US MQ-9 Reaper struck down over Black Sea by Russian Su-27 fighter jet

A Russian Su-27 fighter jet struck the propeller of a US military "Reaper" surveillance drone, causing it to crash into the Black Sea in an incident condemned as "reckless' by the US military.

US MQ-9 Reaper struck down over Black Sea by Russian Su-27 fighter jet-reaper-png

    Key points:

Two Russian fighter jets moved to intercept an unmanned US 'Reaper' drone and one collided with the drone's propeller
US officials say the surveillance drone was conducting 'routine operations' in international airspace
Russia is yet to comment on the incident

Two Russian Su-27 jets carried out the intercept of the American spy drone, before one of them collided with it.

Several times before the collision, the Russian fighter jets dumped fuel on the MQ-9 and flew in front of it in unsafe manoeuvres, the US military said in a statement.

The US said the drone was conducting a routine operation in international airspace when two Russian jets tried to intercept it.

"Our MQ-9 aircraft was conducting routine operations in international airspace when it was intercepted and hit by a Russian aircraft, resulting in a crash and complete loss of the MQ-9," US Air Force General James Hecker, who overseas the US Air Force in the region, said in a statement.

"In fact, this unsafe and unprofessional act by the Russians nearly caused both aircraft to crash."

White House National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby said President Joe Biden was briefed about the incident.

"The State Department will be speaking directly with their Russian counterparts, and expressing our concerns over this unsafe and unprofessional intercept," Mr Kirby said.

While there have been other such intercepts, Mr Kirby said, this one was noteworthy because it caused the downing of a US aircraft.

"So it's unique in that regard," Mr Kirby said, nothing the State Department will reach out and make US concerns over the drone known to Russian officials.

There was no immediate comment from Moscow.

NATO's top military commander briefed allies on the incident.

The US military said the incident followed a pattern of dangerous behaviour by Russian pilots operating near aircraft flown by the US and its allies, including over the Black Sea.

The Black Sea lies between Europe and Asia and is bordered by Russia and Ukraine among other countries.

They probably just dumped fuel and they didn't even have to light it. These drones have a 950 horsepower turboprop that would just suck up the fuel and over rev till it blows or just stalls. This was probably a more passive move than it seems. They could probably fly a ways away. The drone operators probably took a few minutes before they knew what was happening.

"hey this su 27 is flying in front of us. Why is our drone starting to over rev and run like shit?"

With what ? The nose cone of an su 27? The wing? Into a prop with 950 horsepower behind it ? Gtfo

Just added bs from the US MOD but if it happened that way , there will be footage they will release. If no footage , it didn't happen.

The US mod doesn't want the fuel dumping idea to take hold. Because it won't be the last time it happens.

What we know about the U.S.-Russia military air crash

WASHINGTON (AP) — When a Russian fighter jet collided with a large U.S. surveillance drone over the Black Sea on Tuesday, it was a rare but serious incident that triggered a U.S. diplomatic protest and raised concerns about the possibility Russia could recover sensitive technology.

U.S. and Russian officials had conflicting accounts of the collision between the MQ-9 Reaper drone and the Russian Su-27 fighter jet — each blaming the other. But a Pentagon spokesman raised the possibility that the Defense Department could eventually declassify and release video it has of the collision.

Defense officials said the drone has not been recovered. But the Pentagon declined to say whether any effort was underway to gather debris or pieces of the Reaper.

Here’s what’s known — and uncertain — about the crash.

    What the U.S. says happened

The Pentagon and U.S. European Command said that two Russian Su-27 aircraft dumped fuel on the MQ-9, which was conducting a routine surveillance mission over the Black Sea in international airspace. They said the Russian jets flew around and in front of the drone several times for 30 to 40 minutes, and then one of the Russian aircraft “struck the propeller of the MQ-9, causing U.S. forces to have to bring the MQ-9 down in international waters.”

Air Force Gen. James Hecker, commander of U.S. Air Forces Europe and Africa, said that the Russian jet’s actions “nearly caused both aircraft to crash.” Pentagon spokesman Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder said the collision likely also damaged the Russian fighter jet, but the Su-27 was able to land. He would not say where it landed.

The Pentagon said the drone was “well clear” of any Ukrainian territory, but did not provide details. A U.S. defense official said it was operating west of Crimea over the Black Sea. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to provide mission details.

It’s not clear if the collision was an accident or intentional, but both sides agree the Russian aircraft were trying to intercept the drone.

    What Russia says happened

The Russian Defense Ministry said the U.S. drone was flying near the Russian border and intruded in an area that was declared off limits by Russian authorities. It said that the Russian military scrambled fighters to intercept the U.S. drone. It claimed that “as a result of sharp maneuver, the U.S. drone went into uncontrollable flight with a loss of altitude and collided with water surface.”

