Dunno - maybe it had been hooked, sharks eating the catch as its being pulled in is pretty common. Mind you pulling in a ray (whole) that size wouldn't be easy. A couple of months ago I paddled next to a boat for 45 mins as a ray pulled it across the river and back before the line broke (it was at Blackwall reach where the last shark attack occurred (non-fatal) about 3 years ago).

Fuck em - if ya numbers up, then so be it.
I grew up surfing the WA coast, including teh cold south where the sharks are big and white - in much scarier and spookier waters. (This attack occurred literally in the middle of the city). Never seen a shark face-2-face (besides a few little reef ones) - got out a few times because others have seen them though. (shit myself plenty of times due to seals and dolphins popping up unexpectedly!)

So long as they don't start taking people out in the carpark, then no worries.

This summer spent several lovely days in the fine city of Perth. Even able to score a couple bottles of Blantons Bourbon at Murphy's.

Spent a day in the Swan River Valley Wine tasting, dinning and a lovely hour or two at a local distillery booze tasting.

Unfortunately, this Perth story is just heartbreaking. For the young girl's family this tragedy will sap the vitality of life out them for a long time.

But one thing does not make sense in this story. I've always heard that dolphin's and sharks are mortal enemies. More often the dolphins especially a pod can easily kill a shark. It is frequently said if there are dolphins around there will be no sharks. If this is true, this may lend credence to the boat propeller theory.

But this speculation provides no comfort for the girl's family. Rest in peace innocent one.

The attack took place out the front of where my mum lives - I chuck a line in there occasionally. It is adjoining the main harbour - so it could have been anything - white tiger etc - they are saying bull shark which is also likely but they tend to go further up the river.
We often see pods of dolphins around the bridges.

I was fishing yesteday about 1.5kms away until about 2.30pm - the attack occurred at 3.30pm. Lots of boats and fish schooling on the rising tide.

Currently no-one is 100% confirming a shark attack - there was a suggestion that it could have been a prop - lots of boats go under the bridge.

Anyway - poor girl and her family.

There was also a part ray washed up a couple of days ago - with pretty big bites! The ray was about 1m across.
I'll certainly keep my eyes open a bit more in teh next few days - but as they say about sharks - its the ones you don't see that get you.

So some bloke reporting a bit of gossip he heard down the pub then.

I think the witnesses with her would probably have noticed her being run over by a boat.

Oi - I was repeating a bit of gossip that was on the news services!

Apparently no-one saw the shark...maybe it was a shark in a boat!

(and don't believe that old wives tale that dolphin scare away sharks etc)

Since this is a news thread, please post the link to the news service that posted that.

Meanwhile "news services" that actually report news posted:

Police boats were deployed too, scouring the river looking for the animal, thought to be a bull shark.
A man survived a Bull shark attack in that area just a couple of years ago.

faaaark - are you a cop!
I heard it on the 6pm saturday AWST ABC news - which was just over a couple of hours after the attack - sorry officer I can't say how many minutes!

It is also mentioned by the UK DAily Mail - it was teh very first link found on google when I searched - Swan River shark attack: Hero attempts to rescue girl from fatal Fremantle mauling near Perth | Daily Mail Online - "Amid a string of reports, WA Police initially thought that she may have been injured by a boat propeller."

You can confirm via your contacts at Interpol...

young fella pulled in this one a couple of days ago (11pm at night) about 1km up from where the girl was attacked.
Getting REAL close to where I go paddling and fishing.
I just built a floating basket to put my catch in - tied to the back of the kayak - starting to think that might make me look a bit too much like lunch for the sharkies.

This one was released - which I think is the right thing to do, hopefully it lived. (I think the photos exagerate the size a bit -it was a bit over 2.5m)

Jumping in the water to swim with wild animals. Not exactly the most intelligent thing to do.

I also learned today that bull sharks aren't beta cucks. Quite a revelation that is.

In that case nobody would ever enter the waters surrounding Australia, or any of the rivers either, because there's wildlife that can and will kill you in all of them. That's assuming a venomous snake doesn't kill you before you even get in the water, but as they can all swim well they can still get you while you're in it.

But, the chances of any of this happening are so remote that people don't even think about it unless we're talking about the likes of divers or surfers in cold Southern waters with Seals frolicking which is exactly the sort of location big Great Whites are most commonly found.

I reckon its a bronze whaler - people used to reckonthere is a sub-species, a Swan River Whaler.

I'd never heard the term 'bull shark' used for any shark in West Aus until about a decade ago. Probably they are all the same sub-species etc but the bronze whaler isn't considered aggressiive - the bull shark is.
