World's oldest man dies aged 112 in England

John Tinniswood, an Englishman born the same year the Titanic sank and who survived two world wars and two global pandemics, has died aged 112, Guinness World Records said on Tuesday, months after it recognised him as the world's oldest man.

Tinniswood passed away on Monday at a care home in Southport, northwest England, surrounded by "music and love", his family told Guinness World Records in a statement.

"John had many fine qualities. He was intelligent, decisive, brave, calm in any crisis, talented at maths and a great conversationalist," his family said.

Born in August 1912 in Liverpool, he went on to meet his wife Blodwen at a dance before marrying her in 1942, at the height of World War II when he served in the Royal Army Pay Corps, which was responsible for finances and food supplies.

Tinniswood, who is survived by a daughter, four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren, later worked as an accountant in the oil industry before retiring at age 60. His wife died in 1986.

From the age of 100 to 110 he received a birthday card each year from the late Queen Elizabeth, who was 14 years his junior. She died in 2022.

Besides eating a portion of his favourite food (battered fish and chips) every Friday, Tinniswood followed no special diet.

Guinness World Records said he stayed mentally active, keeping up with the news and managing his own finances, which may have contributed to his longevity.

When Guinness World Records awarded him the title of world's oldest man in April this year, Tinniswood said there was no huge secret to his longevity, insisting it was "just luck".

"You either live long or you live short, and you can't do much about it," he said.

Did this chap have some kind of minor celebrity status in the UK? I wonder who has the title now.

You'd need a decent pension to live to 112.

Scary thought, living that long. I’d think one would have to have good health care and support of family to get there.

I would be happy to live a centenarian's life.

The thing about living in an age of accelerating change is that simply sticking around just to see what happens next on the global stage is enough to make life worth living.

Apollo 9 took humans to the moon on our first extra-planetary expedition when I was 6 weeks old and Apollo 11 landed on the moon 6 months later.

If I get to see humans walk on Mars I will have lived a significantly book-ended life from a human endeavour perspective, I think.

I know Elon wants to get there relatively soon but I am building some contingency padding into his aggressive schedule.

^Elon is on his way in making his own dynasty to rival the Saudi royal family. He has lots of kids from different "baby mamas". He's rich enough to provide from them all but overall he seems a dodgy human, IMHO.

Similar to Armstrong, I also wouldn't want to live that long (centenarian or more). My dad died at 71 and his parents passed at 75 & 72. I hope I take after my dad's side in terms of longevity. My mom's side tended to live until their 80s or 90s. One of my aunts is in her 90s & has dementia - I wouldn't want that for me or my loved ones.

Well, as David has pointed out in Repo, the top 50 are all wimmin.

    This can be explained:

It was said in the 2000s that the first person to live to 150 years old is almost certainly alive, we just don't know what age they are today.

Coincidently, so are all the record holders for humans that can lay the longest poops in the world. Due to extra poop-chute space inside.

    Could be connected.