Russia has declared broad areas near Crimea off limits to flights. Ever since the 2014 annexation of Crimea and long before Russia invaded Ukraine last year, Moscow has charged that U.S. surveillance planes were flying too close to its borders while ignoring the notices issued by Russia.

Nations routinely operate in international airspace and waters, and no country can claim limits on territory outside of its own border.

The ministry said the Russian aircraft were scrambled to intercept the drone but didn’t use their weapons and “didn’t come into contact” with it.

    What is an MQ-9 Reaper?

The MQ-9 Reaper is a large unmanned Air Force aircraft that is remotely operated by a two-person team. It includes a ground control station and satellite equipment and has a 66-foot (20-meter) wingspan. The team includes a rated pilot who is responsible for flying the aircraft and an enlisted aircrew member who is charged with operating the sensors and guiding weapons.

Used routinely during the Iraq and Afghanistan wars for surveillance and airstrikes, the Reaper can be either armed or unarmed. It can carry up to eight laser-guided missiles, including Hellfire missiles and other sophisticated munitions, and can loiter over targets for about 24 hours. It is about 36 feet long, 12 feet high, and weighs about 4,900 pounds (11 meters long, 4 meters high, and 2,200 kilograms). It can fly at an altitude of up to 50,000 feet (15 kilometers) and has a range of about 1,400 nautical miles (2,500 kilometers).

The Reaper, which first began operating in 2007, replaced the Air Force’s smaller Predator drones. Each Reaper costs about $32 million.

    Diplomatic dust-up

The collision triggered a diplomatic protest.

The U.S. State Department summoned Russian Ambassador Anatoly Antonov to a meeting Tuesday with Karen Donfried, the assistant secretary of state for Europe.

“We are engaging directly with the Russians, again at senior levels, to convey our strong objections to this unsafe, unprofessional intercept, which caused the downing of the unmanned U.S. aircraft,” said State Department spokesman Ned Price.

And White House National Security spokesman John Kirby said the U.S. will be “expressing our concerns over this unsafe and unprofessional intercept.”

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin had not talked to his Russian counterpart regarding the incident, Ryder said.

    Has it happened before?

This is not the first time Russian aircraft have flown so close to U.S. aircraft in the Black Sea that it’s prompted the Pentagon to publicly condemn the incident for putting the crews at risk. In 2020, Russian jets crossed in front of a B-52 bomber that was flying over the Black Sea, and flew as close as 100 feet (30 meters) in front of the bomber’s nose, causing turbulence.

Russian jets have also buzzed U.S. warships during exercises in the Black Sea. In 2021, Russian warplanes buzzed the USS Donald Cook, a Navy destroyer, which had been taking part in a major exercise. Until Russia’s invasion last year of Ukraine, U.S. warships more frequently deployed to the Black Sea in response to Russia’s 2014 attack on Crimea.

For the most part, however, military intercepts — either in the air or at sea — are routine and have happened a number of times with Russian aircraft in the Pacific, particularly in the north. Just last month, U.S. fighter jets intercepted two Russian TU-95 bombers in international airspace off Alaska’s coast, and “escorted them” for 12 minutes, according to the Pentagon.

And Russian aircraft have done similar missions, and also buzzed U.S. Navy ships in the Pacific. In most of the cases, the intercepts are deemed safe and professional.

It’s not clear if the Russian pilots were willing to get closer to the Reaper or dump fuel on it because they knew it was unmanned — and therefore there was no risk to an American pilot or crew. The deliberate downing of a manned aircraft — injuring or killing crew members — could be considered an act of war.

Russia comments on US drone crash in Black Sea

No interceptor touched the American spy UAV that was approaching Crimea, Moscow has announced

"The Russian Defense Ministry on Tuesday denied claims by the US military that a Russian interceptor came into contact with the American MQ-9 drone over the Black Sea, causing it to crash.

The UAV was flying towards the Russian border without an active transponder, in clear violation of the restricted area established for the conduct of the special military operation, the ministry said. Two interceptors were dispatched to investigate.

“As a result of sharp maneuvers around 9:30am Moscow time, the MQ-9 unmanned aerial vehicle went into uncontrolled flight, lost altitude, and collided with the water surface. The Russian fighters did not use weapons, did not come into contact with the UAV, and returned safely to their home base,” the defense ministry said in a statement.

Moscow’s comment came after the US European Command (EUCOM) accused the Russian jets of “an unsafe and unprofessional intercept” of the drone. The Americans claimed their spy drone was operating in international airspace when a pair of Su-27 jets appeared, sprayed it with fuel, and “struck the propeller” of the UAV, which caused it to crash into the sea. EUCOM waited almost 12 hours after the incident to comment on it.

The US has admitted to providing Ukraine with intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance information in the conflict against Russia, while insisting it is not a party to the hostilities. US and NATO spy aircraft frequently fly over the Black Sea and approach Crimea, sometimes just before Ukrainian forces launch attacks on the Russian peninsula.

