Israel blows gates off Iran’s notorious Evin Prison

Jail houses Tehran’s political prisoners, and is where Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe was held on bogus espionage charges

Israeli forces blew up the gates of Iran’s notorious Evin Prison and struck government buildings across Tehran on Monday in the most direct assault on Iran’s capital since the war began.

Projectiles hit the prison, which houses Iran’s political prisoners, causing damage to parts of it and raising the possibility that dissidents may have been able to escape.

The gates were destroyed in the strike, although Iranian officials said the situation was “currently under control.”

The strike targeted one of the Islamic Republic’s most symbolically important detention facilities, where prominent activists, foreigners, journalists and dissidents have been held for decades.

Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, the British-Iranian dual citizen, was held there for four years on bogus espionage charges.

Israel Katz, the Israeli defence minister, wrote on X that the military “is carrying out strikes of unprecedented force against regime targets and agencies of government repression in the heart of Tehran” as the Iran-Israel war raged for an 11th day.

These included Evin, “which holds political prisoners and regime opponents”, as well as the command centres of the domestic Basij militia and the powerful Revolutionary Guards, he added.

Hopefully those political prisoners have escaped and can now assist with the regime change and internal chaos.

My only fear is that more boat people will wash up on our green and pleasant land.

^ There are plenty of Iranians who speak good English and can claim refugee status.
This bombing of Iran may have some tactical success but is a failure in strategic terms.

Trump and his administration have failed to think stategically. The downfall of the Iran regime is not a good solution. Better the Devil you know etc..

Israel and Trump made the right decision. They can't risk Iran nuking Israel. Even if it was 2 to 5 years away. Nuclear war is something best avoided.

When it comes to foreign policy, we’re a slow study, and have a very poor memory.

rather the UK give refugee status to educated iranian political prisoners than to the grade C swarthy dross from north and central africa, albania, vietnam, afghanistan, iraq and syria that end up polluting our towns, cities, jails, filling up our hospitals, sucking the life out of our benefit and housing systems, cheering on iran and hamas and assaulting our women.

some excitement then in the boring lives of the sandpit tefler community.

    big fuss over nothing.

the silly old mullahs told both qatar and trump what they were going to doing hours before they did it.

loosing off a few rockets was mostly a face saving farce for domestic consumption.

    fuck 'em.

What is the MAGA position? The Republicans seem to be doing a lot of flip flopping. It's not necessarily wrong to change your position. Mr. Trump claimed to be anti-war and anti-abortion when campaigning but that seemed to be political expediency.

Back when I were a lad, if we heard the sirens we'd be outside the pub looking for Patriots.

    These youngsters, honestly...
