news is that the global economic crisis has finally caught up with Thai Airways. With immediate effect it has been forced to cut underperforming flights.

The cutbacks see Thai reduce its operations to a number of cities in mainland Europe and within Asia. From next month they also see Thai withdraw completely from the Bangkok to Johannesburg route.

These flight reductions are likely to inconvenience many passengers. That is because the changes have been made with immediate effect and at the start of the busy travel season between Europe, Asia and Australasia.

In addition, Bangkok is a key aviation hub for the region so passengers might find that their connections are no longer viable.

Full details are only now emerging and the picture is confusing not least because Thai has yet to issue an official statement and not all the changes have been made to Thai’s website and the main GDSs (the major booking systems). Thai’s spokesperson in London could not be reached for comment.

According to the Amadeus GDS, Thai’s service from Bangkok to Frankfurt has been cut from 14 to 10 flights a week, Bangkok-Paris CDG is reduced from seven to five a week while Bangkok-Munich is reduced from seven to four a week.

Some positive news is that Thai’s busy Bangkok-London Heathrow is spared the cutbacks. Thai will continue to operate its twice daily service.
So far it appears that the carrier’s flights from Bangkok to Australia and New Zealand will be unchanged.

South Africa will lose its link with Bangkok on January 16 when Thai terminates its three times a week service. It’s understood the route is being cut partly because of the global financial climate and partly because of the weak Rand which has hit Thai’s earnings in that country.

This link is significant because there are precious few air links between South Africa and SE Asia. Moreover Thai was the only Star Alliance carrier to offer a first class cabin and, as a result, it was popular with premium ticket round-the-world passengers.

Airline staff have begun advising passengers of the changes but it will be a long process because so many flights are involved. In addition for those passengers who booked online there’s always the risk their advisory emails will end up in the spam bin.

So we recommend that Thai passengers with flights in the coming months recheck their bookings.

Because in your world everything is fine and there is no crisis anywhere, iny any regard. You must be dialling the wrong number because no company has gone bust, no-one has lost any money, nothing has closed. No, no, no.

    Best of luck.

The missus's flight that got in to Swampy at 1am is cancelled, they have moved her to an earlier flight.
I contacted the ticket agent to check and she told me. Not exactly sure when I was going to find out if I hadn't asked.

Is it up to me to check?

Airlines to face US$2.5 bn loss: IATA
    Tue, December 9, 2008 : Last updated 19:24 hours

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) announced its forecast for 2009 showing an industry loss of US$2.5 billion, as the revenue environment is expected to be in the worst condition in 50 years.

All regions, except the US, are expected to report larger losses in 2009 than in 2008.

Industry revenues are expected to decline to US$501 billion. This is a fall of US$35 billion from the US$536 billion in revenues forecasted for 2008. This drop in revenues is the first since the two consecutive years of decline in 2001 and 2002.

Passenger traffic is expected to decline by 3 per cent following growth of 2 per cent in 2008. This is the first decline in passenger traffic since the 2.7 per cent drop in 2001.

Cargo traffic is expected to decline by 5 per cent, following a drop of 1.5 per cent in 2008. Prior to 2008 the last time that cargo declined was in 2001 when a 6 per cent drop was recorded.

The 2009 oil price is expected to average US$60 per barrel (Brent) for a total bill of US$142 billion. This is US$32 billion lower than in 2008 when oil averaged US$100 per barrel (Brent).

"The outlook is bleak. The chronic industry crisis will continue into 2009 with US$2.5 billion in losses. We face the worst revenue environment in 50 years," said Giovanni Bisignani, IATA's Director General and CEO.

IATA also updated its forecast for 2008 to a loss of US$5.0 billion. This is slightly improved from the US$5.2 billion loss projected in the Association's September forecast primarily as a result of the rapid decline in fuel prices.

The reduction in industry losses from 2008 to 2009 is primarily due to a shift in the results of North American carriers.

Carriers in this region were hardest hit by high fuel prices with very limited hedging and are expected to post the largest industry losses for 2008 at US$3.9 billion.

An early 10 per cent domestic capacity reduction in response to the fuel crisis has given the region's carriers a head-start in combating the recession-led fall in demand.

The lack of hedging is now allowing the region's carriers to take full advantage of rapidly declining spot fuel prices.

As a result, North American carriers are expected to post a small profit of US$300 million in 2009.

"North America will be the only region in the black, but the expected US$300 million profit is less than 1 per cent of their revenue. 2009 will be another tough year for everyone," said Bisignani.

I spoke with the travel agent yesterday.

This is what I can gather.

Thai flying from Seoul to Bangkok have canceled their late night flight - 9pm-arriving in BKK 1:30am.

The last flight appears to be 17:30 getting into swampy at 11:30

Here is the interesting bit. They are classing this as a direct flight. Even though it stops in Taiwan or Hong Kong for 45minutes or so. THere is no plane change - dunno if this is normal or not.

From what I understand there are no more non-stop flights to Bangkok anymore. Everything has a layover for ~1 hour in HK or TW (never knew TW had two airports till yesterday).