Last week, a US strategic bomber flew a practice run for a missile attack on St. Petersburg, while staying in international, and NATO, airspace.

The Pentagon routinely uses the phrase “unsafe and unprofessional” to describe incidents in which Russian interceptors chase off US drones, spy planes or fighters that come too close to the border."

It appears that NaGaStan armed drone drivers assume no opposition when the flying weapons platform in a war zone.

The are being updated, new drones designed, manufacturers predict availability to deliver circa late 2028 and training upgrades similar.

US drone downing: Russia will try to retrieve remnants of drone

Russia said on Wednesday that it would try to retrieve the remnants of a US drone that crashed into the Black Sea.

The large MQ-9 Reaper drone plunged into the water on Tuesday.

The US said it brought down the damaged drone after it became "unflyable" when a Russian jet clipped its propeller - but Moscow has denied these claims.

Speaking on state television, Russian security council secretary Nikolai Patrushev confirmed Moscow was attempting to find the aircraft.

"I don't know whether we'll be able to retrieve it or not but it has to be done. And we will certainly work on it," Mr Patrushev said.

Senior Washington official John Kirby said the US also wanted to locate the aircraft, but stressed that if Russia beat them to it, "their ability to exploit useful intelligence will be highly minimised".

Speaking to ABC America's morning news program, Good Morning America, he added that there were logistical challenges as it crashed in "very deep water".

US military officials said the incident happened on Tuesday morning and the confrontation lasted around 30-40 minutes.

Several times before the collision, the Russian jets dumped fuel on the drone in a "reckless, environmentally unsound and unprofessional manner", the US said in a statement on Tuesday.

Pentagon spokesman Brig Gen Pat Ryder told reporters the drone was "unflyable and uncontrollable so we brought it down", adding the collision also likely damaged the Russian aircraft.

Russia has denied its two Su-27 fighter jets made any contact with the US drone.

Russia's defence ministry said the drone crashed after a "sharp manoeuvre", and that it was flying with its transponders (communication devices) turned off.

Tensions have risen over the Black Sea ever since Russia's annexation of nearby Crimea in 2014.

And since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the US and the UK have stepped up surveillance flights, though always operating in international airspace.

Ukraine's foreign minister told the BBC incidents such as the downing of a US drone over the Black Sea are inevitable until Russia leaves Crimea.

Describing it as a "routine incident", Dmytro Kuleba said: "As long as Russia controls Crimea, these kinds of incidents will be inevitable and the Black Sea will not be a safe place.

"So the only way to prevent such incidents is actually to kick Russia out of Crimea."

Russia annexed Crimea in 2014, but the vast majority of countries still recognise it as part of Ukraine.

The BBC asked Mr Kuleba if, following the drone incident, the US and other allies might become more cautious.

"If the West wants to demonstrate its weakness, it should certainly demonstrate its cautiousness after an incident like this, but I don't have a feeling that this is the mood in capitals," he replied.

"The mood is not to escalate but nor is the mood to lean under the pressure - the physical or rhetorical pressure - of Russia."

US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin vowed the military would "continue to fly and operate" wherever international law allows.

He told the Ukraine contact group: "It is incumbent upon Russia to operate its aircraft in a safe and professional manner."

The US drone crash is a moment fraught with danger

After being summoned to speak to officials in Washington, Russian ambassador Anatoly Antonov said Moscow saw the drone incident as "a provocation".

From the Kremlin's point of view Mr Antonov added: "The unacceptable activity of the US military in the close proximity to our borders is a cause for concern."

On Wednesday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov reporters there has been no high-level contact between Moscow and Washington over the incident.

But he said Russia would never refuse to engage in constructive dialogue.

Nice CGI that they added at the end. As if the su 27 contracted ONE prop blade going at full RPM. As if a composite prop blade will just curl over at the tip. What a joke. Composite doesn't bend

As if the su 27 could hit the one blade while avoiding the vertical stabilizers.

A Russian military underwater robot reportedly finds downed U.S. drone in the Black Sea

The American MQ-9 reaper drone, which was shot down over the Black Sea, has been found near Sevastopol, at a depth of 850–900 meters (nearly 3,000 feet). Sevastopol publication ForPost reported the news, citing a source close to Russia’s Defense Ministry who is familiar with the details of the operation.

There has been no official confirmation of this information.

According to ForPost, specialists with the Ministry of Defense discovered the wreckage of the drone on March 14, the day it was shot down, on the Black Sea floor about 60 kilometers (about 37 miles) from Sevastopol. The source says that the drone was found by an underwater robot.

A Russian warship is currently on duty at the site of the crash, and the perimeter of the crash zone is under guard.

ForPost’s source reports that recovery of the wreckage at such a depth will require methods similar to those used to recover sunken submarines.

ABC News reported on March 15 that Russian ships had been seen at the site of the crash, and that they had likely picked up some of the wreckage.
